Chapter 6 - What My Father Knew Before He Died

Daniel didn't sleep that night.

Claire did.

Ethan did.

Even Noah, staying with Emily at a nearby hotel, probably did.

Daniel sat alone at the kitchen table in the temporary house, staring at the photograph Linda had hidden inside Noah's envelope.

Robert Reynolds.

Linda.

Peter Halden.

All younger.

All smiling.

Two months before Robert's fatal heart attack.

Ask Peter how your father really died.

Daniel knew what Linda wanted.

Chaos.

Suspicion.

Another emotional bomb tossed into his life.

He refused to assume murder.

He refused to turn grief into fantasy.

But he would investigate.

At 6:30 a.m., Samuel Whitaker called.

Daniel sent him a photograph of the note.

Samuel went silent.

“Have you ever seen that photo?”

“No.”

“Did Dad know Halden?”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat straighter.

“How well?”

“Well enough to distrust him.”

Samuel explained that Peter had approached Robert repeatedly about Reynolds Harbor.

Robert refused every offer.

Shortly before Robert's death, Peter attempted one final deal.

Linda supported it.

Robert refused again.

Daniel frowned.

“Then he died.”

“Six weeks later.”

“Was there anything suspicious?”

“Not medically.”

Daniel appreciated Samuel's precision.

“No mystery?”

“Robert had longstanding cardiac issues.”

Daniel exhaled.

So Linda's note might be manipulation.

“But,” Samuel added, “he believed someone had accessed trust documents without permission shortly before his death.”

“Who?”

“He didn't know.”

Daniel stood.

“Peter?”

“Possibly.”

“Mom?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel stared out the window.

“Why didn't Dad tell me?”

“You were twenty-eight and building your career. Robert thought he could handle it.”

That sounded exactly like his father.

Protect everyone.

Carry the problem alone.

Daniel almost smiled sadly.

Like father, like son.

By afternoon, investigators had located Peter Halden.

His attorneys advised him to cooperate.

Peter agreed to meet.

The meeting took place in a federal office with lawyers present.

Daniel wasn't permitted to question him freely, but Peter asked to speak to Daniel afterward.

Under supervision.

Peter looked exhausted.

His expensive suit couldn't hide it.

“You think I killed your father,” he said.

Daniel stared at him.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did my mother?”

“No.”

Daniel watched his face.

“How sure are you?”

“Completely.”

Peter leaned forward.

“Robert Reynolds died of a heart attack.”

“Then why would Mom tell me to ask you?”

“Because Linda enjoys turning people against each other.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“That we agree on.”

Peter looked down.

“I did business with her. I regret it.”

“You helped send me to Singapore.”

“Yes.”

“You helped her try to destroy my marriage.”

“I didn't know how far she intended to go.”

“You knew enough.”

Peter didn't deny it.

Daniel's voice hardened.

“Tell me about my father.”

Peter sighed.

“Robert discovered Linda had been siphoning money.”

Daniel stared.

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“About six hundred thousand.”

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Why wasn't she prosecuted?”

“Because Robert didn't want Vanessa and you dragged through scandal.”

Of course.

Even then, Robert protected them.

Peter continued.

“He planned to remove Linda from every financial role.”

“When?”

“The week he died.”

Daniel went still.

“Did Linda know?”

“Yes.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

“She knew he planned to expose her.”

“Yes.”

“And then he died.”

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Do you understand how that sounds?”

“I do.”

Peter's face tightened.

“But I was with Robert the day before he died. He was furious. He was stressed. His doctor had warned him.”

Daniel said nothing.

Peter added quietly, “Your mother didn't kill Robert.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she didn't need to.”

Daniel frowned.

Peter continued.

“After he died, she discovered something much more useful.”

“What?”

“His guilt.”

Daniel stared.

“About what?”

Peter looked toward the observing attorney.

Then back at Daniel.

“About you.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What about me?”

Peter hesitated.

“Your father knew Emily was pregnant.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“No.”

“He found out shortly before he died.”

Daniel stood.

The attorney gestured for him to remain seated.

Daniel ignored him.

“You're lying.”

“I'm not.”

“Dad would've told me.”

“He planned to.”

Daniel's mouth went dry.

“How do you know?”

“Because he asked me to help locate Emily.”

Daniel stared.

Peter explained.

Robert had overheard Linda discussing payments.

He investigated.

He learned Emily had a baby.

He suspected the child might be Daniel's.

Robert planned to confront Linda.

Then his heart attack happened.

“So Dad died knowing?”

“For about three days.”

Daniel sank back into his chair.

Three days.

Robert had carried that secret for three days.

“He wrote something,” Peter said.

Daniel looked up.

“A letter.”

“To me?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is it?”

