Chapter 3 - The Mystery Inside The Forgotten Box

For the first time in days, Sunny slept peacefully.
No struggling.
No trying to stand.
No desperate attempts to reach the clinic door.
She simply rested.
And that alone told me something important.
Sunny had never been fighting against us.
She had been fighting for someone else.
Shadow was placed in the recovery area beside her, wrapped in a soft blanket with a small heating pad underneath. His tiny body was still weak, but every hour brought a little more strength back into him.
The two kittens were different in almost every way.
Sunny was pale and gentle, with cream-colored fur and a quiet determination that amazed everyone.
Shadow was smaller, darker, and more cautious. He spent most of his time pressed against Sunny’s side, as if afraid that if he moved too far away, she would disappear again.
But Sunny never moved away.
Even while recovering from her own injuries, she always made space for him.
It was something I had never seen before.
Animals understand things we sometimes forget.
They understand trust.
They understand family.
They understand that sometimes survival is not about being the strongest.
Sometimes survival is about knowing someone is waiting for you.
Two days after we rescued Shadow, Daniel returned to the clinic.
I was checking Sunny’s eye when I saw him standing near the entrance.
But this time, his expression was different.
The first day he arrived, he looked worried.
Now he looked troubled.
“Is everything okay?” I asked.
He looked down at something in his hands.
“I found this.”
He placed a small cardboard box on the counter.
It was old.
Damaged from weather.
The edges were torn, and dirt covered the surface.
“Where did you find it?”
“Near the storage building.”
I looked at the box.
“Near where you found Sunny?”
He nodded.
“I went back after you all left. I wanted to check the area one more time.”
His fingers moved nervously around the box.
“It was buried under some old blankets.”
I glanced toward the recovery room.
Sunny was awake.
The moment Daniel stepped inside, she lifted her head.
But then her attention shifted to the box.
I noticed.
“Sunny knows that box.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You think so?”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I carefully opened the lid.
Inside was an old towel.
Not the blue one Daniel had carried Sunny in.
A different piece of fabric.
Underneath it was a small plastic bag.
Inside the bag were three things.
A worn-out collar.
A faded photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Nobody spoke.
The clinic suddenly felt completely silent.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed a cat.
An adult female cat.
She had the same cream-colored fur as Sunny.
And beside her were two tiny kittens.
One cream.
One gray.
Sunny and Shadow.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“Oh no…”
“What?”
He pointed at the picture.
“That’s their mother.”
I looked closer.
The cat in the photo looked healthy.
Happy.
Her eyes were calm.
She was curled around her two kittens.
A family.
Before everything went wrong.
Then I picked up the note.
The handwriting was messy.
Almost rushed.
It only contained a few sentences.
"Please help them. I tried everything. I couldn't keep them safe anymore."
I read it again.
Then again.
My stomach tightened.
Someone had not simply abandoned these kittens.
Someone had been trying to save them.
But from what?
We spent the next several hours trying to understand what happened.
Daniel told us everything he knew.
The storage buildings belonged to his family.
They had been empty for months.
Nobody should have been there.
Nobody should have left animals behind.
But the evidence was clear.
Someone had hidden Sunny and Shadow there.
Someone had placed them carefully under the boards.
Someone had left food nearby.
But something had gone wrong.
“They weren’t trapped there accidentally,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“The boards.”
He took out his phone.
He showed us pictures from the storage area.
At first glance, it looked like a collapsed pile.
But after looking closer, we noticed something.
The boards had been arranged.
Not randomly.
Someone had created a small shelter.
A hiding place.
A place where two kittens could survive.
Until they were found.
The question was…
Who had put them there?
And why had they disappeared?
That evening, Sunny became restless again.
At first, I thought she was in pain.
But then I saw her looking at the photograph.
Daniel had left the box open near her recovery area.
Sunny stared at the picture of her mother.
Her small paw slowly touched the edge of the photograph.
I felt something tighten in my chest.
She remembered.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to know that picture meant something.
I sat beside her.
“Do you know who she is?”
Sunny blinked slowly.
Then she looked toward Shadow.
The little gray kitten was sleeping.
Safe.
For the first time, I wondered if Sunny remembered something terrifying.
Something that happened before Daniel found her.
Something that made her believe she was responsible for protecting her brother.
The next morning, we received a phone call.
A woman was asking about two missing kittens.
At first, I thought it was impossible.
There were thousands of missing animals every year.
But then she said something that made me freeze.
“I left them near the storage building because I thought someone would find them.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?”
“My name is Emily.”
I looked toward Sunny and Shadow.
“Can you tell me what happened?”
There was silence.
Then the woman started crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words changed the entire conversation.
“I’m so sorry.”
Emily arrived at the clinic that afternoon.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had carried guilt for a very long time.
When she entered the recovery room, Sunny immediately reacted.
Her ears lifted.
Her body became still.
Then slowly…
She walked toward her.
Everyone watched.
Emily covered her mouth.
“That’s her.”
Her voice broke.
“That’s Sunny.”
She knelt down.
“I thought I lost you forever.”
Sunny stood there.
Not afraid.
Not angry.
Just watching.
As if she was trying to understand why this familiar person had disappeared.
Emily explained everything.
She had been caring for a stray mother cat near her home.
The cat gave birth to Sunny and Shadow.
But then the mother became sick.
Very sick.
Emily tried to help.
She spent everything she had on medicine and food.
But she was struggling financially.
One night, the area where they lived became dangerous.
Construction crews were clearing nearby land.
She knew the kittens would not survive if they stayed there.
So she moved them to the storage building, where she believed they would be protected.
She planned to return the next morning.
But that night…
Everything changed.
A storm destroyed the road.
Her car broke down.
She was unable to reach them.
By the time she returned, the kittens were gone.
She searched everywhere.
But she never found them.
Until now.
Daniel listened quietly.
Then he asked the question everyone was thinking.
“Why didn’t you put your contact information with them?”
Emily looked down.
“I did.”
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
“The note.”
She looked at the box.
“That was supposed to be found.”
I looked at the handwritten message again.
Please help them. I tried everything. I couldn't keep them safe anymore.
Suddenly, the words felt different.
It was not a goodbye.
It was a desperate plea.
A mother’s final attempt to protect her babies.
That night, Sunny and Shadow slept beside each other.
But something had changed.
They were no longer lost.
They had found their way back to the people who cared about them.
Or so we thought.
Because the next morning, Emily arrived with another piece of information.
Something she had never told anyone.
Something that explained why she was so afraid to lose Sunny and Shadow.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“There’s something else you need to know about their mother…”
May you like
And when she showed me the picture she had been hiding…
I realized Sunny and Shadow’s story was far from over.
