Chapter 2 - The Man They Feared

Marcus Reed had always known how to make a room quiet without raising his voice.

When we were children, I thought it was because he was older than me.

When we became adults, I understood the truth.

Marcus watched people.

He listened.

He remembered.

And when he finally spoke, he rarely needed to repeat himself.

Victor stepped between us.

“You need to leave.”

Marcus looked at him.

Then at the broken phone on the floor.

Then at me.

“Move.”

Victor laughed.

It sounded forced.

“This is my house.”

“No,” Raul said.

Everyone turned.

Raul’s voice had lost its confidence.

“Victor. Don’t.”

Victor stared at his father.

“You know him?”

Marcus walked farther into the room.

The men behind him remained near the entrance.

No one threatened anyone.

They didn’t need to.

Their presence alone transformed the atmosphere.

Helena rose from her chair.

“Marcus, whatever you think happened—”

“I haven’t told you what I think happened.”

Helena stopped.

Marcus looked at Nora.

“Are you recording?”

Nora immediately lowered her phone.

“No.”

Marcus held out his hand.

“Then you won’t mind giving me the phone.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You don’t get to demand anything.”

Marcus looked at me again.

“Emily, can you stand?”

I tried.

My knees trembled.

Marcus was beside me before I could fall.

He crouched carefully.

“Don’t move.”

The softness in his voice nearly broke me.

For years I had imagined what I would say if I ever saw him again.

I had imagined anger.

Questions.

Accusations.

Instead, I whispered, “You came.”

His jaw tightened.

“You asked.”

Those two words brought tears to my eyes.

Victor scoffed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Marcus slowly stood.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

I looked at Nora.

Her phone.

The recording.

Marcus followed my gaze.

Nora tucked the device behind her back.

Victor noticed.

His face changed.

“Nora.”

She shook her head.

“I didn’t—”

“You recorded this?”

Raul exploded from his chair.

“What is wrong with you?”

Nora looked stunned.

For the first time, the Hale family was no longer united against me.

They were turning on one another.

Marcus took out his own phone.

“An ambulance is already outside.”

Victor’s head snapped toward him.

“You called an ambulance?”

“And the police.”

Helena went pale.

“You had no right.”

Marcus stared at her.

“She’s pregnant.”

Helena opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Paramedics entered moments later.

The instant I saw their uniforms, something inside me collapsed.

Until then, survival had kept me upright.

Now I began shaking uncontrollably.

One paramedic knelt beside me.

“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”

“Emily Hale.”

“How far along are you?”

“Twenty-six weeks.”

“Do you have abdominal pain?”

“A little.”

Victor moved closer.

“She fainted. She’s dramatic when she’s tired.”

Marcus turned toward him.

The paramedic raised a hand.

“Sir, please give us space.”

Victor stared at me.

It wasn’t concern in his eyes.

It was warning.

Even now.

Even surrounded by strangers.

He expected my silence.

I looked at the paramedic.

“My husband hurt me.”

The room became completely still.

Victor’s face hardened.

“She’s confused.”

“No,” I said.

My voice shook.

But it came again.

Stronger.

“I’m not.”

Nora looked down.

Raul sat heavily in his chair.

Helena whispered, “Ungrateful.”

Marcus heard her.

He turned.

“What did you say?”

Helena lifted her chin.

“She has lived in luxury for years. Victor gave her everything.”

Marcus’s expression remained calm.

“That is not an answer.”

“She provokes him.”

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Helena.

“No one earns this.”

The paramedics placed me onto a stretcher.

As they wheeled me toward the entrance, I saw police vehicles outside.

Victor’s confidence finally cracked.

He grabbed Raul’s arm.

“Do something.”

Raul whispered, “I can’t.”

I had never heard him say those words.

At the hospital, the doctors examined me immediately.

Those hours remain blurred in my memory.

Machines.

Questions.

A nurse holding my hand.

Marcus pacing behind a glass partition.

The baby’s heartbeat finally filling the room.

Strong.

Steady.

Alive.

I covered my face and cried.

The doctor told me the baby appeared stable but wanted to keep me under observation.

I nodded.

Marcus entered after the medical team left.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

He looked older.

Not old.

Just changed.

There were lines near his eyes I didn’t remember.

