Chapter 6 - The Secret Beneath the Moretti NameDante read the sentence three times.

Ask Matteo who your father really was.
He looked at his brother.
“What does this mean?”
Matteo closed his eyes.
“Not tonight.”
“Matteo.”
“I just woke from a three-week coma.”
Dante stared.
Matteo opened one eye.
“Technically not a coma,” Nina corrected from across the room.
Matteo managed a weak smile.
“Thank you, Nurse Sunshine.”
For a moment, tension broke.
Then Dante placed the photograph on the table.
“Tomorrow.”
Matteo nodded.
“Tomorrow.”
Morning came slowly.
Mia ate three pancakes.
Dante personally made sure of it.
They were terrible.
Mia informed him of this immediately.
“Too brown.”
“They're pancakes.”
“They're crunchy.”
Elina tried not to laugh.
Dante looked offended.
“I run six companies.”
“And apparently none of them are restaurants,” Elina said.
Matteo, now sitting in a wheelchair near the breakfast table, laughed so hard Nina warned him to stop.
For twenty minutes, the Moretti estate felt normal.
Then investigators returned.
Marco had been found.
He had attempted to cross into Canada using false identification.
He was arrested.
With Samuel, Evan, and Marco in custody, the immediate threat ended.
But Dante still wanted the truth.
That afternoon, he and Matteo sat alone in the library.
The photograph rested between them.
Matteo spoke first.
“I found this months ago.”
“Where?”
“Father's old safe.”
“And?”
“The woman is Isabella Conti.”
“Who is she?”
“Our mother’s sister.”
Dante frowned.
“Mom didn't have a sister.”
“Yes, she did.”
“Why didn't we know?”
“Because Isabella disappeared before you were born.”
Matteo explained.
Their father, Antonio Moretti, had not created the financial empire everyone attributed to him.
Much of it originated with Isabella.
She was brilliant with numbers.
She built legitimate investments while Antonio built influence elsewhere.
Then Samuel began moving money.
Isabella discovered it.
She threatened exposure.
Soon afterward, she vanished from the family’s life.
For decades, everyone assumed she had fled.
Matteo discovered something different.
“She didn't disappear voluntarily.”
Dante’s stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“Samuel forced her out. He convinced Dad she'd betrayed the family.”
“Did Father know?”
“Not until years later.”
Dante looked at the photograph.
“And what does this have to do with who my father was?”
Matteo hesitated.
“The note is misleading.”
“How?”
“Samuel wanted you suspicious.”
“Of what?”
“Your identity.”
Dante stared.
Matteo continued.
“Samuel knew one secret could break you emotionally.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“Say it.”
“Our father wasn't your biological father.”
Silence filled the library.
Dante looked toward the windows.
Rain had stopped.
Sunlight crossed the floor.
“Who was?”
“I don't know.”
Dante laughed once.
No humor.
“So everything was a lie.”
“No.”
“Don't.”
“Dante.”
“He wasn't my father.”
Matteo’s voice hardened.
“He was.”
Dante turned.
“Biology doesn't erase thirty-five years.”
“You knew?”
“Only recently.”
“And you didn't tell me.”
“I was trying to verify it.”
Dante walked away.
Anger came first.
Then confusion.
Then something surprisingly painful.
He remembered Antonio teaching him to drive.
Teaching him chess.
Standing beside him at their mother’s funeral.
Calling him son.
Every memory suddenly felt unstable.
Matteo rolled his wheelchair closer.
“Listen to me.”
Dante did not turn.
“Dad knew.”
That changed everything.
“What?”
“He knew from the beginning.”
Dante faced him.
Matteo continued.
“Mom was pregnant when they met.”
“And he married her?”
“Yes.”
“He knew I wasn't his?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“I found a letter.”
Matteo handed him a folded page.
Dante recognized his father’s handwriting.
He read.
The letter had been written shortly before Antonio died.
It explained that Dante’s biological father had abandoned his mother before learning about the pregnancy.
Antonio met her months later.
He chose her.
And he chose Dante.
One line stopped him.
A father is not the man whose blood you inherit. A father is the man who stays when staying costs him something.
Dante lowered the letter.
His eyes burned.
Matteo looked away, giving him privacy without leaving.
For years, Dante had believed his father valued blood above everything.
Yet the truth was the opposite.
Antonio had protected a secret not because he was ashamed.
Because he never wanted Dante to believe he belonged less.
Samuel had discovered the truth and planned to weaponize it.
Another manipulation.
Another way to divide brothers.
It failed.
Dante sat beside Matteo.
“You're still my brother.”
Matteo looked offended.
“Unfortunately.”
Dante laughed.
Then embraced him carefully.
For the first time since the ambush, neither man was afraid of appearing weak.
Later that afternoon, Elina found Dante in the garden.
Mia chased butterflies nearby.
“You okay?” Elina asked.
“No.”
She nodded.
“Fair answer.”
He looked at her.
“Apparently I've spent my entire life misunderstanding my father.”
“Most people do.”
“You sound experienced.”
“My mother thinks I'm wasting my life because I work here.”
Dante smiled.
“Maybe she has a point.”
Elina raised an eyebrow.
“Are you firing me?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Mia ran toward them.
“I found something!”
She opened her hands.
Nothing was inside.
“It flew away.”
Dante laughed.
Then his phone rang.
The investigator.
He listened.
His smile disappeared.
Samuel had agreed to cooperate.
Not because he regretted anything.
Because he wanted a deal.
And he had offered information about one final account Matteo had never discovered.
An account containing enough money to implicate dozens of people.
But there was a condition.
Samuel would reveal the location only to Dante.
Face-to-face.
Matteo immediately objected.
“Don't go.”
“He's in custody.”
“That's not what worries me.”
“What does?”
“He always has another reason.”
Dante knew that.
But the hidden account could close the final gaps.
It could prove exactly who funded Marco.
It could expose every corrupted structure Samuel had created.
Dante agreed to the meeting.
The following morning, he entered a secure interview room.
Samuel sat behind the table.
No elegant suit this time.
No flowers.
No smile.
Dante sat opposite him.
“Where is it?”
Samuel leaned closer.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
“The money isn't the secret.”
Dante stared.
Samuel smiled.
“The secret is what your brother plans to do with the Moretti empire now that he's awake.”
Dante’s expression hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
Samuel whispered:
“Matteo never intended to give it back to you.”
May you like
And although Dante knew Samuel was a liar, one uncomfortable truth remained.
He had never asked Matteo what came next.
