Chapter 3 - The Woman Beneath the Black Umbrella

Victor did not leave the hospital that night.

Neither did Sam.

Daniel arranged a private room for the boy two floors below Lily's unit, guarded by two security officers.

Victor had insisted.

If Isabelle knew Sam had witnessed her meeting, the child remained dangerous to her.

At 2:13 in the morning, Daniel entered Lily's room.

Victor was sitting beside the bed.

"She's stable?"

Daniel asked.

Victor nodded.

"Sleeping."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"We found something."

Victor carefully released Lily's hand.

They moved into the corridor.

"What?"

"Isabelle didn't exist before twelve years ago."

Victor stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"Exactly what it sounds like."

Daniel handed him a tablet.

"Isabelle Mercer. Born in Connecticut. Private schools. European university. Art foundation work."

"I know her background."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"You know the background someone created."

Victor looked down.

Several documents were highlighted.

"The birth certificate was filed late."

"How late?"

"Twenty-seven years."

Victor frowned.

"The university records don't exist."

Daniel continued.

"Neither do the schools."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"Then who is she?"

"We don't know yet."

Victor looked through the glass at Lily.

"Find out."

Daniel hesitated.

"There's more."

Victor said nothing.

"Someone accessed your estate documents six months ago."

"Isabelle?"

"The login came from her home laptop."

Victor thought back.

Six months earlier, Isabelle had suggested updating his will.

She had framed it as responsible family planning.

Victor had refused.

His estate structure had been created before their marriage.

Lily remained the primary beneficiary.

"I should have seen it."

Daniel didn't answer.

Victor's voice was bitter.

"I thought she wanted stability."

"People see what they want to see."

Victor looked at him.

Daniel immediately regretted the sentence.

But Victor nodded.

"You're right."

The next morning, detectives arrived.

Sam gave a formal statement.

Victor gave another.

Lily was too weak to speak with police.

The USB recording was copied and secured as evidence.

By noon, authorities issued a warrant for Isabelle.

But Isabelle had disappeared.

Her passport was still inside Victor's estate.

Her phone had been found in the abandoned sedan.

No credit cards were used.

No cameras captured her leaving the county.

She had vanished with professional precision.

That worried Victor more than anything.

Ordinary criminals ran.

Prepared criminals disappeared.

At three that afternoon, Sam came to Lily's room.

He stood awkwardly near the doorway.

Victor noticed him.

"Come in."

Sam looked at Lily.

"Is she okay?"

"Getting stronger."

Lily opened her eyes.

Victor leaned toward her.

"Someone came to see you."

Lily turned her head.

Sam stepped closer.

"This is Sam," Victor said. "He's the reason you're here."

Lily studied him.

Sam looked embarrassed.

"You stopped them from burying me?"

Sam nodded.

"Yeah."

Lily considered this.

Then whispered, "That's weird."

Sam blinked.

Victor almost laughed.

"Very weird," Sam agreed.

Lily smiled faintly.

It was the first smile Victor had seen since the nightmare began.

Victor looked between them.

Two children who should never have been connected by tragedy.

Yet somehow they were.

That afternoon, Daniel received another breakthrough.

The man Sam had seen with Isabelle matched one of the doctors connected to Lily's case.

Dr. Marcus Vale.

He had not signed Lily's death certificate.

But he had consulted at the hospital the night Lily was admitted.

Victor remembered him.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Thin glasses.

Calm voice.

Victor had barely noticed him.

He had been too focused on Lily.

Now his face appeared on Daniel's tablet.

"Where is he?" Victor asked.

"Missing."

Victor looked at Sam.

"That's him?"

Sam stared at the photograph.

"Yes."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Find him."

But Dr. Vale found them first.

At 7:40 p.m., the hospital received a call.

The caller asked specifically for Victor.

Daniel traced it.

Prepaid phone.

Victor answered.

"Who is this?"

A long pause.

Then a man's voice.

"Victor Hale?"

"Yes."

"This is Marcus Vale."

Victor stood slowly.

Daniel immediately activated recording equipment.

"Where are you?"

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"I didn't call for forgiveness."

Victor's voice turned cold.

"Good."

Vale breathed heavily.

"I called because Isabelle is going to kill me."

Victor looked at Daniel.

"Why?"

"Because I know too much."

"You helped drug my daughter."

Silence.

"I was told no permanent harm would come to her."

Victor almost laughed.

"You put her in a coffin."

"I monitored the dose."

"From where?"

"Remotely."

"How?"

"The hospital."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Who else was involved?"

Vale hesitated.

"Two physicians. One administrator. A funeral-home employee."

Daniel wrote rapidly.

Victor said, "Names."

"I want protection."

"You don't get to bargain."

"I have evidence."

"Then give it to police."

Vale's voice became desperate.

"You don't understand who Isabelle works for."

Victor froze.

"Works for?"

"This wasn't originally her idea."

Victor felt a new wave of anger.

"Then whose was it?"

Static filled the call.

Vale lowered his voice.

"Someone who has been trying to get control of Hale Industries for years."

Victor thought through enemies.

There were many.

But only a handful understood the family trust.

"Name."

Vale hesitated.

Then whispered, "Richard Hale."

Victor's face went blank.

Daniel stopped writing.

Richard Hale was Victor's younger brother.

They had not spoken in nine years.

Once business partners, they had split after Richard was accused of stealing from the company.

Victor forced him out.

Richard disappeared overseas.

Victor had believed him gone forever.

Vale continued.

"Isabelle was recruited before she ever met you."

Victor felt physically ill.

"The marriage?"

"Part of the plan."

Victor looked toward Lily's room.

"Everything?"

"Everything."

The line crackled.

Then Vale gasped.

A noise sounded in the background.

Footsteps.

"Wait."

Victor straightened.

"Vale?"

The doctor whispered.

"They found me."

The call ended.

Victor immediately looked at Daniel.

"Trace it."

"Working."

Thirty seconds later, Daniel had an approximate location.

An abandoned motel twelve miles outside town.

Victor started walking.

Daniel stepped in front of him.

"No."

Victor's eyes flashed.

"Move."

"Police go first."

"He's going to die."

"And Isabelle might be waiting for you."

Victor stopped.

That was exactly what she might want.

An hour later, police entered the motel room.

Vale was alive.

Barely.

He had been struck unconscious.

On the wall above him, written in black marker, were six words.

VICTOR, YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HER SLEEP.

Isabelle had been there.

And she had left something else.

A photograph.

Victor and Lily outside her school.

Taken from across the street.

On the back was a message.

One daughter saved.

But what about the boy?

Victor's blood ran cold.

He called the hospital.

No answer from Sam's security team.

Daniel dialed another number.

Nothing.

Victor turned toward him.

"Get back there."

They raced to the hospital.

When Victor reached Sam's room, the guards were unconscious.

The window stood open.

May you like

The bed was empty.

And on the floor lay Sam's torn hospital bracelet.
