Chapter 5 - The Secret from Nine Years Ago

Marco’s team secured the mansion within minutes.

Victor escaped.

But he left something behind.

A flash drive.

It had been placed deliberately on Adrian’s desk.

The message inside contained old financial records, photographs, and recordings proving something Adrian had never known.

Victor had not acted alone nine years earlier.

Someone inside the Moretti organization had helped him.

Someone Adrian still trusted.

The discovery shattered the certainty on which Adrian had built his life.

For two days, nobody left the mansion.

Marco investigated quietly.

I remained under protection.

Adrian barely slept.

Then Claire disappeared.

Her room was empty.

Her phone was gone.

Her car remained in the garage.

Adrian assumed the worst.

I refused to.

“Claire warned me.”

“That proves nothing.”

“She protected me.”

“People can perform loyalty.”

“Not for twenty-three years.”

Adrian looked exhausted.

“You don't know my world.”

“No. But I know people.”

Hours later, Winston found Claire’s scarf near the old service tunnel beneath the kitchen.

That changed everything.

Claire had not left.

She had been taken.

Security footage revealed a maintenance worker entering with false credentials during the blackout.

Marco traced him to Victor.

The betrayal was not Claire.

Someone had used the confusion to abduct her.

Then Victor called.

His demand was simple.

Adrian would meet him alone.

In exchange, Claire would live.

Adrian agreed before Marco could object.

“So this is what you do?” I demanded after the call. “Walk into traps?”

“If necessary.”

“You know Victor wants revenge.”

“Yes.”

“And you're giving him exactly what he wants.”

“Claire has served my family for twenty-three years.”

“So we find another way.”

“There isn't time.”

I looked at Winston.

Then at the flash drive.

And suddenly I remembered something.

The damaged document.

The one Winston had stolen the day Adrian first laughed.

“What was on that paper?”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Tell me.”

It had been a property transfer involving an abandoned warehouse on the Chicago River.

Victor’s chosen meeting place was three blocks away.

Coincidence?

Marco did not think so.

Records showed that the warehouse had once been indirectly controlled by a shell company connected to Victor.

Suddenly the flash drive looked less like evidence and more like bait.

Victor wanted Adrian focused on the past.

The real plan involved the property.

Marco discovered surveillance equipment and communications hardware hidden inside.

Victor had been monitoring the Moretti organization for months.

We finally had something he did not know we had.

An advantage.

Adrian still went to the meeting.

But not alone.

Marco’s team surrounded the area.

Police contacts were alerted anonymously.

Claire was found alive inside a locked office.

And Victor, realizing he had lost control of the trap, fled again.

This time, however, he made a mistake.

He called me.

My phone rang at 1:17 a.m.

Unknown number.

“Elena Brooks.”

His voice was calm.

“You've caused a great deal of trouble.”

My blood went cold.

“You've done that yourself.”

He laughed quietly.

“I understand why Adrian likes you.”

I said nothing.

“You make him careless.”

“No. You mistake caring for carelessness.”

A pause.

Then Victor said, “Ask Adrian what happens to people he loves.”

The line went dead.

Adrian had heard everything.

He stood across the room, face pale with controlled fury.

I walked toward him.

“You don't get to decide that loving people destroys them.”

“Elena—”

“Luca died because Victor betrayed him. Claire was taken because Victor is cruel. None of that happened because you cared.”

His voice dropped.

“You don't understand what I could lose.”

“Then stop treating me like I've already been lost.”

That silenced him.

For nine years, Adrian had lived as if grief were proof that love had been a mistake.

That night, for the first time, I watched him question it.

Then Marco entered carrying a tablet.

“We found Victor.”

Adrian looked at the screen.

Marco continued.

“He's going to Milwaukee.”

My stomach dropped.

“My father.”

Victor had finally discovered the one person who mattered to me before Adrian Moretti ever did.

May you like

And suddenly this was no longer only Adrian’s past coming for him.

It was coming for mine.
