Chapter 5 - The Price of a Child’s LifeRain began falling before they reached the chapel.

Lorenzo sat in the rear of the armored SUV, watching water streak across the window.
Across from him, Adrian Russo’s wrists were restrained.
Adrian looked almost amused.
“You brought me.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
“You’re actually going to trade me for the girl.”
Still nothing.
Adrian leaned back.
“Your father would be ashamed.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“My father is dead.”
“Yes.”
Adrian smiled.
“And yours soon will be too,” Lorenzo added.
The smile disappeared.
Marco sat beside the driver studying a tablet.
“No movement around the chapel.”
“That means nothing,” Lorenzo said.
“Agreed.”
They had brought only four vehicles.
Enough force to respond.
Not enough to look like an army.
The old chapel sat beyond abandoned farmland, isolated by trees and decades of neglect.
Adrian watched the scenery.
“You think Shepherd will expose himself.”
“He already did.”
“Do you know who he is?”
Lorenzo did not answer.
They had narrowed the suspects.
Five senior security officers.
One had been off the estate.
Two had digital logs proving they were elsewhere during Lena’s abduction.
That left two.
Nicholas Vale.
And Dominic Serra.
Both had served Lorenzo for more than a decade.
Both knew his schedules.
Both knew the mansion.
Both had access to the west wing.
Lorenzo trusted both men.
Which meant he trusted neither now.
The SUV stopped.
The chapel appeared through the rain.
Broken stone walls.
Dark windows.
A rusted bell tower.
One light burned inside.
Marco turned.
“Ready?”
Lorenzo opened the door.
Adrian laughed.
“You’re walking into a trap.”
Lorenzo looked back.
“I know.”
Rain soaked his black coat as he crossed the muddy ground.
Marco brought Adrian behind him.
Two guards remained near the vehicles.
The chapel door opened.
A man stepped outside.
Dominic Serra.
Lorenzo stopped.
Dominic had worked for the Moretti family for eighteen years.
He attended Lorenzo’s father’s funeral.
He had eaten Christmas dinner at the estate.
He once carried Lorenzo, bleeding, out of a warehouse after an ambush.
Now he held a gun.
Lorenzo felt something colder than anger.
Disappointment.
“Dominic.”
Dominic smiled sadly.
“Boss.”
“Where is Lena?”
“Inside.”
“If she’s hurt—”
“She isn’t.”
Adrian shouted from behind Lorenzo.
“Get these off me!”
Dominic ignored him.
Lorenzo noticed.
Interesting.
“You work for Adrian?”
Dominic laughed.
“No.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?”
Dominic looked toward him.
“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?”
Dominic raised the gun.
Marco immediately aimed at him.
“Easy,” Dominic said.
Lorenzo studied the situation.
“Then who do you work for?”
Dominic looked at him.
“Myself.”
The answer made sense.
Traitors rarely served causes.
Usually they served opportunities.
“You used Adrian.”
“He paid well.”
“And now?”
“Now he’s worth more.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“You idiot.”
Dominic smiled.
“You planned to disappear after stealing Moretti money.”
He glanced toward Lorenzo.
“I planned to steal yours.”
Lorenzo almost admired the simplicity.
“Lena.”
Dominic’s smile vanished.
“She’s insurance.”
“You kidnapped a child.”
“I needed leverage.”
“That’s what cowards call children.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Bring Adrian forward.”
Marco did not move.
Dominic raised the weapon.
A second figure appeared inside the chapel holding Lena.
She was crying silently.
Her hands were tied loosely in front of her.
Lorenzo’s entire body went still.
“Mr. Moretti!”
“Lena.”
She tried to run.
The man grabbed her shoulder.
Lorenzo’s eyes hardened.
“Take your hand off her.”
Dominic smiled.
“Exchange first.”
Lorenzo glanced at Marco.
Marco shook his head almost imperceptibly.
Too many unknowns.
At least two armed men.
Possibly more inside.
Lorenzo stepped toward Adrian.
“Move.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You’re giving me to them?”
“Yes.”
“You know they’ll kill me.”
“That sounds like your problem.”
For the first time, Adrian looked afraid.
Lorenzo pushed him forward.
Dominic gestured.
“Keep coming.”
Ten feet.
Eight.
Six.
Lorenzo watched Lena.
She stared at him through tears.
Then something unexpected happened.
She looked down.
At the man holding her.
Then toward the floor.
Three quick glances.
Lorenzo followed.
A loose wooden board.
Lena moved one foot onto it.
She remembered him.
Perhaps from something Sophia had told her.
Or perhaps she was simply brave.
Lorenzo did not know.
But he understood.
She was preparing to move.
“Now,” Dominic said.
Marco released Adrian.
The other man pushed Lena forward.
For one second everyone crossed paths.
Lena stomped.
The loose board snapped upward.
The man behind her stumbled.
Lorenzo lunged.
He grabbed Lena and pulled her behind him.
Gunfire erupted.
Marco tackled Adrian.
Dominic fired once.
A bullet struck stone.
One of Lorenzo’s men returned fire.
Dominic dropped his weapon and collapsed behind a pew.
The second kidnapper ran toward a side door.
Security intercepted him outside.
Then silence returned.
Except Lena crying against Lorenzo’s chest.
He crouched around her.
“You’re okay.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“You came.”
“I promised.”
She began sobbing.
Lorenzo held her.
For several seconds the mafia boss who terrified grown men simply remained on his knees in an abandoned chapel, comforting a child.
Marco approached.
“She’s clear.”
Lorenzo checked Lena’s wrists.
Red marks.
No serious injury.
“Where’s Dominic?”
