Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Locked Door

Three days after the twins were born, Evelyn was discharged.

Grace and Lily remained under observation for another forty-eight hours.

Evelyn refused to return to the house she had shared with Daniel.

Instead, temporary military housing was arranged while her attorney handled the separation.

Daniel sent twelve messages.

She answered none.

Margaret sent seven.

Evelyn answered one.

The babies are stable. Further communication regarding visitation should go through counsel until the current investigation is clarified.

Margaret responded immediately.

Investigation? Daniel says you're trying to destroy him because he left you.

Evelyn stared at the message.

Then turned off her phone.

That afternoon Mercer visited.

"Ready?"

"No."

"Good answer."

He sat across from her.

"We recovered communications."

Evelyn waited.

"Daniel and Vanessa discussed your study."

Her jaw tightened.

"How long?"

"At least four months."

Mercer explained carefully.

Daniel had become aware that Evelyn occasionally brought secured materials home in an approved locked case.

He apparently did not know the specifics.

But he suspected her work involved defense procurement.

Vanessa's role at his company gave that information value.

"They thought I could influence the contract?"

"Initially."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I was recused from decisions involving Daniel's company."

"We know."

"Daniel knew that."

"Apparently he didn't believe you."

Of course.

Daniel had spent years assuming Evelyn was less important than she was.

The moment he suspected she possessed influence, he had assumed she was lying about not using it for him.

Mercer continued.

"There's evidence Vanessa encouraged him to find out what you knew."

"And the photograph?"

"Taken after someone forced your study door."

"Daniel?"

"Evidence suggests he was present."

Evelyn looked away.

That hurt more than expected.

The study had been hers.

Not merely a workspace.

A boundary.

One of the few places in their house Daniel knew was absolutely private.

And he had violated it.

"Was classified information compromised?"

"Nothing we've identified so far."

Evelyn exhaled.

"But procurement-sensitive material may have been photographed."

"Enough to affect bidding?"

"Potentially."

She understood immediately.

"And the financial transfers?"

Mercer leaned forward.

"That's where this gets complicated."

Investigators had discovered irregular payments involving a senior manager at Daniel's company.

Some funds had been routed through personal accounts.

Others disguised as consulting expenses.

The money taken from Evelyn's deployment account appeared to have been used to solve Vanessa's family crisis while concealing where the funds actually originated.

"Why use my money?" Evelyn asked.

"Possibly because Daniel needed immediate funds that couldn't be traced to company accounts."

"So he stole from me."

"Yes."

"To impress his mistress."

Mercer did not answer.

He didn't need to.

Two days later Evelyn brought her daughters home.

Not to Daniel's house.

To hers.

A temporary townhouse had been prepared.

Two bassinets stood beside her bed.

Boxes of diapers filled a corner.

Mercer's wife had sent enough baby clothes for triplets.

For the first time, Evelyn laughed.

Then she cried.

Not because she wanted Daniel back.

She didn't.

She cried for the marriage she had thought existed.

There was a difference.

A week later Daniel appeared at the townhouse.

Evelyn saw him through the security camera.

She did not open the door.

He rang again.

"Evelyn!"

She activated the intercom.

"You need to leave."

"I want to see my daughters."

"Contact the attorney."

"They're my children!"

"And nobody has said otherwise."

"Then open the door."

"No."

He stared into the camera.

"You can't do this."

Evelyn almost laughed at the irony.

"I didn't do this, Daniel."

"You called federal investigators on me!"

"You forged my financial authorization."

"I told you why!"

"You entered my secured study."

Silence.

There.

Again.

The silence that revealed more than words.

"I don't know what they told you."

"They showed me evidence."

Daniel stepped closer to the camera.

"Vanessa manipulated everything."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Of course.

Now Vanessa was the villain.

"Go home, Daniel."

"I don't have one!"

That surprised her.

He continued.

"The company suspended me. My accounts are frozen. Vanessa won't answer me."

Evelyn felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

"What do you want from me?"

"I want you to fix this."

There it was.

Not forgiveness.

Not reconciliation.

Not concern for the twins.

Fix this.

"You think because I'm a colonel I can stop a federal investigation?"

"I think you started it."

"No."

Her voice hardened.

"You started it when you forged my authorization."

"Evelyn—"

"You continued it when you broke into my study."

"I didn't break in."

"You were there."

He stared at the camera.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Daniel looked behind him.

For the first time, his anger disappeared.

"I thought you had information that could save the contract."

"Save it from what?"

His face changed.

