Chapter 1 - The Night The Mountain Took Them

The last thing Officer Emily Carter remembered before everything went dark was the sound of Koda barking.

Not the gunshots she had heard during training.

Not the screaming tires during high-speed pursuits.

Not the endless radio chatter that filled every patrol shift.

Just one sound.

Her partner calling out from the back of the patrol SUV.

A warning.

A promise.

A desperate attempt to protect her.

The storm had arrived faster than anyone expected.

The mountain roads outside Blackwood County were dangerous even on clear nights, but that evening the world had disappeared beneath a wall of snow and ice. The wind screamed through the trees, visibility dropped to almost nothing, and every turn became a gamble.

Emily had been driving slower than normal.

She knew better than to challenge the mountain.

After twelve years as a police officer, she had learned that confidence could save lives, but arrogance could end them.

Especially in weather like this.

Her hand tightened around the steering wheel as another wave of snow slammed against the windshield.

“Koda, stay calm,” she said softly.

From the rear compartment, a familiar bark answered.

Emily smiled despite the exhaustion on her face.

“You always think you’re in charge, don’t you?”

Koda was not just a police dog.

He was her partner.

Her shadow.

Her family.

For three years, they had worked together through situations that most people would never understand.

They had searched abandoned buildings where armed criminals were hiding.

They had tracked missing children through forests.

They had stood together during moments when fear could not be shown.

Koda had never failed her.

And Emily had never failed him.

That was why she trusted him more than anyone.

The German Shepherd could sense things before humans could.

A change in the wind.

A hidden threat.

A person lying.

And sometimes...

Pain.

Emily had noticed him acting differently during the drive.

He had been restless.

Pacing.

Whining quietly.

She thought it was because of the storm.

She was wrong.

“Koda, what is it?” she asked.

The dog barked again.

This time louder.

Emily glanced briefly at the rear camera.

His ears were standing straight.

His body was tense.

He was not afraid.

He was warning her.

But before she could slow down, the front tires hit a patch of black ice hidden beneath the snow.

The world changed instantly.

The steering wheel became useless in her hands.

The SUV slid sideways.

Emily’s heart dropped.

“No…”

The headlights pointed toward the edge of the mountain road.

The guardrail appeared.

Too quickly.

She turned the wheel.

Pressed the brakes.

Nothing worked.

The tires lost all connection with the frozen ground.

The patrol SUV slammed into the barrier.

For one impossible second, everything stopped.

The vehicle balanced over empty space.

Emily heard Koda barking behind her.

A single desperate sound.

Then gravity won.

The SUV dropped.

The crash was not like anything she had imagined.

It was not one dramatic explosion.

It was a series of violent moments.

Metal twisting.

Glass breaking.

The vehicle rolling through darkness.

Emily’s body was thrown against the seat.

The airbag exploded into her chest.

Something struck her shoulder.

Something crushed her leg.

The world became pain.

Noise.

Darkness.

Then silence.

---

When Emily opened her eyes, she did not know where she was.

For several seconds, she thought she was dreaming.

Snow was falling inside the vehicle.

That was the first thing she noticed.

Snow.

Inside.

Then she saw the shattered windshield.

The broken dashboard.

The twisted metal around her.

Reality returned all at once.

The accident.

The ravine.

The storm.

“Koda…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

No answer.

Fear rushed through her faster than pain.

“Koda!”

A weak sound came from behind her.

A whine.

Emily closed her eyes.

Relief almost overwhelmed her.

He was alive.

She tried moving her body.

A sharp pain exploded through her leg.

She stopped immediately.

The dashboard had collapsed inward, trapping her.

Her left arm shook as she reached for the radio.

The device hung from its cable.

Broken.

She pressed the button anyway.

“Dispatch…”

Static.

Nothing.

“Dispatch, this is Officer Carter…”

Only silence.

The storm outside swallowed her voice.

She looked around the wreckage.

Her phone was gone.

The emergency locator was dark.

No signal.

No way out.

For the first time in years, Emily Carter felt something she hated.

Helplessness.

Then she heard metal moving behind her.

A scratching sound.

A desperate struggle.

“Koda, no…”

The dog was forcing his way forward.

The partition between the back compartment and the front cabin had been damaged during the crash. A gap had opened, but it was far too small for a dog his size.

Emily watched as Koda pushed against the broken metal.

Again.

And again.

His fur was covered in snow.

One side of his muzzle was bleeding.

But he refused to stop.

“Koda, stay back.”

He ignored her.

For the first time in three years, he ignored a direct command.

Emily would normally have corrected him.

But tonight was different.

Tonight she understood something.

Koda was not disobeying.

He was making a decision.

Finally, with a painful twist of his body, he forced himself through the opening.

He fell into the front seat area.

Emily stared at him.

The dog immediately crawled toward her.

His nose touched her face.

Checking.

Searching.

Making sure she was alive.

A broken sound escaped Emily’s throat.

“You’re hurt too…”

Koda looked at her.

Those familiar eyes.

Those loyal eyes.

The same eyes that had followed her through every dangerous situation.

Emily lifted her hand slowly and touched his fur.

“You crazy dog…”

Koda leaned closer.

Outside, the storm grew stronger.

Inside the destroyed SUV, two partners were trapped together at the bottom of a frozen ravine.

Emily knew rescue could take hours.

Maybe longer.

And deep inside, she understood something terrifying.

The temperature was dropping.

The vehicle was becoming a frozen box.

If help did not come soon…

Neither of them might survive the night.

But Koda had already made his choice.

May you like

He was not leaving.

Even if it cost him his life.
