Chapter 3 - The Man Who Entered the Nursery

Nathan stared at the security record.
2:14 a.m.
Nursery.
A. CALDWELL.
“How long was he inside?”
“Four minutes.”
“Camera footage?”
“Disabled.”
Maggie remembered that same night.
Oliver had awakened screaming shortly after two.
Vanessa had gone into the nursery and locked the door, insisting she would handle it.
The following morning Oliver refused to let Vanessa hold him.
Nathan demanded the entire security system be copied for police.
Meanwhile, Jonathan discovered that the supposed trust amendment was an old legitimate draft William Whitmore had once considered but never signed.
Someone had added Nathan’s signature and submitted it as current.
Why?
To create legal chaos.
Then came another discovery.
Caldwell Strategic Partners had quietly been purchasing Whitmore Holdings debt.
The strategy became clear.
Destroy Nathan’s reputation.
Question his mental stability.
Create a custody scandal.
Freeze the trust.
Damage Whitmore Holdings.
Then acquire its debt cheaply.
Adrian was trying to dismantle the Whitmore empire.
Detective Reynolds found photographs proving Vanessa and Adrian had been meeting secretly for at least eight months.
Their relationship predated Nathan and Vanessa’s wedding.
Vanessa called Nathan that night.
She demanded twenty million dollars.
Then thirty million.
In return, she promised to disappear.
Nathan agreed to meet her in a public park while Detective Reynolds monitored nearby.
Vanessa arrived wearing sunglasses and a cream coat.
Nathan confronted her about Adrian.
When he mentioned the nursery, her confidence broke.
“I wasn’t supposed to let Adrian go in there.”
“But you did.”
“He said he needed something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happened?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
“He took a sample.”
Nathan froze.
“A sample of what?”
“Oliver.”
“What kind?”
“Hair.”
“Why?”
“He said he needed to confirm something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
Nathan demanded to know what Adrian wanted with Oliver’s DNA.
Vanessa finally admitted something even more frightening.
After obtaining the sample, Adrian stopped talking about taking Nathan’s company.
He started talking about taking Oliver.
“Why?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He believes something about your son.”
“What?”
“He thinks Oliver isn’t a Whitmore.”
Nathan stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
Vanessa explained that Adrian believed Caroline had been hiding something before she died.
Nathan contacted Jonathan immediately.
“Find everything about Caroline’s final six months.”
That evening Jonathan arrived with an old medical file.
Inside was the name of an obstetric specialist Caroline had visited privately.
Dr. Theodore Caldwell.
Adrian’s uncle.
Nathan had never heard of him.
Then he found a handwritten note:
PATIENT REQUESTED PATERNITY CONFIDENTIALITY.
Nathan’s world seemed to stop.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Nathan Whitmore?”
“Who is this?”
“Adrian Caldwell.”
Nathan put the call on speaker.
“Stay away from my son.”
Adrian laughed.
“You keep calling him your son.”
“He is.”
“That depends on what you mean by ‘your.’”
“What do you want?”
“To finish something our fathers started.”
“Leave Oliver out of it.”
“That may not be possible.”
“Why?”
Adrian paused.
“Because Oliver Whitmore may be the only living person who can prove your father stole an entire bloodline.”
May you like
The call ended.
And Nathan realized the secret threatening his son had begun decades before Vanessa entered his life.