“Linda took it.”

Daniel's hands clenched.

Peter continued.

“That's why she controls the story.”

Daniel remembered Noah's envelope.

Linda's planted clues.

Her confidence.

She always stayed one step ahead because she possessed the evidence everyone else lacked.

“Where would she keep it?”

Peter shook his head.

“No idea.”

Daniel thought of the old Reynolds house.

After Robert died, Linda sold it.

Most possessions went into storage.

Daniel suddenly remembered.

There was one place Linda never allowed anyone to enter.

A storage unit in Waltham.

She claimed it contained Robert's legal files.

Daniel called Vanessa.

“Do you know where Mom stores Dad's things?”

Vanessa was silent.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“She moved them.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“To where?”

“A private storage facility near Logan Airport.”

“Why?”

“She said she was consolidating.”

Daniel obtained a warrant-assisted search through investigators after financial evidence tied the storage unit to suspected fraud records.

That evening, boxes were opened.

Old tax returns.

Trust papers.

Photographs.

Jewelry.

Stacks of documents.

Then an investigator found a locked metal case.

Inside were letters.

One was addressed to Daniel.

His father's handwriting.

Daniel's hands shook.

The letter began:

Danny,

I have learned something about Linda that I should have understood years ago.

Daniel swallowed.

Robert described discovering Emily's pregnancy.

He apologized.

Not because he caused it.

Because he failed to see what Linda was doing.

I believe you may have a son.

Daniel stopped reading.

He pressed the letter against his mouth.

Claire stood beside him.

She touched his shoulder.

Daniel continued.

Robert wrote that he intended to contact Emily and tell Daniel everything.

Then the final lines.

If I fail to fix this, you must.

Do not punish the child for the mistakes adults made around him.

And do not spend your life trying to earn love from someone who uses love as leverage.

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father had known.

His father had tried.

That mattered.

More than Daniel expected.

The investigators found more.

Original trust records.

Bank statements.

Evidence Linda had forged signatures.

Enough to support serious charges.

But Linda herself remained missing.

Until Vanessa's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Linda.

Vanessa put the call on speaker.

“Mom.”

Linda sounded almost cheerful.

“I hear everyone's having a family reunion.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where are you?”

Linda paused.

“Daniel.”

“It's over.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“You always were optimistic.”

“You left Claire and Ethan in that apartment.”

“I left a grown woman in her own home.”

“You shut off the heat.”

“I made a mistake.”

“No. You made a choice.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“You hid Noah.”

Linda's tone cooled.

“That was complicated.”

“No. You lied.”

“Emily accepted the arrangement.”

“She was scared.”

“So was I.”

Daniel laughed.

“You?”

“Your father was going to leave me with nothing.”

“You would've had millions.”

“It wasn't his right.”

“It was his trust.”

“It was our life!”

For the first time, Linda lost control.

Her voice sharpened.

“I sacrificed everything for that family. Robert got to be admired. You got to become successful. Vanessa got to make mistakes. And I was supposed to smile.”

Daniel stared at the phone.

“So you punished Claire?”

“She replaced me.”

“No.”

“She did.”

“No, Mom. Claire loved me. That's what you couldn't control.”

Silence.

Then Linda said, “You think this ends with me in handcuffs?”

“It ends with you facing what you did.”

“You still need something from me.”

“What?”

A pause.

“Noah's original paternity test.”

Daniel froze.

“You already tested him?”

Claire stared.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Linda continued.

“Ten years ago.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

“You knew for certain.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was mine.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept him from me anyway.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was monstrous.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Where's the test?”

“With me.”

“Why does it matter? We'll do another.”

Linda laughed softly.

“It doesn't.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then why mention it?”

“Because I wanted you to know.”

“Know what?”

“That I knew.”

Silence.

Linda wanted the pain itself to be the message.

Daniel finally understood the smile at the camera.

It had never been about evidence.

It had been about power.

She wanted Daniel to know that every missing message, every broken relationship, every stolen year had been intentional.

Daniel's voice became calm.

“You lost.”

Linda stopped laughing.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don't have your trust.”

“I don't care.”

“You don't control Vanessa.”

Silence.

“You don't control Noah.”

Linda breathed harder.

“You don't control Claire.”

Nothing.

“And you don't control me.”

Daniel disconnected.

For the first time in his life, he ended a conversation with his mother without needing her approval.

But the story wasn't finished.

Because twenty minutes later investigators traced Linda's call.

She wasn't in Miami.

She wasn't overseas.

She wasn't hiding somewhere anonymous.

Linda Reynolds was less than fifteen miles away.

And when police reached the address, they discovered she had returned to the one place Daniel never expected.

May you like

Reynolds Harbor.
