Chapter 3 - The Secret My Family Buried for Six Years

The sentence kept echoing in my mind.

"Is this the woman Daddy was going to marry?"

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Emma.

Not Sloane.

Not even the four boys who had no idea they had just shattered the carefully constructed world of three adults standing in front of them.

Children had a way of saying the truth without understanding how powerful it was.

They didn't know about lies.

They didn't know about reputation.

They didn't know about family expectations or business alliances.

They only knew what they had been told.

And apparently, these boys knew something that Sloane had never known.

They knew I was their father.

I looked at Emma.

Her face had gone pale.

"Sloane..." I started.

But even I didn't know what I was going to say.

How could I explain something I didn't understand myself?

How could I tell the woman waiting to become my wife that six years ago, before she ever entered my life, I had another life?

A life that had apparently continued without me.

Sloane looked at me.

For the first time since I had known her, she didn't look perfectly composed.

The elegant woman who always knew what to say was completely silent.

Her eyes moved between me and Emma.

Then to the boys.

Finally, back to me.

"Alexander..."

Her voice was quiet.

"Tell me this isn't what it looks like."

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the worst part was...

I couldn't.

I couldn't tell her it wasn't true.

Because it was.

My entire world had just changed.

"Mom?"

One of the boys tugged gently on Emma's sleeve.

She immediately looked down.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we leaving?"

The question broke something inside me.

Because these boys were not thinking about the chaos around them.

They weren't thinking about my engagement.

They weren't thinking about the impossible truth.

They were only thinking about whether they were safe.

Emma smiled weakly.

"We're okay."

But I noticed something.

The way she said it.

The way she looked at them.

The way she positioned herself between them and everyone else.

It wasn't just a mother protecting her children.

It was someone who had spent years protecting a secret.

A secret she never wanted to keep.

A secret someone forced her to carry.

And suddenly, anger started replacing my confusion.

Not anger toward Emma.

Not yet.

Anger toward whoever created this situation.

Because someone knew.

Someone knew these boys existed.

Someone knew Emma was alive.

Someone knew I had children.

And they allowed me to live six years believing I had lost everything.

I looked at Emma.

"Who knew?"

Her eyes lifted.

"What?"

"Who knew about them?"

She didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

Someone did.

I stepped closer.

"Emma."

Her lips trembled.

"Your family."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even though some part of me had already suspected it.

My family.

The same people who had shown me those documents.

The same people who convinced me she betrayed me.

The same people who told me to forget her.

My stomach tightened.

"No."

Emma looked at me sadly.

"Alexander..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"My family wouldn't do that."

But even as I said it...

I heard how weak the words sounded.

Because six years earlier, I had defended them the same way.

My family wouldn't lie.

My family wouldn't manipulate me.

My family wanted what was best for me.

I had believed those things because believing them was easier than questioning everything.

But now four children were standing in front of me.

Children who should have been part of my life.

Children I never knew existed.

Sloane stepped forward.

"Wait."

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked directly at Emma.

"You knew he was engaged?"

Emma lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

"And you still came here?"

"I didn't come here for him."

Sloane's expression changed.

"Then why?"

Emma looked at the boys.

The answer was obvious.

But hearing her say it made it real.

"Because my children deserved to know their father."

The word father felt strange.

Heavy.

Beautiful.

Painful.

My children.

For six years, I had thought I had no children.

Now I had four.

Four sons.

I studied their faces.

The oldest-looking boy was watching me carefully.

Not scared.

Just curious.

Like he was trying to understand why I looked so emotional.

"What are their names?"

I asked quietly.

Emma hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Leo."

She pointed to the first boy.

"Noah."

The second.

"Ethan."

The third.

"Daniel."

The fourth.

I repeated their names silently.

Leo.

Noah.

Ethan.

Daniel.

Names I should have known.

Names I should have been saying every morning.

Names I should have written on birthday cards.

Names I should have whispered when they were sick.

Instead, I was hearing them for the first time in a restaurant bathroom.

A wave of guilt hit me so hard I almost couldn't breathe.

"I missed everything."

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Emma looked at me.

"I know."

The sadness in her voice hurt more than anger would have.

Because she wasn't blaming me.

She was mourning with me.

"Alexander."

Sloane's voice interrupted.

I turned.

She was holding herself together, but barely.

"Are you telling me you were about to propose to me while you had four children you didn't know about?"

The question was fair.

And it destroyed me.

"I didn't know."

"I know you didn't."

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

"But that's exactly the problem."

I looked down.

Because she was right.

This wasn't just about Emma.

This wasn't just about the past.

This was about Sloane too.

A woman who had walked into my life believing she was building a future with someone who had no secrets.

And now she was discovering that my entire life had been built on missing pieces.

"I need answers."

I looked at Emma.

"All of them."

Emma nodded slowly.

"I'll tell you everything."

Then she looked toward the restaurant entrance.

"Not here."

"Why?"

Her expression changed.

Fear returned.

Because there was something else.

Something I hadn't noticed.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Emma looked at the boys.

Then back at me.

"Alexander..."

She lowered her voice.

"Your family didn't just hide the truth from you."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?"

She took a breath.

"They tried to make sure you would never find out."

The room became silent again.

Sloane looked confused.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"What did they do?"

Emma looked away.

And for a moment, I saw the woman from six years ago.

The woman who had been hurt.

The woman who had been forced to leave.

"The night I disappeared..."

Her voice cracked.

"I didn't leave you."

My chest tightened.

"Then what happened?"

She looked directly into my eyes.

"They came to me."

The words felt like a warning.

"Who?"

Emma swallowed.

"Your father."

I froze.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"And your grandfather."

The names felt impossible.

The two men who built my life.

The two men who taught me everything.

The two men I trusted more than anyone.

Emma continued.

"They told me if I loved you, I had to disappear."

My hands curled into fists.

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because they didn't want you to choose me."

A painful silence followed.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"They already had your future planned."

I thought about Sloane.

The engagement.

The families.

The business partnership.

The perfect arrangement.

And suddenly, I wondered...

Was Sloane chosen because they loved me?

Or because she fit their plan?

The restaurant lights suddenly seemed too bright.

The perfect evening.

The perfect proposal.

The perfect future.

Everything looked different now.

I reached into my jacket pocket.

My fingers touched the velvet ring box.

A symbol of the life everyone expected me to choose.

Then I looked at my four sons.

Four boys who were never supposed to exist in my world.

But somehow...

They were the only thing that felt real.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time in my life...

I questioned everything my family had ever told me.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

My father's name appeared.

Everyone went silent.

Emma's face changed immediately.

"Don't answer."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her voice became barely a whisper.

"Because if he knows you're with me..."

She paused.

"And if he knows you know the truth..."

My heart sank.

"What?"

Emma looked terrified.

"He'll do whatever it takes to control the situation again."

The phone continued ringing.

My father's name glowing on the screen.

Six years of lies.

Four children.

One impossible truth.

And the man who might have destroyed my life was calling me at that exact moment.

I stared at the phone.

Then at Emma.

Then at my sons.

And I made a decision.

For the first time in my life...

I ignored my family.

I answered.

"Hello, Dad."

There was a long pause.

Then my father's calm voice came through.

"Alexander."

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because his next words proved he already knew.

"I see you've finally met Emma."
