Chapter 7 - The Man Who Came for Sophie

Gabriel came during a storm.

Of course he did.

Years later, Dante would remember thinking there was something almost theatrical about it.

Rain hammered the mansion windows.

Thunder rolled over the grounds.

Sophie slept upstairs.

Elena sat in the library.

Dante had doubled security.

Still, Gabriel got inside.

Not through the gates.

Through a tunnel built during Prohibition.

A tunnel even Dante hadn't known existed.

Bruno knew.

At 1:13 a.m., the dog began growling.

Dante woke instantly.

Bruno stood facing the bedroom door.

“What?”

The dog ran.

Dante followed.

Downstairs, a light was on.

Elena screamed.

Dante ran toward the sound.

Gabriel had her against the wall.

A gun pressed beneath her chin.

“Where's Sophie?”

Dante stopped.

Gabriel smiled.

“There he is.”

“Let her go.”

“You took everything.”

“You destroyed it yourself.”

“I want my daughter.”

“She doesn't want you.”

Gabriel's face twisted.

“She is three.”

“And already knows enough to be afraid of you.”

Gabriel shoved Elena aside.

The gun swung toward Dante.

Then a tiny voice came from the stairs.

“Daddy?”

Everyone froze.

Sophie stood halfway down.

Stuffed rabbit in one hand.

Her face pale.

Gabriel stared.

“Sophie.”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

His expression cracked.

“Come here.”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

“I said come here.”

Bruno moved between them.

Gabriel raised the gun.

Sophie screamed.

“DON'T HURT BRUNO!”

Dante moved.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Dante hit Gabriel.

Both men crashed to the floor.

Elena grabbed Sophie.

Bruno barked furiously.

Gabriel reached for the weapon.

Dante reached first.

For a moment, the muzzle pointed at Gabriel's chest.

Everything stopped.

Dante could end it.

One movement.

One shot.

No more running.

No more fear.

Then he heard Sophie.

“Dante?”

Not Mister Dante.

Dante.

He looked at her.

She was watching him.

And Dante understood that whatever he did next would become part of the way this child understood the world.

He lowered the gun.

Tommy and two guards rushed in.

They restrained Gabriel.

Police arrived minutes later.

This time Gabriel didn't escape.

Elena gave a full statement.

The ledger connected Gabriel to multiple crimes.

His attack on the estate added more charges.

And the evidence connected to Salerno ensured that powerful people could no longer quietly make the problem disappear.

When the cars finally left, dawn was breaking.

Dante stood on the mansion steps.

Rain had stopped.

Sophie came outside.

Bruno followed.

She walked up to Dante.

“Is Daddy gone?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

Dante hesitated.

“He can't hurt you.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Sophie nodded.

Then hugged him.

Dante froze.

Tiny arms wrapped around his legs.

He had faced armed men without blinking.

This terrified him.

Slowly, awkwardly, he placed one hand on her back.

Elena stood in the doorway.

Their eyes met.

Something passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something quieter.

Trust.

Sophie released him.

“I have a question.”

Dante sighed.

“Of course you do.”

“Can I keep Bruno now?”

Dante looked down at the dog.

“No.”

Sophie gasped.

“But—”

“He lives here.”

Her lip trembled.

“So?”

Dante crouched.

“So maybe you should too.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Sophie stared at him.

“Me?”

“You and your mother.”

“For how long?”

Dante looked at Elena.

Then at Sophie.

The answer frightened him.

Which was exactly why he said it.

“As long as you want.”

Sophie narrowed her eyes.

“That's not forever.”

Dante smiled.

“No.”

She waited.

He looked toward the sunrise beyond the gates.

“Not yet.”

Because before Dante could promise forever, there was one last truth he needed to uncover.

His father's final words had haunted him for eleven years.

But the ledger suggested Vincenzo had spent his final months doing the exact opposite of what he had told his son.

He had risked everything for strangers.

Why?

The answer waited in a sealed letter discovered inside Vincenzo's old safe.

A letter addressed simply:

May you like

To Dante, when you finally understand.
