Chapter 1 - The Door That Was Never Supposed To Open

The first thing I noticed when I stepped through the front door was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
Not the quiet of a home waiting for someone to return.
It was the kind of silence that felt like someone was holding their breath.
I stood there for a moment, still holding my travel bag in one hand, listening to the familiar sounds of the mansion that had always been my safe place.
The old wooden floors.
The distant ticking of the grandfather clock.
The soft hum of the heating system.
Everything looked exactly the same.
And yet something felt wrong.
I had been away for almost three months because of work.
Three months of airports, hotel rooms, business meetings, and late-night phone calls.
Three months of telling myself that when I finally came home, everything would return to normal.
I imagined Perrin running down the stairs.
I imagined him throwing his arms around me.
I imagined hearing his voice saying the words I had missed more than anything.
“Dad, you’re finally home.”
But there was nothing.
No footsteps.
No laughter.
No little boy waiting at the entrance.
I slowly placed my suitcase on the floor.
“Perrin?”
My voice echoed through the enormous hallway.
Nothing.
I smiled slightly, trying to convince myself he was hiding somewhere.
That was something he used to do when he was younger.
He would hide behind curtains or under tables and wait for me to find him.
I walked deeper into the house.
“Come on, buddy. I know you heard me.”
Still nothing.
Then I noticed something strange.
The hallway looked different.
There was a wooden panel on the wall near the old library.
I had walked past that wall thousands of times.
But now, there was a thin gap between the panels.
A shadow.
A line that shouldn’t have been there.
I stepped closer.
Before I could touch it, something happened.
The wall moved.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The wooden panel slid closed.
My entire body froze.
Because from behind that wall…
I heard a sound.
A child crying.
My heart stopped.
Not because I recognized the voice.
Because I prayed I was wrong.
“Perrin?”
I moved closer.
The crying stopped.
For a few seconds, there was only silence.
Then…
“Dad?”
The voice was weak.
Broken.
Almost like the person behind the wall wasn’t sure if they were allowed to speak.
My blood turned cold.
I grabbed the wooden panel.
“Perrin! Answer me!”
No response.
I pulled harder.
The panel barely moved.
Panic took over.
I didn’t care about the expensive wood.
I didn’t care about destroying the wall.
I grabbed the edge with both hands and pulled until my palms burned.
The hidden door cracked.
The track broke.
The entire wooden panel tore away from the wall and crashed onto the marble floor.
Behind it was a small, dark room.
Not a closet.
Not storage.
A room.
A room that had been hidden inside my own house.
And inside…
Was my son.
Perrin was curled up in the corner.
His knees were pulled against his chest.
His clothes were dirty.
His hair was messy.
His face was covered with tears.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
We just stared at each other.
Because he looked at me like I was a dream.
Like he was afraid if he blinked, I would disappear.
Then his lips trembled.
“Dad…”
That one word destroyed me.
I dropped to my knees.
“Perrin…”
I reached for him.
He didn’t hesitate.
He threw himself into my arms.
The moment I held him, I realized something that made my stomach twist.
He was too thin.
Too weak.
A child who had been loved and cared for should never feel that fragile.
His entire body shook against mine.
“I’m here,” I whispered.
“I’m here.”
He buried his face against my shoulder.
“I thought you weren’t coming back.”
My eyes burned.
“What happened?”
He didn’t answer.
He just held onto me tighter.
Then I noticed something.
On the floor behind him was his old stuffed dog.
The toy he had carried everywhere since he was four.
It was torn and covered in dust.
Like it had been trapped inside that room with him.
A thousand questions rushed through my mind.
Who put him here?
How long had he been there?
Why didn’t anyone tell me?
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
I turned around.
And everything inside me went cold.
Standing at the end of the hallway was Rhea.
My fiancée.
The woman who had been living in my home while I traveled.
The woman I trusted.
The woman I believed was taking care of my son.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t running toward Perrin.
She was just standing there.
Watching.
And that was the moment I knew.
She already knew about the room.
She already knew about my son.
She already knew everything.
I stood up slowly, keeping Perrin behind me.
“Rhea…”
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“What is this?” I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Perrin grabbed my hand.
His fingers were shaking.
“Dad…”
I looked down at him.
“What happened?”
His eyes moved toward Rhea.
Then back to me.
And the sentence he whispered next would change everything I thought I knew about my own family.
“Dad…”
His voice cracked.
“Mom never died.”
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
I looked at Rhea.
The color disappeared from her face.
And for the first time since I came home…
She looked truly afraid.
Because whatever secret she had been hiding…
My son had just started telling me the truth.

And I was about to discover that the woman I trusted had built her entire life on a lie.
