Chapter 4 - The Boy Who Wouldn't Break His Promise

Zach disappeared at 6:40 the next morning.

Aurora discovered his empty bed.

“Teddy?”

No answer.

She checked the bathroom.

Nothing.

Then she noticed the folded paper on his pillow.

I promised to save you.

Her blood turned cold.

“MICHAEL!”

He appeared seconds later.

Aurora handed him the note.

The color left his face.

Within minutes the mansion erupted into controlled chaos.

Security footage showed Zach slipping into the garage and hiding inside one of the staff vehicles.

The car had departed forty minutes earlier.

Michael's voice became deadly calm.

“Find that vehicle.”

Aurora stood beside him.

“This is because of me.”

“No.”

“He heard us.”

“He's my son. This is on me.”

The vehicle was found abandoned near Brooklyn.

Zach wasn't inside.

His teddy bear was.

Michael stared at it.

Aurora had never seen fear like that.

Not loud fear.

Not panic.

Something quieter.

The kind that hollowed a person from the inside.

Then Michael's phone rang.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Pier 19. Tonight. Bring the ledger.”

Michael's eyes closed.

“And the boy?”

“Alive.”

“If you touch him—”

“Bring the ledger.”

The call ended.

Aurora whispered, “We're going.”

Michael didn't argue this time.

“No.”

Her anger surged.

“They have Zach!”

“Which means they control the situation they wanted.”

“He went because of me.”

Michael slammed his hand against the desk.

“He went because he's six!”

Aurora froze.

Michael turned away.

When he spoke again, his voice broke.

“I can't lose him.”

Aurora approached slowly.

“You won't.”

“You don't know that.”

“No.”

She stood beside him.

“But you're not doing this alone.”

At sunset, they drove toward Pier 19.

Michael's men followed at a distance.

Aurora carried the original ledger.

Michael carried nothing visible.

“You're unarmed?” she asked.

“No.”

She decided not to ask.

The abandoned pier smelled of salt, rust, and gasoline.

A warehouse door stood open.

Inside, one light burned.

Regina sat tied to a chair.

Zach sat beside her.

“Aurora!”

Aurora nearly ran forward.

Michael caught her arm.

“Wait.”

A man stepped from the shadows.

Late sixties.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

Michael's expression changed.

“Victor Hale.”

The older man smiled.

“Michael.”

Aurora stared.

The ghost from her father's ledger.

Hale looked at her.

“You have Daniel's eyes.”

“Did you kill him?”

Hale sighed.

“Straight to business.”

“Did you?”

Regina began crying.

“Aurora, I'm sorry.”

Aurora looked at her.

“Did you know?”

Regina sobbed.

“I didn't know they would kill him.”

Aurora's knees nearly buckled.

Michael remained beside her.

Hale smiled.

“Regina was useful.”

“Shut up!” Regina screamed.

Aurora stared at the woman who had raised her.

“You took money.”

Regina shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“Seventy-five thousand dollars.”

“I had debts!”

Aurora laughed bitterly.

“You always had debts.”

Regina cried harder.

“I told them where Daniel kept his records. That's all.”

Aurora stopped breathing.

“They said they only wanted the documents.”

“And Dad?”

“I didn't know.”

“But afterward you took their money.”

Regina had no answer.

That silence destroyed the last fragile piece of Aurora's childhood.

Hale extended his hand.

“The ledger.”

Aurora held it tighter.

“Release Zach.”

“Ledger first.”

Michael spoke.

“The boy walks out.”

Hale smiled.

“You aren't negotiating.”

Michael's face became perfectly still.

“You've forgotten who you're talking to.”

“No. You're exactly why I chose the boy.”

Michael's eyes changed.

Aurora understood suddenly why men feared him.

But Hale had made a mistake.

He thought Michael's greatest weakness was his son.

He didn't understand that love could create something stronger than fear.

Aurora raised the ledger.

“You want this?”

Hale looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Then Zach comes to me.”

“Aurora—” Michael warned.

She ignored him.

“One step for every page.”

Hale laughed.

“You're Daniel's daughter, all right.”

He gestured.

A guard untied Zach.

The little boy ran.

Aurora dropped the ledger.

Michael caught Zach and pulled him behind his body.

Everything happened at once.

One of Hale's men reached for the ledger.

Michael's security team entered from both sides.

Sirens erupted outside.

Hale spun.

“What did you do?”

Aurora looked at him.

“I made copies.”

His face changed.

“The FBI already has them.”

For the first time, Victor Hale looked afraid.

“You stupid girl.”

He lunged toward Aurora.

Michael moved faster.

He stepped between them.

Hale was forced backward as armed federal agents entered.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Chaos filled the warehouse.

Regina screamed.

Zach buried his face against Michael.

Aurora stood frozen.

Hale was forced to his knees.

Regina was untied.

As agents led her past Aurora, she stopped.

“Aurora.”

Aurora looked at her.

“I did love your father.”

Aurora's eyes burned.

“You don't get to use love as an excuse for what you did.”

Regina broke down.

Aurora turned away.

Outside, dawn was beginning to lighten the horizon.

Zach sat wrapped in a blanket.

Aurora crouched before him.

“You scared ten years off my life.”

He looked ashamed.

“I wanted to save you.”

She pulled him into her arms.

“You already did.”

“I did?”

“The night you found me.”

Zach hugged her tighter.

Michael stood nearby.

His eyes met Aurora's.

Something had changed between them.

Something neither was ready to name.

Later, after statements had been given and Zach was asleep in the SUV, Aurora stood beside Michael overlooking the river.

“It's over,” she whispered.

“Part of it.”

She looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“Hale didn't kill your father himself.”

Aurora's stomach tightened.

“How do you know?”

“He admitted ordering the intimidation. Not the murder.”

“Then who did?”

Michael hesitated.

“That is what investigators are determining.”

Aurora looked toward the sunrise.

She should have felt relieved.

Instead she felt empty.

“What happens to me now?”

Michael frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“I don't need protection anymore.”

His expression became unreadable.

“You can stay.”

“For Zach?”

Michael looked at her.

“No.”

Aurora's heart stumbled.

“Then why?”

He stepped closer.

“Because I want you to.”

Neither moved.

Then Zach's sleepy voice came from the SUV.

“Dad?”

They separated instantly.

Zach lowered the window.

“Did you kiss my fiancée?”

Aurora nearly choked.

Michael stared at his son.

“No.”

Zach considered this.

“Okay.”

The window rose again.

Aurora started laughing.

Michael did too.

It was the first time she had ever heard him laugh.

And for one impossible moment, standing beside the most feared man she'd ever met, Aurora felt completely safe.

But three days later, a federal investigator arrived at Michael's house carrying the final page recovered from Daniel Bennett's records.

One name was written across the bottom.

And when Michael saw it, every trace of happiness disappeared from his face.

Because the man connected to Daniel Bennett's death wasn't a stranger.

May you like

He was Michael Moretti's own uncle.
