Chapter 3 - The Man My Sister Thought She Knew

At 4:02 A.M., Ethan Vance stopped pretending.

Madison would tell me later exactly what happened.

She had been sitting beside him in Dad’s study, drinking champagne and talking about the office she wanted after the board meeting.

Ethan barely listened.

My laptop sat open on Grandpa’s old mahogany desk.

Lines of code filled the screen.

Madison thought he was preparing tomorrow’s presentation.

Then a red notification appeared.

PROXY ROUTE SUSPENDED.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What’s wrong?” Madison asked.

“Nothing.”

He typed rapidly.

Another alert appeared.

SECONDARY ROUTE REJECTED.

“Ethan?”

“I said it’s nothing.”

He closed the screen.

Madison laughed nervously.

“You’re acting weird.”

He looked at her.

Not lovingly.

Not even impatiently.

He looked at her like an engineer examining a malfunctioning machine.

“Where is Claire?”

Madison blinked.

“Gone.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You took her laptop. What else did she have?”

Madison shrugged.

“A suitcase.”

“What was inside?”

“How should I know?”

Ethan stood.

“Think.”

His voice frightened her.

Madison had spent months believing Ethan adored her.

He sent flowers to her office.

He booked impossible restaurant reservations.

He talked about Monaco and private villas and the future they would build together.

But that night, Madison finally saw the man behind the performance.

“What are you looking for?”

“A box.”

Her smile disappeared.

“What box?”

“A cedar box.”

Madison remembered it.

Grandpa’s gift.

She had seen me carrying it after his funeral.

Ethan swore.

Then he grabbed his phone and walked out.

By sunrise, the storm had weakened.

I spent the remaining hours inside the bank with Thomas.

We documented everything.

Every attempted transfer.

Every offshore account.

Every proxy credential Ethan had used.

Thomas contacted First Cedar’s fraud division.

They contacted federal authorities.

By 7:30 A.M., two agents arrived.

Special Agent Daniel Cross listened while Thomas explained the trust structure.

Then he turned to me.

“Did Ethan Vance have permission to use your computer?”

“No.”

“Your authentication credentials?”

“No.”

“Did you give your sister permission to take the laptop?”

“No.”

Cross closed his notebook.

“Then we have enough to begin.”

“Begin what?”

“Watching.”

I frowned.

“You’re not arresting him?”

“Not yet.”

Thomas answered before Cross could.

“The system needs him to initiate the final transfer.”

Cross nodded.

“We want the complete chain.”

I understood.

Grandpa’s trap wasn’t merely financial.

It was evidentiary.

Ethan needed to expose himself.

At 8:40, I left the bank.

I hadn’t slept.

My hair smelled like snow and stale office air.

I was still wearing the same navy winter coat.

Thomas offered to arrange different clothes.

I refused.

I wanted my father to see exactly how I looked after he threw me into a blizzard.

At 9:31, I reached Hale Tower.

Thirty-two floors of glass and steel rose above downtown Manhattan.

Grandpa had built the company from almost nothing.

My father had spent his life believing that meant it belonged to him.

Security stopped me immediately.

“Ms. Hale, your building credentials were revoked.”

“By whom?”

“Richard Hale.”

Of course.

Then the elevator behind me opened.

Thomas Reeves stepped out.

Beside him stood Agent Cross.

The security guard straightened.

Cross showed his identification.

“She’s coming upstairs.”

Nobody argued.

The elevator climbed.

Twenty.

Twenty-five.

Thirty.

My heartbeat increased with every floor.

When the doors opened on thirty-two, I could hear voices inside the boardroom.

Dad was speaking.

“…today marks the beginning of a new generation of Hale leadership.”

I almost smiled.

Perfect timing.

The boardroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

My father stopped speaking.

Madison went pale.

Ethan didn’t.

He smiled.

That frightened me more.

Dad stood.

“What are you doing here?”

I walked inside.

Snow melted from my coat onto the polished floor.

Madison recovered first.

“What is this garbage doing here?”

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Dad pointed toward the door.

“Leave.”

“No.”

His face reddened.

“You signed away your rights last night.”

“To the cabin.”

“To this family.”

I looked around the room.

“Those aren’t the same thing.”

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

My laptop sat open in front of him.

Seeing it there made something inside me burn.

He noticed my stare.

“Looking for this?”

“Enjoy it while you can.”

Madison laughed.

“Security!”

Nobody came.

She looked toward the door.

Agent Cross was standing outside.

Her laughter died.

Dad slammed his palm against the table.

“What is going on?”

I looked at the clock.

9:57.

Three minutes.

Ethan checked it too.

Then he smiled.

“Actually, Richard, Claire should stay.”

Dad turned.

“What?”

“She deserves to witness the dissolution.”

Madison looked confused.

“Dissolution?”

Ethan ignored her.

9:58.

I walked to the opposite end of the table.

My father stared at me.

“You’re penniless, Claire.”

I said nothing.

9:59.

Ethan placed his fingers on my keyboard.

The directors exchanged nervous glances.

Madison whispered, “Ethan, what are you doing?”

He looked at her.

For the first time, there was no affection in his expression.

“Winning.”

The second hand moved.

Ten seconds.

Nine.

Eight.

My father stood.

“Ethan?”

Seven.

Six.

Five.

Madison reached for him.

He pulled away.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

10:00 A.M.

Ethan pressed ENTER.

Nothing happened.

His smile disappeared.

He pressed it again.

Every screen in the boardroom went black.

Then crimson.

AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.

ALL DOMESTIC AND OFFSHORE TRANSFERS SEIZED UNDER FEDERAL FRAUD SUSPICION.

MASTER OVERRIDE EXECUTED.

CHIEF TRUSTEE:

CLAIRE HALE.

Nobody moved.

My father slowly turned toward me.

Madison whispered my name.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“No.”

He hit another key.

“No.”

Another.

“No, no, no.”

I watched him unravel.

“What did you do?” he shouted.

I met his eyes.

“I opened Grandpa’s box.”

May you like

And the terror that appeared on Ethan’s face told me something I hadn’t known.

He knew exactly what that meant.
