Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind Sophie’s Lost Dream

Maria came home three days later.
Antonio doubled security.
Sophie hated it.
Two men outside nursing school.
A driver waiting after class.
Security near her apartment.
But she hated the alternative more.
Victor Sanz remained unseen.
Antonio refused to retaliate recklessly.
That surprised Sophie.
The Antonio Russo she had heard about in whispered stories supposedly solved problems with intimidation.
The man she now knew spent hours with attorneys, investigators, and law enforcement contacts documenting Victor’s harassment.
“You’re surprised,” Antonio said one evening.
They stood in Maria’s kitchen.
“About what?”
“That I’m not doing what the newspapers say men like me do.”
Sophie looked at him.
“Are the newspapers wrong?”
Antonio considered the question.
“Not always.”
That honesty mattered.
“I have made choices I’m not proud of,” he said. “I grew up in a world where power meant survival.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m trying to make sure the people after me inherit something cleaner.”
Sophie smiled faintly.
“People after you?”
“My employees.”
“Sure.”
Antonio raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“Maria told me she wants grandchildren.”
Antonio nearly choked on his coffee.
From the next room Maria shouted, “I can hear you.”
Sophie burst out laughing.
Antonio shook his head.
For several minutes, danger disappeared.
Then Sophie’s phone rang.
Her nursing school.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Antonio watched.
“Yes, I understand.”
She ended the call.
“What happened?”
Sophie stared at the screen.
“Someone paid my remaining tuition.”
Antonio froze.
Sophie looked at him.
“You.”
“No.”
“Antonio.”
“It wasn’t me.”
“Maria?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she promised me she wouldn’t.”
Sophie frowned.
“Then who?”
The answer came the following day.
Sophie was summoned to the financial office.
An administrator handed her an envelope.
“The donor asked that you receive this.”
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Sophie recognized the name at the bottom.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
She sat down.
Years earlier, during her grandmother’s illness, Sophie had spent countless nights in a public hospital. One evening, she had found an elderly man confused and alone near the elevators.
Sophie had stayed with him until his family arrived.
She had forgotten.
He hadn’t.
Samuel Carter was now chairman of a charitable foundation supporting nursing students who had left school to care for family members.
Maria had contacted him.
Not to give Sophie money.
To tell him her story.
Sophie drove directly to the Russo house.
Maria was in the garden.
“You promised.”
“I promised not to pay your tuition.”
“You found someone else.”
“I made a phone call.”
Sophie tried to stay angry.
Failed.
Tears filled her eyes.
Maria stood.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Sophie hugged her.
“I don’t know how to accept things like this.”
“Learn.”
“I spent years doing everything alone.”
“I know.”
Maria held her tighter.
“That does not mean you must spend the rest of your life that way.”
Antonio watched from the terrace.
Later, Sophie found him there.
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
“You people are impossible.”
“I’ve heard.”
Sophie leaned against the railing.
“Eight months ago, I thought nursing was over.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m going to graduate.”
Antonio looked at her.
“I never doubted it.”
Sophie turned.
They were standing closer than she realized.
Neither moved.
“Antonio…”
He raised one hand slowly, giving her plenty of time to step away.
She didn’t.
His fingers brushed a loose strand of hair from her cheek.
Then Maria’s voice came through the open window.
“If you two need another six months, I can arrange refreshments.”
Sophie jumped backward.
Antonio closed his eyes.
“Mama.”
Maria disappeared.
Sophie laughed.
Then Antonio laughed too.
It was the first time she had heard it fully.
Warm.
Human.
Dangerously attractive.
The moment almost became something more.
Almost.
Antonio’s security chief appeared at the terrace door.
“Mr. Russo.”
Antonio saw his expression.
“What?”
“We found Sanz.”
Sophie’s smile disappeared.
“Where?”
“He’s been arrested.”
Antonio stared.
“For what?”
“Extortion, stalking, financial crimes. Federal case.”
Sophie exhaled.
“Is it over?”
The security chief hesitated.
Antonio noticed.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“He wasn’t working alone.”
Silence.
“Who?”
The man looked toward Sophie.
Antonio’s voice hardened.
“Say it.”
“We traced several payments.”
He handed Antonio a folder.
Antonio opened it.
His face changed.
Sophie had never seen that expression before.
Betrayal.
“Who is it?” she whispered.
Antonio closed the folder.
“A man I’ve trusted for twenty-two years.”
And when he finally showed Sophie the photograph inside, she recognized the man immediately.
He had been standing behind Antonio the very first night they met at Bellarosa.
May you like
One of his own security men.
