Chapter 6 - The Last Lie

Dominic reached Mara’s room just as Dr. Helen Mercer stepped inside.

“Stop.”

The doctor turned.

Mara looked from her to Dominic.

“What’s wrong?”

Dominic entered and closed the door behind him.

“Dr. Mercer, step away from my wife.”

The doctor’s expression remained professional.

“Mr. Vascari, Mara just underwent an emergency delivery.”

“I know.”

“She needs medical supervision.”

“She has it.”

Mara pushed herself higher against the pillows.

“Dominic?”

He handed her Mateo’s photograph.

She read the ledger.

Her face changed.

Dr. Mercer looked toward the door.

Dominic noticed.

“Don't.”

“I have no idea what you think that proves.”

Mara stared at her.

“You told me my records had been accidentally accessed.”

“They had.”

“You changed my appointment three times.”

“For security.”

“You knew where I lived.”

“I was your physician.”

Dominic spoke quietly.

“You were paid by Evan Rusk.”

Dr. Mercer said nothing.

That silence answered enough.

Mara’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

The doctor looked at her.

“You weren't supposed to be harmed.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

Everyone involved seemed to have the same defense.

Celeste.

Salvatore.

Now Mercer.

Nobody intended harm.

They simply lied, watched, manipulated, followed, and frightened her until harm became inevitable.

“I was told your husband represented a danger to you,” Mercer said.

Dominic almost responded.

Mara beat him to it.

“So you sold my medical information?”

Mercer lowered her eyes.

“I made a mistake.”

“No,” Mara said. “You made it every month.”

Hospital security arrived moments later.

Dominic stepped aside.

He did not threaten Mercer.

He did not need to.

There were police now.

Attorneys.

Records.

Evidence.

For the first time, Dominic understood there were forms of power stronger than fear because they did not disappear when the strongest man left the room.

After Mercer was escorted away, Mara looked exhausted.

Dominic sat beside her.

“I'm sorry.”

“You didn't hire her.”

“No. But everything around me made this possible.”

Mara studied him.

“That isn't the same thing.”

“It’s close enough.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“If we're ever going to fix anything, Dominic, you have to stop believing you're responsible for everything.”

He almost smiled.

“That's a strange complaint coming from you.”

“I'm serious.”

“So am I.”

She reached for his hand.

It was the first time she had touched him without fear since he entered the hospital.

“Celeste manipulated me,” Mara said. “Salvatore helped her. Evan turned it into something worse. Mercer betrayed me. Those choices belong to them.”

Dominic looked at their hands.

“And my choices?”

“Those belong to you.”

He nodded.

“I made you lonely in our marriage.”

Mara’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“I thought protecting you meant keeping you outside every dangerous part of my life.”

“It meant keeping me outside your life.”

“I know that now.”

“And if I come back—”

Dominic looked up.

She stopped.

Neither breathed.

“If?” he whispered.

Mara glanced toward the NICU.

“I didn't say I would.”

“I heard the important word.”

“Dominic.”

“I’m listening.”

“If there is ever an us again, there are no locked doors.”

“Okay.”

“No disappearing at midnight.”

“Okay.”

“No telling me ignorance keeps me safe.”

“Okay.”

“No Celeste.”

That almost made him laugh.

“I think that one has been handled.”

Mara smiled.

Then became serious.

“And the organization?”

Dominic had expected it.

He looked through the window.

For years, the Vascari name had been both inheritance and prison.

He thought of his father.

Salvatore.

Evan.

Then Luca.

“I’m done.”

Mara stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the legitimate companies stay. Everything else ends.”

“You can't just walk away.”

“Watch me.”

“It could be dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“Then don't pretend it won't be.”

Dominic nodded.

“We do it legally. Carefully. Transparently. With attorneys, investigators, whoever we need.”

Mara studied his face.

“You mean that.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dominic looked toward the NICU again.

“Because my son will never grow up believing fear is an inheritance.”

Three days later, Luca opened his eyes while Dominic was beside the incubator.

Mara arrived in a wheelchair.

Dominic immediately stood.

“You shouldn't be walking this far.”

“I’m not walking.”

“You know what I mean.”

The nurse positioned Mara beside the incubator.

For the first time, she was allowed to hold Luca against her chest.

Dominic watched.

Mara cried silently.

Luca settled beneath her chin.

“Hi, baby,” she whispered.

Dominic looked away, overwhelmed.

Mara noticed.

“Come here.”

He approached.

“Closer.”

He knelt beside her.

She took his hand and placed it gently against Luca’s back.

Their son breathed beneath his palm.

Tiny.

Steady.

Real.

For several minutes, nothing else existed.

Then Mateo appeared beyond the glass.

Dominic stepped outside.

“What?”

“Celeste wants to talk.”

“No.”

“She says she has one thing Mara needs to know.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“What?”

“She won't tell me.”

Mara had overheard.

“Let her.”

Dominic turned.

“Mara.”

“I want this finished.”

Twenty minutes later, Celeste sat in a monitored consultation room with an attorney and two detectives nearby.

Without the red dress, makeup, and confidence, she seemed smaller.

Mara entered with Dominic.

Celeste looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Mara said nothing.

“I know that doesn't matter.”

“It doesn't.”

Celeste swallowed.

“But there's something you deserve.”

She placed a small digital recorder on the table.

Dominic frowned.

“What is that?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“Salvatore.”

Celeste pressed play.

Salvatore’s voice filled the room.

Then Evan’s.

They were discussing Mara.

Her pregnancy.

Dominic.

And the plan to convince her to leave.

Then Evan said something none of them expected.

Once the baby is born, Dominic will come looking.

Salvatore answered.

Then make sure he finds out the truth.

Evan laughed.

Why would I do that?

A long silence followed.

Then Salvatore said:

Because the point was to separate them until Dominic was out of danger. Not destroy them.

Dominic stared at the recorder.

Celeste stopped it.

“Salvatore never ordered the crash.”

“We know,” Dominic said.

“No. You don't understand.”

She looked at Mara.

“He planned to tell Dominic everything after the baby was born.”

Mara’s expression hardened.

“That doesn't excuse him.”

“I know.”

“Then why tell us?”

Celeste looked at Dominic.

“Because Evan discovered the plan. That's why he tried to kill the truth before Salvatore could confess.”

Dominic stared at her.

One question remained.

“Why did Salvatore suddenly decide to confess?”

Celeste’s answer silenced the room.

“Because someone convinced him.”

“Who?”

Celeste looked toward Mara.

“Your father.”

Mara went pale.

“My father has been dead for nine years.”

Celeste shook her head.

“No, Mara.”

She slid a photograph across the table.

“The man who contacted Salvatore six weeks ago said he was your father.”

Mara stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

But the man in the picture wore the same watch Mara remembered from childhood.

May you like

And he was standing outside the hospital.
