Chapter 3 - The Secret Recording That Changed Nathaniel Cross Forever

The next morning, the Cross estate felt like a completely different place.

The same marble floors reflected the same sunlight.

The same tall windows looked over the same gardens.

The same walls held the same paintings worth more than most people’s homes.

But something had changed.

The silence.

For years, I had known the quiet of that house.

The peaceful quiet.

The kind that came from expensive furniture, thick carpets, and people who had enough money to avoid unnecessary noise.

But that morning was different.

It was the quiet after a storm.

The kind where everyone is waiting to see what remains standing.

I sat at the small kitchen table with Lily beside me.

She was coloring.

A simple activity.

Something normal.

Something I desperately wanted her to have.

Normal.

She had spent most of her life surrounded by things she could not touch.

Rooms she could not enter.

Conversations she was not supposed to hear.

People who smiled at her but never truly saw her.

I watched her carefully draw a house with three people standing outside.

A mother.

A little girl.

And someone else.

“Who is that?”

I asked softly.

Lily looked down at her paper.

“That’s Mr. Nathaniel.”

My heart tightened.

“Why is he there?”

She shrugged.

“Because he was nice.”

Four words.

But they carried so much.

Children don’t remember expensive gifts.

They remember kindness.

A person who kneels down.

A person who listens.

A person who makes them feel important.

Before I could say anything, there was a quiet knock on the kitchen door.

I turned.

Nathaniel stood there.

No tuxedo.

No business suit.

Just a dark sweater and simple trousers.

For the first time since I met him, he looked less like a billionaire.

More like a tired man.

“Can I come in?”

I nodded.

Lily immediately smiled.

“Mr. Nathaniel.”

Something softened in his face.

“Good morning, Lily.”

He walked over and looked at her drawing.

“That’s a beautiful house.”

“It has a garden.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“Does it?”

“Yes.”

She pointed at the paper.

“Mom likes flowers.”

Nathaniel looked at me.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Because we both understood what that drawing represented.

A life Lily wished she had.

A place where nobody told her she didn’t belong.

Nathaniel pulled out a chair.

“I need to talk to you.”

My stomach tightened.

“About the folder?”

He nodded.

“The folder.”

He placed it on the table.

The same red folder from the ballroom.

Except now it looked heavier.

More dangerous.

“There’s something you need to know.”

I looked at Lily.

She was focused on her coloring.

Still, I lowered my voice.

“What did you find?”

Nathaniel opened the folder.

The first documents were already familiar.

Emails.

Payments.

Reports.

But then he removed something else.

A small digital recorder.

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

“The reason Vanessa was so desperate to keep this hidden.”

He placed it on the table.

“She recorded conversations.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“With who?”

Nathaniel looked at me.

“With people inside my company.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that have to do with Lily?”

“At first, I thought it was unrelated.”

He paused.

“Then I listened.”

Nathaniel pressed play.

A woman’s voice filled the kitchen.

Vanessa.

Even without seeing her, I recognized the confidence.

The arrogance.

The certainty that nobody would ever challenge her.

The recording began.

“I’m telling you, the merger will fail if Nathaniel keeps believing he can run everything himself.”

A man responded.

“So what’s your plan?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“My plan is simple. Make him depend on me.”

My hands tightened.

Nathaniel’s expression remained still.

But I saw his eyes change.

The recording continued.

“I’ll become the person he trusts most. Once we’re married, I’ll have access to everything.”

The man asked:

“And the company?”

Vanessa answered:

“Nathaniel is emotional. He thinks loyalty matters. People like him always have weaknesses.”

A pause.

Then:

“His weakness is wanting to save everyone.”

My eyes moved toward Nathaniel.

Because suddenly I understood.

Lily was not just a child Vanessa disliked.

Lily was evidence.

Evidence of Nathaniel’s compassion.

Evidence that he cared about people beneath his social status.

Vanessa hated that.

Because kindness was the one thing she could not manipulate.

The recording continued.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“The housekeeper and her daughter are perfect examples.”

My breath stopped.

Nathaniel leaned forward.

His face became colder.

Vanessa continued:

“If Elena leaves, nobody will question it. She’s just staff.”

The man laughed.

“And the kid?”

Vanessa replied:

“The child will adapt.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

Lily continued coloring.

Completely unaware that adults had once discussed her like she was a problem to remove.

Nathaniel looked away.

His jaw tightened.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.”

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I should have seen it.”

I shook my head.

“People who manipulate others are good at hiding.”

Nathaniel looked down.

“I invited her into my home.”

His voice was quiet.

“I was going to marry her.”

I understood something then.

Nathaniel wasn’t just angry.

He was grieving.

Not because he lost Vanessa.

Because he lost the person he believed Vanessa was.

Later that morning, Nathaniel called an emergency meeting with his legal team.

The news spread quickly.

By afternoon, every executive connected to Cross Meridian knew.

The wedding was canceled.

The investigation had begun.

Vanessa attempted to control the situation.

She released a statement claiming she was being misunderstood.

She hired lawyers.

She contacted reporters.

She tried to turn herself into the victim.

But this time, she had underestimated one thing.

Evidence.

And Nathaniel Cross had enough of it.

Three days later, the estate changed forever.

The staff gathered in the main hall.

Everyone was nervous.

Many expected Nathaniel to make a business announcement.

Instead, he looked at the employees and said:

“I owe every person here an apology.”

Nobody moved.

“I built a company based on respect. But inside my own home, someone was treated as if respect did not apply to them.”

His eyes moved toward Lily.

She stood beside me.

Holding my hand.

“I failed to see what was happening.”

The room remained silent.

Then Nathaniel did something nobody expected.

He apologized directly to my daughter.

He lowered himself to her height.

“Lily.”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry nobody protected you sooner.”

Her little face became serious.

Then she asked:

“Are you still my friend?”

Nathaniel smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She nodded.

“Because I saved you a drawing.”

For the first time in days…

Nathaniel laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind that came from relief.

But while the estate began healing…

another question remained.

What would happen to Elena and Lily now?

Because after everything that happened…

Nathaniel Cross had a decision to make.

A decision that would change three lives forever.

Would he simply return to being their employer?

May you like

Or would he become something much more important?

Someone Lily had already chosen to trust.