“You look like Dad,” I whispered.

Marcus smiled sadly.

“You look like Mom.”

That almost broke me again.

“I thought you left.”

“I know.”

“You never called.”

“I did.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Hundreds of times.”

My heart stopped.

Marcus sat beside the bed.

“After you started dating Victor, Raul came to see me.”

I remembered.

Marcus had hated Victor from the beginning.

He called him charming in the way dangerous men learned to be charming.

We argued.

Then one day Marcus disappeared.

His number changed.

His apartment was empty.

I received one message.

You chose Victor. Don’t contact me again.

I had cried for weeks.

Marcus reached into his jacket and placed an old printed photograph on the blanket.

It showed him standing outside a courthouse.

“Raul threatened my company. He threatened our aunt. He had people following me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“He gave me a choice. Leave your life completely or watch everyone around us suffer.”

“But the message—”

“Wasn’t from me.”

My stomach turned.

“Victor?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Yet.

That word mattered.

“You’ve been investigating them?”

“For three years.”

I stared at him.

Marcus leaned closer.

“The Hales didn’t become wealthy through clean business, Emily.”

I looked toward the door.

“Marcus—”

“Financial intimidation. Fraud. Shell companies. Bribery. People pressured into signing over property. Lawsuits that disappeared. Witnesses who suddenly changed their stories.”

I thought of Raul’s confidence.

The way people in restaurants greeted him.

The way Victor always said their family had “friends everywhere.”

Marcus continued.

“I couldn’t prove enough before.”

“Before today?”

His eyes met mine.

“Nora recorded what happened.”

I closed my eyes.

The humiliation of that phone pointed toward me returned.

“She recorded everything.”

“That video can protect you.”

I swallowed.

“What if she deletes it?”

Marcus looked toward the hospital window.

“She already tried.”

My eyes opened.

“Tried?”

“One of the officers stopped her from wiping the phone after she admitted there was a recording.”

I stared at him.

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“And that isn’t the only thing they found.”

“What do you mean?”

He hesitated.

“When police searched Victor after your statement, they found a second phone.”

I felt cold.

“There are messages on it.”

“What messages?”

“Some about you.”

My breathing changed.

Marcus took my hand.

“Emily, how long has Victor been controlling where you go?”

I looked away.

“Years.”

“Your bank accounts?”

“Yes.”

“Your friends?”

I nodded.

“Your medical appointments?”

Another nod.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“I thought he was protective.”

“And later?”

“I knew he wasn’t.”

“Why didn’t you call me sooner?”

My throat burned.

“Because I thought you hated me.”

Marcus lowered his head.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I whispered, “There’s something else.”

He looked up.

“Victor made me sign documents last month.”

“What documents?”

“I don’t know. He told me they were estate papers for the baby.”

Marcus went very still.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“Raul’s office.”

“Who was there?”

“Victor. Raul. Their attorney.”

Marcus stood.

“Emily, listen carefully. Did you read them?”

“They wouldn’t let me.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Victor covered most of the pages. He told me where to sign.”

Marcus took out his phone.

I grabbed his wrist.

“What is it?”

He looked at me.

“The Hales transferred several major assets two weeks ago.”

My heart began pounding.

“Into whose name?”

“That’s what I couldn’t figure out.”

He paused.

“Until now.”

The room seemed smaller.

“Mine?”

Marcus nodded.

“If they moved illegal assets into your name, they weren’t protecting the baby.”

I understood before he finished.

“They were preparing someone to blame.”

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?”

His expression hardened.

“How much?”

Silence.

Then he looked at me.

“All of it?”

He ended the call.

“Marcus?”

He walked toward the door.

“Police just recovered Nora’s video.”

I waited.

“And?”

His eyes returned to mine.

“There’s something in the background they weren’t supposed to hear.”

“What?”

“A conversation between Raul and Victor before you entered the kitchen.”

My stomach tightened.

Marcus spoke slowly.

“They were discussing those documents.”

I gripped the blanket.

“What did they say?”

Marcus’s answer erased the last illusion I had about my marriage.

May you like

“They said once the investigation started, everything would lead back to you.”

And according to the recording, Victor had known for months exactly how they planned to make his pregnant wife take the fall.