“Alive.”
“And Adrian?”
Marco looked toward the entrance.
Adrian was gone.
Lorenzo stood.
“What?”
“He ran during the shooting.”
“Find him.”
“We’re already searching.”
Dominic groaned behind the pew.
Lorenzo handed Lena to one of his trusted guards.
“Take her to the vehicle.”
“No!”
She grabbed Lorenzo’s sleeve.
“I’m coming too.”
Lorenzo softened his voice.
“I’ll be right behind you.”
“You promise?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
Then went.
Lorenzo walked toward Dominic.
The traitor had been hit in the shoulder.
Not fatal.
Marco pressed a cloth against the wound.
Dominic laughed weakly.
“You always were lucky.”
Lorenzo crouched.
“Where will Adrian go?”
Dominic smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“Adrian wasn’t the final plan.”
Lorenzo stared at him.
“Who is?”
Dominic coughed.
“Valentina.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
“She’s at the estate.”
“That’s exactly where she needs to be.”
Lorenzo’s heart dropped.
“What did you do?”
Dominic smiled.
“Adrian gave her access to the accounts.”
“We froze them.”
“Not those accounts.”
Lorenzo leaned closer.
“What accounts?”
“The emergency reserves.”
Only Lorenzo and two senior accountants knew about those.
Unless Valentina had obtained information from Adrian.
“How much?”
Dominic whispered.
“Enough to disappear.”
Lorenzo stood.
Marco immediately called the estate.
No answer.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Then Lorenzo’s phone rang.
Valentina.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
Her voice came fast.
“Lorenzo, listen to me.”
“Where are you?”
“At the estate.”
“What happened?”
“Adrian called me.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“How?”
“I don’t know. He said he has Lena.”
“She’s with me.”
Silence.
“Oh, thank God.”
“Valentina.”
“Yes?”
“Adrian escaped.”
Her breathing stopped.
“He’s coming here.”
Lorenzo stared toward the chapel door.
“Get Sophia out.”
“I tried.”
“What?”
“She won’t leave.”
“Why?”
Valentina began crying.
“Because Adrian is already inside.”
Lorenzo’s blood ran cold.
He could hear a distant sound through the phone.
A door closing.
Then Adrian’s voice.
“Valentina.”
The call ended.
Lorenzo ran.
The vehicles tore away from the chapel.
Lena sat beside him wrapped in a blanket.
“Where’s Mama?”
“At home.”
“Is she safe?”
Lorenzo looked through the rain.
“I’m going to make sure.”
Twenty minutes had never felt so long.
When they reached the estate, the main gates stood open.
Two security men were injured but alive.
Lorenzo left Lena with Marco’s most trusted officer and entered with Marco.
The mansion was dark.
Emergency power had been cut.
They moved toward the foyer.
A voice echoed from the dining room.
Adrian.
“You destroyed my family.”
Lorenzo followed it.
Another voice answered.
Valentina.
“No. You destroyed mine.”
Lorenzo stopped outside the door.
Sophia was inside too.
He could hear her.
“Please, just let us go.”
Adrian laughed.
“You should have stayed a maid.”
Lorenzo pushed open the door.
Adrian turned.
He held a gun against Sophia.
Valentina stood several feet away.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You came,” Adrian said.
Lorenzo stepped inside.
“You keep choosing women and children as shields.”
Adrian smiled.
“They work.”
Lorenzo’s gaze went to Sophia.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“Good.”
Adrian pressed the gun closer.
“Stop talking.”
Lorenzo did.
Valentina looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrian laughed.
“She keeps saying that.”
Valentina’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Decision.
Lorenzo recognized it too late.
She moved.
Adrian turned.
Valentina grabbed his gun arm.
The weapon fired.
Sophia screamed.
Lorenzo lunged.
Marco tackled Adrian.
The gun slid across the floor.
Valentina fell.
Lorenzo froze.
Blood spread across the side of her cream blouse.
“Valentina.”
He dropped beside her.
Her eyes remained open.
“Did he… hit Sophia?”
“No.”
Valentina exhaled.
“Good.”
Lorenzo pressed his hand against the wound.
“Stay awake.”
She looked at him.
“I really did love you.”
“Don’t.”
“I know you don’t believe me.”
“Save your strength.”
She smiled faintly.
“You always give orders.”
“Valentina.”
Her eyes fluttered.
“Tell Sophia…”
“You can tell her yourself.”
“I’m sorry.”
Her eyes closed.
Lorenzo shouted for medics.
As they rushed into the room, Sophia stood against the wall shaking.
Marco had Adrian restrained again.
This time three men held him.
Lorenzo looked down at Valentina.
He no longer knew what he felt.
Anger.
Betrayal.
Grief.
Perhaps all of them.
But one thing was clear.
Valentina Ricci had entered his life as part of a lie.
She had nearly destroyed him.
She had terrorized an innocent woman.
And yet, when the moment came, she had thrown herself between Sophia and a bullet.
Whether it was redemption or regret, Lorenzo could not decide.
Not yet.
As paramedics carried Valentina toward the ambulance, Sophia quietly approached him.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Lena?”
“Safe.”
Sophia’s knees nearly gave out from relief.
Lorenzo caught her arm.
“She’s waiting for you.”
Sophia began crying.
This time from relief.
But before she followed the paramedics outside, she looked toward Valentina.
“Will she live?”
Lorenzo watched the ambulance doors close.
May you like
“I don’t know.”
And somewhere beneath the flashing lights, sirens, and rain, Lorenzo realized the final chapter of Valentina Ricci’s story would depend on whether she opened her eyes again.
