Chapter 6 - The Man My Father Trusted Most

Thomas Grant had worked for my family for twenty-two years.

He knew every company.

Every trust.

Every vulnerability.

And every secret.

By the time we realized he was gone, he had a forty-minute head start.

Dad stood in the conference room staring at the empty chair where Thomas had been sitting.

“I trusted him.”

There was no anger in his voice.

Not yet.

Only disbelief.

I understood.

Betrayal arrives strangely.

First, your mind searches for reasons the obvious cannot be true.

I had done the same thing with Adrian.

Dad did it with Thomas.

Mom’s recording gave us suspicion, not proof.

So we followed evidence.

Investigators reopened the original crash records.

Financial analysts traced Hart Technologies transactions.

Cyber teams examined the recent Ellison Capital breach.

By evening, the picture was horrifyingly clear.

Thomas had represented one of Hart Technologies’ earliest investors before joining my father.

When Mom discovered money being diverted through licensing agreements, she initially suspected Elaine Vale.

But later she found another signature.

Thomas’s.

Elaine had broken rules.

Thomas had exploited them.

When the company was sold, Mom intended to expose him.

Then she died.

He joined Dad less than a year later.

“Why would you hire him?” I asked.

Dad looked sick.

“Because he helped me pursue the investigation.”

Of course he had.

The best place to hide was inside the search party.

Thomas spent seventeen years controlling what Dad discovered.

Then Vanessa reopened everything.

Not because she knew Thomas was responsible.

Because she believed my mother had destroyed Elaine.

Her revenge accidentally uncovered the man who had harmed both families.

At 9:20 p.m., Adrian called.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Thomas contacted me.”

I stood.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“What did he want?”

“The Helix authorization codes.”

“Do you have them?”

“Yes.”

“Don't give him anything.”

“I didn't.”

I heard traffic behind Adrian.

“Where are you?”

“Going to Mercer.”

“No.”

“Claire, he said he has evidence that can clear me.”

“He's lying.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you going?”

“Because I told him I would.”

I understood.

“You're setting a trap.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Adrian, don't.”

“I owe you.”

“You don't repay me by doing something reckless.”

“I’m not trying to repay you.”

His voice softened.

“I’m trying to do one decent thing after doing something unforgivable.”

That sentence silenced me.

I called investigators.

Mercer Dynamics was surrounded quietly within twenty minutes.

Thomas arrived at 10:03.

He entered through the underground garage.

Adrian waited in his office.

I watched from a surveillance vehicle with Dad.

Thomas walked in carrying the missing trust file.

Adrian stood.

“You have the evidence?”

Thomas placed the folder down.

“You have the codes?”

“Yes.”

“Give them to me.”

“First tell me why.”

Thomas smiled.

“Why what?”

“Why Vanessa?”

“She became inconvenient.”

“You knew what she was doing?”

“I knew enough.”

“Did you forge Claire’s emails?”

“No.”

“Did you let Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

My father shut his eyes.

Thomas continued.

“Vanessa thought she was avenging her mother. I simply made sure her path led where I needed it to.”

“Claire?”

“Not Claire.”

“The trust.”

Thomas wanted control of the original Hart technology too.

Helix had transformed Mom’s early architecture into infrastructure worth billions.

Whoever controlled the legacy rights could influence the acquisition.

Maybe much more.

Adrian leaned against his desk.

“And Eleanor?”

Thomas’s face changed.

“Ancient history.”

“Did you kill her?”

Dad gripped the edge of the monitor.

Thomas stared at Adrian.

“No.”

I almost exhaled.

Then he added:

“But I knew her car had been compromised.”

My father made a broken sound beside me.

Adrian remained remarkably calm.

“And you let her drive?”

“I warned her to stop digging.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“She made her choice.”

Dad stood.

Agents moved.

The office doors opened seconds later.

Thomas looked toward them.

For the first time, he realized Adrian had never intended to help him.

He turned toward the security camera.

Almost as though he knew Dad and I were watching.

Then he smiled.

“Richard will never recover the missing account.”

Dad froze.

“What account?” I asked.

He didn't answer.

Thomas was arrested.

But once again, the story wasn't finished.

The missing account contained money diverted from Hart Technologies decades earlier.

Not millions.

Hundreds of millions after years of investment growth.

And the legal beneficiary listed on the dormant account was neither Thomas nor Vanessa.

It was me.

Mom had discovered the diverted assets before her death and arranged for them to return to the Hart Legacy Trust if Thomas ever attempted to access them again.

He had triggered that clause.

By trying to steal my inheritance, Thomas had activated my mother’s final safeguard.

Two days later, the assets were frozen pending court proceedings.

Vanessa agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Not because she suddenly liked me.

Because she finally heard Mom’s recording.

The full recording.

There was more after file seventeen.

My mother had spoken about Elaine.

“She made terrible choices,” Mom said. “But she isn't my enemy. Tell her I wish we'd found another way.”

Vanessa listened twice.

Then she cried.

According to the investigator, she said nothing for nearly an hour.

Her entire life had been built around inherited hatred.

One recording didn't erase her crimes.

But it destroyed the story she had used to justify them.

Adrian resigned as CEO of Mercer Dynamics.

The board accepted immediately.

His criminal case connected to what happened in our home remained separate from the corporate investigation.

He did not ask me to intervene.

He did not ask Dad.

For once, Adrian accepted consequences without searching for a door around them.

A week later, divorce papers arrived.

He had already signed.

Attached was a handwritten letter.

Claire,

There is no version of what happened where I get to ask you to forgive me. Vanessa lied to me, but she did not make my choices. I made them.

I stopped reading for several minutes.

Then continued.

I spent three years thinking your quietness meant you needed me. Now I understand it meant you trusted me enough not to compete with me. I turned that trust into something ugly.

I am sorry.

Not because your father is Richard Ellison.

Not because I lost my company.

Because you were my wife, and I failed the most basic responsibility one human being owes another: to make the person beside them safe.

I hope one day you have a life so good that remembering me becomes unnecessary.

Adrian.

I folded the letter.

Then I signed the divorce papers.

Dad watched from across the kitchen.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He nodded.

It was exactly the answer I needed to be allowed to give.

Then he placed an envelope beside me.

“What’s this?”

“Your mother’s final trust instructions.”

I looked at him.

“I thought we already found them.”

“Not these.”

The envelope had remained sealed for seventeen years.

It could only be opened after the Hart Legacy Trust recovered its diverted assets.

Thomas had unknowingly fulfilled the condition.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter from Mom.

The first line made me cry.

My darling Claire, if this money ever reaches you, don't use it to prove how powerful you are. Use it to become impossible to control.

I read the rest twice.

Then I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

But doing it would mean stepping publicly into the identity I had hidden for years.

Claire Hart was safe.

Claire Ellison was powerful.

For the first time, I wondered whether I could be both.

May you like

And the decision I made the next morning would surprise even my father.
