Chapter 2 - The Name Everyone FearedThe stranger’s hand disappeared inside his jacket.

My body froze.

Giovanni didn’t.

He shifted subtly in front of me, blocking my view of the man.

The movement was so smooth that most guests probably never noticed.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

“Giovanni—”

“Please.”

It was the first time I had heard him say that word.

Please.

That frightened me more than the order.

The second man whispered to the first.

Then both stopped.

The hotel manager approached them.

A tense conversation followed.

Thirty seconds later, the strangers turned and left.

No weapon.

No confrontation.

Nothing dramatic.

But Giovanni didn’t relax.

“What just happened?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“You moved in front of me.”

“Habit.”

“What kind of habit?”

He didn’t answer.

Sophia appeared beside us.

“Jess, Mom is having a breakdown.”

“Which kind?”

“The quiet one where she smiles too much.”

“That’s worse.”

Sophia looked at Giovanni.

Then whispered to me, “Do you know who he is yet?”

“Apparently not.”

“You didn’t Google him?”

“I’ve known him twelve minutes.”

Giovanni glanced toward me.

“Fourteen.”

“You’re still counting?”

“Yes.”

Sophia stared between us.

“This is the strangest relationship I have ever seen.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

But Tyler was still watching.

Bianca was still watching.

And Elena Fierro looked like a queen who had just discovered someone had moved a piece on her chessboard without permission.

Giovanni leaned closer.

“My aunt will expect us to leave together.”

“What?”

“You’re my wife.”

“For approximately fourteen minutes.”

“Sixteen.”

“Stop counting.”

That faint almost-smile appeared again.

Then disappeared when Bianca approached.

“You’ve created quite a scene,” she said.

Giovanni’s voice cooled.

“I didn’t realize you were owed an explanation.”

“I was owed honesty.”

“By whom?”

“Your family.”

“That seems like a conversation with my aunt.”

Bianca looked at me.

“And you’re comfortable with this?”

“With what?”

“Being used.”

Giovanni’s jaw tightened.

I should have stepped away.

Instead, I surprised myself.

“I’ve been used before,” I said. “At least this time the man asked first.”

Tyler heard me.

I knew because his face changed.

Bianca’s did too.

Giovanni turned toward me.

There was genuine surprise in his eyes.

Then approval.

“Mrs. Fierro,” he murmured.

“Don’t get comfortable.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

The orchestra resumed.

Slowly, conversation returned.

But the whispers followed us.

Fierro.

Secret marriage.

Jessica Hale.

Nurse.

Child.

My daughter.

That snapped something inside me.

I turned to Giovanni.

“No.”

He frowned.

“No what?”

“Lily.”

“I don’t understand.”

“If we continue this fake marriage for even another hour, people are going to start digging into my life. My daughter is not part of this.”

His expression changed immediately.

“Agreed.”

“You don’t know what I’m agreeing to.”

“Neither do you.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“No photograph. No name. No school. No information about your daughter leaves this room because of me.”

I searched his face.

“You can guarantee that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

His answer was simple.

“Because I can.”

That was when Sophia finally pulled me aside.

“You need to know something.”

“What?”

“Giovanni Fierro owns Fierro Capital.”

I stared blankly.

“That means?”

“Hotels. Real estate. Shipping. Private equity. Half the luxury properties between Chicago and Miami.”

“I work twelve-hour hospital shifts, Sophia. I don’t memorize billionaires.”

“He’s not just rich.”

“What does that mean?”

“He’s… private.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“Dad once said nobody gets into a legal fight with a Fierro unless they’re prepared to lose.”

I looked toward Giovanni.

He stood thirty feet away speaking quietly with Elena.

Even surrounded by guests, he looked completely alone.

“Is he dangerous?”

Sophia hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

That was not reassuring.

“What do you know?”

“That his father died when Giovanni was twenty-three. His uncle took control of the company. Giovanni took it back five years later.”

“How?”

Sophia shrugged.

“Depends which article you read.”

I suddenly wished I had ignored his hand.

Then Tyler approached.

“Can we talk?”

“No.”

“Jess.”

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“You always do this.”

I laughed.

“Do what?”

“Turn everything into a fight.”

“You came over here tonight and told me I threw my life away because I raised the daughter you abandoned.”

“I didn’t abandon Lily.”

“When did you last call her?”

His mouth closed.

“Exactly.”

“I send money.”

“Sometimes.”

“Vanessa is pregnant. Things have been complicated.”

I looked toward his wife.

“No, Tyler. Things were complicated when Lily had pneumonia at two in the morning and I had to decide whether I could afford an ambulance. Things were complicated when daycare increased tuition and my checking account had eighty-three dollars. Things were complicated when she asked why all the other kids had dads at Father’s Day breakfast.”

His face softened.

“Jess—”

“You don’t get to shame me for surviving what you created.”

He looked away.

For once, he had nothing.

Then his gaze returned to Giovanni.

“So what? You married a billionaire?”

“Apparently.”

“You think he cares about you?”

The cruelty returned.

“Men like that don’t marry women like you.”

I stared at him.

“Women like me?”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. Say it.”

His jaw tightened.

Giovanni’s voice came from behind him.

“I’d like to hear it too.”

Tyler turned.

Giovanni stood there with one hand in his pocket.

Relaxed.

Almost casual.

Which somehow made him more intimidating.

Tyler straightened.

“This doesn’t concern you.”

“You’re speaking to my wife.”

“That’s not real.”

My heart jumped.

Giovanni’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?”

Tyler smiled.

“You heard me.”