Evelyn's pulse quickened.

"Daniel."

He shook his head.

"I can't talk here."

"You can talk to investigators."

"They'll destroy me."

"If you've committed no crime, tell them the truth."

"It's not that simple."

"It usually isn't."

Daniel looked toward the street again.

Then said something unexpected.

"Vanessa's father wasn't really losing the house."

Evelyn went still.

"What?"

"The foreclosure story wasn't true."

The applause at the Hawthorne Club flashed through her mind.

Vanessa accepting praise.

Daniel raising his glass.

Vanessa understands loyalty.

"What was the money for?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

"You stole tens of thousands of dollars without knowing why?"

"Vanessa said her father had debts."

"What kind?"

"I don't know."

"Daniel."

He rubbed both hands over his face.

Then looked into the camera.

"She said if I didn't help, people would start asking questions about the contract."

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

"What people?"

"I don't know."

"Names."

"I don't have them."

She studied him.

He looked genuinely frightened.

That did not make him innocent.

But it meant the situation was larger than she understood.

"Leave," Evelyn said.

"Evelyn—"

"Contact your attorney and tell investigators exactly what you just told me."

"You don't understand what these people can do."

"Then give investigators the chance to understand."

Daniel stared into the camera for several seconds.

Then walked away.

Evelyn immediately called Mercer.

Within hours, investigators interviewed Daniel again.

This time he talked.

Not completely.

But enough.

Vanessa's father, Richard Cole, had accumulated serious financial obligations connected to a consulting business that existed mostly on paper.

Payments flowed through it.

Some originated from subcontractors connected to Daniel's defense project.

Investigators suspected kickbacks.

Daniel insisted he had not understood the full scheme.

He claimed Vanessa told him they needed temporary funds to prevent damaging information from surfacing.

He had taken Evelyn's money.

He had forged her authorization.

And he had helped access Evelyn's study.

Those facts remained.

But now the reason behind them looked different.

The following morning, Margaret arrived.

This time Evelyn opened the door.

Not because she wanted to.

Because Margaret was crying.

The older woman looked smaller than Evelyn remembered.

"May I see them?"

Evelyn hesitated.

Then stepped aside.

Margaret entered quietly.

Grace and Lily slept in their bassinets.

Margaret approached them.

Her hand covered her mouth.

"They're beautiful."

"Yes."

"I didn't know Daniel hadn't visited."

Evelyn said nothing.

Margaret turned.

"He told me you wouldn't allow him."

"He came once with Vanessa."

Margaret's face changed.

"To the hospital?"

"Yes."

"Oh."

That single word contained shame.

Margaret sat.

"I owe you an apology."

Evelyn waited.

"I was cruel."

"Yes."

Margaret flinched.

Evelyn wasn't interested in making forgiveness easy.

"I thought you looked down on us," Margaret said.

"Why?"

"You never talked about your work."

"I couldn't talk about much of it."

"Daniel said you were embarrassed because your job wasn't important."

Evelyn almost smiled.

"Daniel said many things."

Margaret looked toward the babies.

"I called you expensive."

"I remember."

"I didn't know."

"Would my rank have made the insult wrong?"

Margaret looked at her.

Evelyn continued.

"If I had actually been unemployed, would humiliating me while pregnant have been acceptable?"

"No."

"Then my rank doesn't matter."

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"No. It doesn't."

For the first time, Evelyn believed she understood.

Before Margaret left, she paused at the door.

"There's something you should know."

"What?"

"Daniel called me last night."

Evelyn waited.

"He said Vanessa disappeared."

"Disappeared?"

"He went to her apartment. Empty."

Evelyn's expression sharpened.

"Did he tell investigators?"

"I don't know."

Evelyn reached for her secure phone.

Mercer answered.

Before she could speak, he said:

"We know."

"Where is she?"

"We're looking."

"Do you think she ran?"

"We think she knew the investigation was moving faster than expected."

"Why?"

Mercer paused.

"Because investigators searched her office this morning."

"And?"

"They found a second phone."

Evelyn's grip tightened.

"What's on it?"

"We're still processing it."

Then Mercer added:

"But one recovered message mentions you by name."

Evelyn looked toward her sleeping daughters.

"What does it say?"

Mercer's answer erased the last trace of calm from her face.

"If Shaw discovers the account, use Daniel."

Evelyn had thought she was merely the betrayed wife standing three tables away.

Now she understood something far more chilling.

May you like

Someone had been watching Colonel Evelyn Shaw long before that banquet ever began.
