Chapter 5 - A Bride’s Revenge and a Brother’s Betrayal

The meeting took place beneath an old hotel that officially had been closed for renovations for eleven years.
Five families sent representatives.
No phones.
No bodyguards inside the chamber.
No weapons visible above the table.
Arthur Hastings sat at one end.
Dominic sat at the other.
Caroline stood behind her father.
She wore black.
Not silver.
Not white.
Black.
Clara was not supposed to attend.
Dominic had expressly forbidden it.
She came anyway.
When the doors opened and she walked into the room beside Marco, Dominic’s expression turned furious.
“What are you doing here?”
“Making sure nobody tells my story for me.”
“This is not your fight.”
“It became my fight when Caroline hit me.”
Several men around the table exchanged looks.
Caroline smiled.
“How brave.”
Clara looked at her.
“How embarrassing.”
Dominic almost choked on his coffee.
Arthur slammed one palm on the table.
“Enough.”
The room fell silent.
He turned toward the assembled leaders.
“We are here because Dominic Mercer has put personal desire ahead of business.”
Dominic leaned back.
“I’m fascinated already.”
Arthur ignored him.
“He destroyed an alliance worth hundreds of millions because a servant spilled champagne.”
“No,” Dominic said. “I destroyed it because your family was stealing from mine.”
He placed documents on the table.
Copies moved around the room.
Arthur’s expression remained calm.
“You fabricated those.”
Dominic smiled.
“Then sue me.”
A few men laughed.
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
Caroline stepped forward.
“This is about her.”
She pointed at Clara.
“This woman manipulated Dominic from the beginning.”
Clara almost laughed.
“I barely spoke to him for six months.”
“She came into his home intentionally.”
“No.”
“She used her brother’s debt.”
“No.”
“She seduced him.”
Dominic’s chair scraped against the floor.
The sound silenced the room.
Caroline looked at him.
“Did I touch a nerve?”
Dominic stood.
“You can insult me.”
He glanced toward Clara.
“You will not insult her.”
Arthur smiled.
“There.”
He looked around the table.
“That is exactly my point.”
Dominic realized the trap too late.
Every defense of Clara became evidence against him.
Arthur leaned forward.
“A leader who can be controlled emotionally cannot lead.”
Clara looked at Dominic.
He had a choice.
Deny caring about her and preserve his position.
Or admit what everyone already suspected.
Dominic slowly sat.
Then he smiled.
“You’re right about one thing.”
Arthur raised an eyebrow.
“I do care what happens to her.”
Caroline went pale.
Clara stopped breathing.
Dominic continued.
“But you misunderstand what that means.”
He turned toward the five family representatives.
“If protecting someone innocent makes me weak, vote me out.”
Nobody moved.
“If refusing to marry a woman who attacks employees makes me unstable, vote me out.”
Still nothing.
“And if discovering Arthur Hastings stole eleven million dollars from three organizations makes me inconvenient…”
Dominic placed another stack of records on the table.
“…vote very carefully.”
Arthur’s face changed.
Dominic had not only investigated theft from Mercer shipments.
Clara’s discovery in the library had revealed a pattern.
The Hastings family had been stealing from everyone.
One representative opened the folder.
Another swore.
Caroline stared at her father.
“You said Mercer was the only one.”
Arthur ignored her.
Dominic looked around.
“The vote is no longer about me.”
By midnight, Arthur Hastings had lost the support of three families.
By one in the morning, two dock unions had abandoned him.
By sunrise, half his captains were discussing surrender.
But desperate men were dangerous.
Desperate proud men were worse.
Arthur returned home and locked himself in his study.
Caroline followed.
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You used my engagement to cover theft.”
“It was business.”
“I was supposed to marry that man!”
“You were supposed to secure the alliance.”
Caroline stared at her father.
For the first time, she understood something terrible.
Dominic had treated their engagement like business.
Arthur had treated his daughter the same way.
She walked out without another word.
That afternoon Clara found Caroline waiting beside the Mercer estate gates.
Guards surrounded her immediately.
Caroline raised both hands.
“I came alone.”
Clara approached cautiously.
“What do you want?”
“To talk.”
“About another belt?”
Caroline flinched.
The reaction surprised Clara.
“I deserved that.”
Clara studied her.
This was not the same woman from the ballroom.
Caroline looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied back.
No diamonds.
No designer gown.
Just dark trousers and a coat.
“My father is going to kill Dominic.”
Clara’s blood turned cold.
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know that either.”
“Then why come here?”
“Because I know how.”
Caroline reached into her coat slowly.
The guards raised their weapons.
She stopped.
“There’s a flash drive.”
Clara nodded.
One guard retrieved it.
Caroline looked directly at her.
“My father has someone inside Dominic’s security team.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s convenient.”
“I’m telling the truth.”
“Why?”
Caroline laughed bitterly.
“Because my father destroyed my future, my brother used me, and Dominic publicly exposed exactly what kind of person I’ve become.”
She looked at Clara’s cheek.
The bruise had almost faded.
Caroline’s eyes dropped.
“I shouldn’t have done that.”
Clara said nothing.
An apology did not erase pain.
Caroline seemed to understand.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“But Dominic needs that drive.”
Inside the estate, Marco connected the device to an isolated laptop.
Files appeared.
Security schedules.
Vehicle routes.
Floor plans.
Dominic’s calendar.
Someone had been supplying Arthur information for months.
Then Marco opened one final document.
A payment ledger.
His face changed.
Dominic noticed.
“What?”
Marco turned the screen.
Clara stood beside Dominic.
At the top of the list was a name.
Tommy Hayes.
Clara stared.
“No.”
Dominic said nothing.
Payments had been made for six months.
Not to Eddie.
To Tommy.
Clara stepped backward.
“There has to be an explanation.”
Dominic looked at her.
“I hope so.”
They found Tommy at Clara’s mother’s apartment.
He did not run.
He did not deny it.
He sat on the kitchen chair and covered his face.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
Clara stared at him.
“You always have a choice.”
“Leo threatened Mom.”
“You should have told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You sold information about the house where I worked!”
“Nothing dangerous.”
Dominic placed one printed page on the table.
“Tonight’s security rotation.”
Tommy looked at it.
His face drained.
“I didn’t send that.”
Dominic stared.
“Then someone used your account.”
Tommy shook his head.
“My phone was stolen yesterday.”
Clara looked at Dominic.
Dominic was already calling Marco.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Then Dominic understood.
Marco had the flash drive.
Marco knew the security plan.
Marco had left the estate forty minutes ago.
Dominic’s phone rang.
He answered.
Marco’s voice came through.
Calm.
“Sorry, boss.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
Then the line went dead.
At that exact moment, an explosion lit the night sky above the Mercer estate.
Clara turned toward the window.
A column of fire rose beyond the trees.
Dominic stared at the flames.
His oldest friend had betrayed him.
His home was under attack.
May you like
And somewhere inside that burning estate were dozens of employees who had trusted him to keep them safe.
