Chapter 5 - The Photograph That Revealed Nathaniel’s Forgotten Secret

The photograph was old.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not damaged.

Not destroyed.

Just old.

The edges were slightly worn, like someone had held it many times over the years.

Nathaniel stood beside me in his office, staring at the image in complete silence.

I had never seen him like that before.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Not even confused.

Just…

Lost.

The man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without hesitation was staring at a small photograph as if it had taken him back to a moment he had spent years trying to forget.

“Who is she?”

I asked quietly.

Nathaniel didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the woman standing beside him in the picture.

She was younger.

Much younger.

Maybe twenty years old.

She had long brown hair, a gentle smile, and a familiar warmth in her expression.

She wasn’t wearing expensive clothing.

No jewelry.

No designer dress.

Just a simple sweater and jeans.

But the way Nathaniel looked at her told me everything.

He knew her.

“I haven’t seen this picture in seventeen years.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

I looked at him.

“Who is she?”

Nathaniel finally placed the photograph on the desk.

“Her name was Clara.”

The way he said her name told me it mattered.

“Was?”

He nodded slowly.

“She was my best friend.”

I waited.

Because I knew there was more.

Nathaniel walked toward the window.

Outside, the Cross estate gardens were quiet.

The same gardens where Lily now spent hours running around.

The same place where she had finally started feeling safe.

“She was the only person who knew me before the money.”

I listened.

“Before Cross Meridian became what it is today, I was just a young man trying to prove myself.”

Nathaniel smiled faintly.

“I had a small office. No investors. No reputation. No power.”

He looked back at the photograph.

“Everyone saw what I became.”

A pause.

“But Clara knew who I was.”

I understood.

Sometimes the people who knew us before success are the ones who understand us the most.

“What happened to her?”

Nathaniel’s expression changed.

“She disappeared.”

The room became quiet.

“Disappeared?”

He nodded.

“One day she was there. The next day she was gone.”

“Did you look for her?”

His eyes lowered.

“For years.”

I felt something heavy in his answer.

“But you never found her?”

“No.”

Nathaniel picked up the photograph again.

“Until now.”

I looked at the picture carefully.

Then I noticed something.

A small detail.

Something I almost missed.

There was a child in the background.

A little girl.

Maybe four years old.

Standing near Clara.

My heart skipped.

“Who is that?”

Nathaniel looked.

And suddenly his entire expression changed.

Because he saw it too.

The little girl.

The same dark curls.

The same eyes.

The same small smile.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.”

My voice became quiet.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

He just stared.

Then he looked at me.

“Because Clara told me she never had children.”

The room felt colder.

I looked back at the photograph.

The little girl was standing beside Clara.

Holding her hand.

A child who looked strangely familiar.

A child who was about the same age Lily had been when she first came to the Cross estate.

My mind began connecting pieces.

But I didn’t want to say it.

Because the thought was too impossible.

Too painful.

“Nathaniel…”

He looked at me.

“What?”

I hesitated.

Then:

“Is there any chance…”

I stopped.

Because even saying it felt wrong.

But Nathaniel understood.

His face changed.

“No.”

He said it immediately.

“No.”

But his voice lacked confidence.

For the first time, Nathaniel Cross looked afraid.

Not afraid of losing money.

Not afraid of losing power.

Afraid of discovering something about his own life that he had never known.

That night, Nathaniel barely slept.

Neither did I.

The next morning, he hired a private investigator.

Not because he wanted answers quickly.

Because he needed the truth.

Three days passed.

Three days of waiting.

Three days of wondering why someone had sent that photograph now.

Then the investigator called.

Nathaniel answered in his office.

I was there.

Because after everything that happened, he no longer wanted secrets between us.

I watched his expression change while he listened.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then sadness.

Finally…

Shock.

He ended the call.

“What did they find?”

He didn’t answer.

He handed me a document.

My hands shook as I read.

The report was about Clara.

She had not disappeared.

She had been hiding.

For years.

She had changed her name.

Moved to another state.

Started a new life.

And she had a daughter.

A daughter named…

My eyes stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Lily?”

Nathaniel nodded slowly.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He took a breath.

“Not Lily.”

I felt relief.

Then confusion.

“Then who?”

He pointed to the document.

The name was written there.

Sophie.

A daughter Clara had protected for seventeen years.

A daughter connected to a secret Nathaniel never knew existed.

But that wasn’t the biggest discovery.

The biggest discovery was the final note from the investigator.

The reason Clara disappeared.

The reason she hid her daughter.

The reason she never contacted Nathaniel.

At the bottom of the report was one sentence:

“Clara believed Nathaniel Cross was responsible for destroying her life.”

I looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Nathaniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

But someone did.

And that someone had just sent us the photograph.

A second envelope arrived that afternoon.

Inside was another message.

Only five words.

“Ask your father what happened.”

Nathaniel froze.

Because his father had been dead for twelve years.

And whatever secret existed…

it had started long before Vanessa.

Long before Lily.

Long before the gala.

The truth was buried inside the Cross family.

And now it was finally coming back.
