Chapter 4 - The Wedding Money He Tried to Hide

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was waiting for Ethan to call.

Not because I was hoping he would show up at my hotel door and give me some perfect explanation that would magically fix everything.

That version of me was gone.

The woman who spent five years believing every apology.

The woman who accepted every excuse.

The woman who convinced herself that love meant patience even when patience became suffering.

She was gone.

Instead, I sat beside the hotel window watching Boston wake up.

The city lights slowly disappeared as the morning sun reflected against the glass buildings across the river.

My hand rested over my stomach.

The baby moved slightly.

A tiny reminder that even though Ethan had broken my heart…

my life was not over.

My life was changing.

And maybe, for the first time, it was changing in a way that belonged to me.

At 7:12 a.m., my phone rang.

Melissa.

Our wedding coordinator.

I stared at her name for a few seconds before answering.

“Hello?”

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Claire, I’m sorry to call so early.”

“It’s okay.”

A pause.

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Did Ethan ever tell you exactly how the wedding was being paid for?”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What do you mean?”

Another pause.

“The deposits.”

“What about them?”

Melissa took a breath.

“Claire, the payment information on file doesn’t match what you told me.”

A strange feeling settled in my chest.

“What did Ethan tell you?”

“That he was handling everything.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Because that was exactly what he wanted everyone to believe.

Ethan loved being seen as the provider.

The man with the plan.

The person who had everything under control.

But Melissa’s next words made my entire body go cold.

“Claire, the payments were not coming from Ethan’s account.”

Silence.

“What?”

“They were coming from a company account.”

I sat up straight.

“What company account?”

Melissa lowered her voice.

“The same consulting company you both work for.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

No.

That didn’t make sense.

Ethan would never do something like that.

Except…

Maybe I had spent years believing I knew a man I never truly knew.

“Are you sure?”

“I checked three times.”

Melissa sounded uncomfortable.

“There are transfers listed as business expenses.”

My mind started racing.

The venue.

The flowers.

The catering.

The luxury arrangements Ethan had proudly told everyone he organized.

All of it.

Paid for with company money?

“How much?”

Melissa hesitated.

“Claire…”

“How much?”

“Almost two hundred thousand dollars.”

The room became silent.

I stared at the floor.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

Money that wasn’t his.

Money he had no right to use.

Money he had likely taken while telling everyone he was building our future.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I just sat there.

Trying to understand.

Because betrayal has layers.

The train hurt because it showed me where I stood in his priorities.

The business meeting hurt because it showed me he had been taking credit for my work.

But this…

This was different.

This wasn’t selfishness.

This wasn’t immaturity.

This was deception.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Ethan.

I watched the screen light up.

Then stop.

Then light up again.

Finally, I answered.

“What?”

There was a long silence.

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Tired.

“Claire.”

I waited.

“Can we talk?”

“No.”

He exhaled.

“Please.”

I looked out the window.

“You had five years to talk to me.”

“Claire, you don’t understand what happened.”

I almost laughed.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

His voice became more urgent.

“The company account thing isn’t what you think.”

There it was.

The defense.

The explanation.

The attempt to make reality smaller.

“What is it then?”

“It was temporary.”

I froze.

“Temporary?”

“Yes.”

“I want you to explain something to me.”

“Claire—”

“No.”

My voice surprised even me.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Explain why our wedding was paid for with company money.”

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

“Ethan?”

Finally, he spoke.

“I was going to replace it.”

“When?”

“After the promotion.”

I closed my eyes.

The promotion.

Everything always came back to that.

His image.

His career.

His success.

“And if you didn’t get promoted?”

He didn’t answer.

I whispered:

“That’s what I thought.”

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

I stood up.

“I listened to you for five years.”

“Claire, I love you.”

I stopped.

Because once again, those words.

The same words.

The same weapon.

“I don’t know if you love me, Ethan.”

My voice became quiet.

“I think you love the person who makes your life easier.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No?”

I looked at the ring sitting inside my bag.

“The woman you love would have gotten the window seat.”

Silence.

“The woman you love would have been told the truth.”

Silence.

“The woman you love would not have discovered your secrets from strangers.”

His breathing became heavier.

“Claire…”

I ended the call.

---

Later that morning, I returned to the office.

Not because I wanted to see Ethan.

Because I needed answers.

I went straight to the finance department.

The moment I walked in, everyone became quiet.

News traveled fast in corporate offices.

Especially when someone powerful started falling.

A woman from accounting named Laura approached me.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

She looked nervous.

“I think you need to see something.”

She opened a file on her computer.

“I wasn’t supposed to access this, but after the HR investigation started…”

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?”

She turned the screen toward me.

There were dozens of transactions.

Transfers.

Approvals.

Documents.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Ethan Parker.

But there was something else.

A second name.

Maya Reynolds.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Laura swallowed.

“We found communication between them.”

My heart sank.

“About what?”

She clicked another file.

A message appeared.

From Ethan.

To Maya.

Once Claire signs the final wedding documents, everything will be easier.

My blood went cold.

Another message.

She trusts me too much to question anything.

I stopped breathing.

Another.

After the promotion, I’ll handle the rest.

I stared at the screen.

The room around me disappeared.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The train.

The seat.

The blazer.

The wedding.

The business deal.

None of it was random.

It was all part of something bigger.

A plan.

A plan where Ethan believed I was too loyal to leave.

Too in love to fight.

Too trusting to notice.

Laura looked at me carefully.

“Claire…”

I closed the file.

My hands were shaking.

But my voice was steady.

“I need a copy.”

She hesitated.

“Claire, this could become a legal matter.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I wasn’t thinking about saving my relationship.

I was thinking about protecting myself.

---

That evening, Ethan came to my hotel.

I knew it was him before opening the door.

Because I saw his reflection in the hallway mirror.

He looked different.

Not like the successful executive everyone admired.

Not like the man who walked into rooms expecting respect.

He looked scared.

When I opened the door, he immediately started talking.

“Claire, please let me explain.”

I didn’t move.

“Explain what?”

His eyes searched mine.

“The messages.”

My heart stopped.

So he knew.

“You know I saw them?”

He looked away.

That was enough.

“Ethan…”

My voice became quiet.

“How long?”

He didn’t answer.

“How long have you been planning a life where I was just a piece on your board?”

His face changed.

“Claire, it wasn’t like that.”

“Then tell me what it was like.”

He stepped closer.

“I made mistakes.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Mistakes happen once.”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“This was a choice.”

He had no answer.

And then…

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?”

I watched his face lose color.

“What do you mean she filed a complaint?”

My heart started racing.

She.

Who?

Ethan looked at me.

Then at the phone.

And whispered:

“Maya.”

The woman who had been sitting in my seat.

The woman who had worn his jacket.

The woman who knew his secrets.

Had just turned against him.

May you like

And whatever she had told the company…

was enough to bring Ethan to his knees.
