Chapter 5 - The Test Daniel Couldn’t Ignore

Daniel read his father’s letter twice.
Then a third time.
The handwriting made everything worse.
His father, Robert Hayes, had always written in careful block letters.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, Emily has returned or the truth has found you without her help. Either way, I owe you an apology.
Daniel stopped.
Emily sat across from him.
Margaret stood by the window.
He continued.
Robert explained how he had discovered Margaret’s attempted payment.
How he hired a private investigator.
How the investigator located Emily and infant Noah.
Robert had planned to tell Daniel.
Then he learned Claire had already visited Emily.
That changed everything.
According to the investigator’s report, Claire had approached Emily twice.
The second meeting happened outside Noah’s pediatrician’s office.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Do you remember?”
Emily’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“You never mentioned it.”
“I didn’t think it mattered anymore.”
“What happened?”
“She told me you were dating.”
“That part was true.”
“Yes.”
“She said you knew about Noah.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
Emily continued.
“She told me you wanted no involvement.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“She said what?”
“I didn’t believe her.”
“Good.”
“But then she showed me something.”
“What?”
“A letter supposedly signed by you.”
Daniel stared.
“Do you have it?”
Emily nodded.
“At home.”
Margaret whispered, “My God.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You helped start this.”
She lowered her head.
“I know.”
“But Claire kept it alive.”
The investigator’s report documented Claire visiting Emily’s neighborhood several times.
Robert had confronted Claire privately.
Claire denied everything.
Then Robert made the decision Daniel would struggle for years to forgive.
He did not tell his son.
He believed Daniel was finally happy.
He feared destroying Daniel’s new relationship based on evidence that remained circumstantial.
So he sent money anonymously to Noah.
Then illness overtook him.
His final letter contained one more warning.
Claire knows more than she will ever admit willingly. If Emily returns, believe documents before explanations.
Daniel lowered the letter.
Emily looked at him.
“What now?”
“Now I stop asking Claire for the truth.”
He gathered the documents.
“I prove it.”
Daniel contacted an attorney.
Then he met Claire.
Not at their home.
Not privately.
At his lawyer’s office.
Claire arrived furious.
“You brought an attorney?”
“Yes.”
“This is insane.”
Daniel placed the photograph on the table.
Claire looked at it.
For the first time, she seemed afraid.
“My father had you followed.”
Claire said nothing.
“He knew you visited Emily.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Stop saying that.”
Daniel placed the forged email beside it.
“Did you create this?”
“No.”
“Did you know it was fake?”
Claire hesitated.
That was enough.
Daniel leaned back.
“I’m filing for divorce.”
Claire’s face went white.
“You’re destroying our marriage over a woman who abandoned you.”
“No.”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“I’m ending a marriage because my wife knowingly participated in keeping my child from me.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You think Emily is innocent?”
“I never said that.”
“She kept him from you too.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re going to forgive her?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer surprised Claire.
Daniel continued.
“This isn’t about Emily and me. It’s about Noah.”
Claire stared at him.
“You always loved her.”
Daniel did not answer.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“That’s what this is really about.”
“No.”
“You never looked at me the way you looked at her in that hospital.”
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
“Claire…”
“I spent seven years trying to become the person you would choose.”
“And that was your mistake.”
She flinched.
“You shouldn’t have had to manufacture a choice.”
Claire wiped her cheek.
Then something changed.
The anger disappeared.
She looked tired.
“I wrote the email.”
Daniel stopped.
His attorney looked up.
Claire laughed through tears.
“There. Happy?”
Daniel felt nothing resembling happiness.
“Why?”
“Because I loved you.”
“That isn’t love.”
“I know that now.”
“Did you know Emily was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Did you tell her I knew?”
“Yes.”
Every answer felt like losing Noah again.
“Did you send the threatening photograph?”
Claire looked genuinely confused.
“No.”
Daniel studied her.
“I swear.”
For once, he believed her.
That meant someone else had sent it.
Someone who knew the secret.
The attorney interrupted.
“Who else knew?”
Claire hesitated.
“One person.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Who?”
“My father.”
Richard Whitmore.
A wealthy hospital-board member who had helped Daniel secure several early career opportunities.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
“How much did he know?”
“Everything.”
“Why?”
Claire looked ashamed.
“Because he helped me.”
The room went silent.
Daniel realized the lie had never belonged to one jealous young woman.
An influential man had helped sustain it.
And if Richard Whitmore had been watching Noah recently, the threat might have had nothing to do with romance.
It might have been about exposure.
Daniel stood.
“Where is your father?”
Claire looked at him.
“He flew back into town yesterday.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Yesterday?”
“The same day Emily showed up?”
Claire nodded slowly.
Daniel took out his phone.
He called Emily.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
His pulse quickened.
At Emily’s apartment, Noah was building a cardboard rocket while Emily made lunch.
Her phone was charging in the bedroom.
She didn’t hear it.
She did hear the knock.
Three slow taps.
Emily walked to the door.
“Who is it?”
A man answered.
“Richard Whitmore.”
Emily froze.
She knew the name.
Claire’s father.
Noah looked up.
“Mom?”
Emily stepped backward.
“What do you want?”
Richard spoke through the closed door.
“To correct a mistake that should have been corrected seven years ago.”
Emily stared at the lock.
Her phone continued vibrating in the other room.
Daniel calling.
Again.
And again.
Richard knocked once more.
“Emily, I’m not here to hurt you.”
She didn’t open the door.
“Then leave.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Claire lied to Daniel about one thing.”
Emily’s heartbeat accelerated.
“What?”
Richard’s answer came quietly through the door.
“She didn’t act alone.”
Emily looked toward Noah.
Then back at the door.
Richard continued.
“And if Daniel sees the original documents, my daughter will be the least of your problems.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
Because seven years earlier, she had believed Claire and Margaret were the reason she disappeared.
Now she realized there had been another person behind the decision.
Someone powerful enough to manipulate Daniel’s career.
Someone who had never intended for Emily—or Noah—to come back.
May you like
And that person was standing on the other side of her front door.