For one terrifying second, I thought Tyler knew.

Then he added, “Jessica can’t keep secrets. If she’d married someone, Sophia would know.”

Relief came so quickly my knees weakened.

Giovanni smiled faintly.

“My wife is capable of more than you give her credit for.”

Tyler laughed.

“You don’t know her.”

“No,” Giovanni said. “But I know enough to understand abandoning a pregnant woman and then insulting her career does not make you an authority on her value.”

Tyler went pale.

I stared at Giovanni.

He had remembered every word.

Every humiliation.

Tyler looked at me.

“You told him?”

“I didn’t have to.”

“You were loud.”

Tyler’s embarrassment turned to anger.

“This is pathetic.”

He left.

Giovanni watched him go.

“You okay?”

The question was unexpectedly gentle.

I nodded.

“I’m used to him.”

“You shouldn’t be.”

Four words.

That was all.

But they reached somewhere inside me that I had spent years keeping sealed.

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message from my best friend, Maya.

Lily refuses to sleep until she knows you got cake.

I smiled.

Giovanni noticed.

“Your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Everything okay?”

“She’s staging a protest.”

“What does she want?”

“Wedding cake.”

“A serious cause.”

“She has principles.”

He nodded gravely.

“I respect that.”

For another second, I forgot he was a stranger.

Then Elena approached.

“Giovanni. Jessica. We should talk.”

Those words carried no invitation.

She led us toward a private lounge adjoining the ballroom.

Bianca followed.

I stopped.

“Why is she coming?”

Elena answered.

“Because until ten minutes ago, Bianca was expected to become part of this family.”

“Expected by whom?” Giovanni asked.

Elena ignored him.

Inside the lounge, she closed the door.

The noise of the wedding vanished.

Elena faced me.

“How much is he paying you?”

I blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“Elena,” Giovanni warned.

She raised one hand.

“I’m asking your wife.”

I looked at Giovanni.

Then back at her.

“He isn’t paying me.”

Bianca laughed softly.

“Then you’re doing this for free?”

I felt heat rise in my face.

Giovanni stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

But I was done letting wealthy people decide what I was.

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I turned to Elena.

“You want to know why I’m here?”

“Yes.”

“Because your nephew saw someone being humiliated and offered his hand.”

Elena’s expression shifted.

I continued.

“Maybe that seems suspicious in your world. In mine, sometimes kindness is just kindness.”

Giovanni stared at me.

Elena did too.

Then she asked the question I had been afraid of.

“When did you marry?”

“Three months ago.”

“Where?”

“Lake Como.”

“When exactly?”

My mind went blank again.

Giovanni answered.

“May seventeenth.”

Elena looked at me.

“What did you wear?”

Seriously?

“A dress.”

Bianca smiled.

“What kind?”

I turned toward Giovanni.

“What did I wear, darling?”

His eyes flashed with amusement.

“Ivory.”

“Designer?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Giovanni looked directly at me.

“Because Jessica hates paying for labels when the fabric matters more.”

My breath caught.

He had seen my dress.

My shoes.

He wasn’t mocking me.

He had turned the very thing Tyler used against me into something dignified.

Elena studied both of us.

Then asked, “Who witnessed it?”

Giovanni paused.

That pause was too long.

Bianca saw it.

“So there was no witness?”

“There were two.”

“Names?”

He gave her a cold look.

“You’re not cross-examining my wife.”

Bianca smiled.

“No. But someone will.”

The door opened.

One of Giovanni’s men stepped inside.

He handed Giovanni a phone.

“Sir.”

Giovanni read something on the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?” Elena asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he handed the phone to her.

She went pale.

Bianca stepped forward.

“What?”

Elena looked at Giovanni.

“Already?”

He nodded.

I felt unease crawl across my skin.

“What happened?”

Giovanni turned the screen toward me.

A photograph showed us dancing beneath the chandeliers.

The headline beneath it read:

CHICAGO BILLIONAIRE GIOVANNI FIERRO REVEALS SECRET WIFE AT SOCIETY WEDDING.

My stomach dropped.

“It’s online?”

“Two sites so far.”

“You promised Lily would stay out of this.”

“She will.”

“You can’t know that.”

His phone buzzed again.

Then mine did.

Unknown number.

Another.

Another.

My mother called from the ballroom.

Sophia texted.

Maya texted.

Then a notification appeared from the hospital.

Someone had already posted the story in a staff group chat.

I looked up at Giovanni.

“What have I done?”

His expression hardened.

“I can fix this.”

“How?”

“First, we leave.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“You can’t stay here.”

“Why?”

Another man entered the lounge.

He whispered something to Giovanni.

This time Giovanni’s face went completely still.

“What?” I demanded.

He looked at me.

“Someone identified your apartment building.”

Every sound disappeared from my head.

Lily.

I grabbed my purse.

“I have to go.”

Giovanni caught my wrist gently.

“Jessica.”

“My daughter is there.”

“I know.”

“Let go.”

“I already sent security.”

My blood turned cold.

“You did what?”

“To protect her.”

“You sent strangers to my child?”

“I sent people I trust.”

“I don’t trust you!”

The words filled the room.

Giovanni released me immediately.

Something flickered across his face.

Not anger.

Pain.

Maybe.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed again.

“What?” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“Your friend and Lily are safe.”

I exhaled.

Then he continued.

“But there’s someone outside your building.”

“Press?”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“How do you know?”

His answer chilled me.

May you like

“Because the man outside isn’t carrying a camera.”

And suddenly the fake marriage stopped feeling like a joke.
