Chapter 1 - Five Minutes Before Forever

For eighteen months, Emily Carter had imagined the moment the ballroom doors would open.
She had imagined the music first.
A string quartet would soften its final note, hundreds of guests would rise from their chairs, and the enormous carved doors of Chicago's Whitmore Grand Hotel would slowly swing apart. Beyond them, under thousands of white flowers and warm golden lights, Daniel Whitmore would be waiting.
Her Daniel.
The man she had loved for three years.
The man she believed she would grow old beside.
Emily had imagined every detail so many times that the wedding almost felt like a memory instead of something that had not happened yet.
But nowhere in those dreams had there been a crying child.
“Emily?”
Her maid of honor, Sophie, stood behind her adjusting the long veil that flowed over the back of Emily's lace gown.
“You're shaking.”
Emily smiled at her reflection.
“I'm getting married in six minutes. I think I'm allowed to shake.”
Sophie laughed.
“You've been planning this thing like a military operation for a year and a half. Nothing is going wrong today.”
Emily turned slightly toward the tall mirror.
She hardly recognized herself.
Her dark brown hair had been arranged into a loose elegant updo. Tiny diamonds hung from her ears. Her wedding dress fit perfectly, its delicate lace catching the light whenever she moved.
Beyond the bridal suite, faint music floated through the hotel.
Hundreds of people were waiting downstairs.
Daniel was waiting.
Everything was perfect.
Then Emily heard it.
A child crying.
Very softly.
She looked toward the door.
“Did you hear that?”
Sophie paused.
“Hear what?”
Emily listened.
Nothing.
One of the bridesmaids laughed from across the room.
“Probably somebody's kid having a meltdown. There are like thirty children downstairs.”
Emily nodded.
Of course.
That made sense.
She turned back to the mirror.
Her mother entered from the adjoining room carrying Emily's bouquet.
“There she is.”
Her mother's eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Oh, Emily.”
“Mom, don't start.”
“I can't help it.”
Her mother hugged her carefully.
“You look beautiful.”
Emily closed her eyes for a moment.
Everything felt suddenly real.
The wedding.
The marriage.
The life waiting after today.
Then she heard the crying again.
This time it was louder.
Emily pulled away from her mother.
There was something about the sound that bothered her.
It wasn't the irritated cry of a tired child.
It sounded frightened.
“Emily?”
She put the bouquet down.
“I'll be right back.”
Sophie stared at her.
“Where are you going?”
“I just want to check something.”
“You're walking down the aisle in five minutes.”
“Then I have five minutes.”
Before anyone could stop her, Emily opened the bridal suite door.
The main corridor outside was empty.
Guests had already moved toward the ballroom.
She listened.
Another sound came from somewhere farther down the hallway.
A muffled sob.
Emily followed it.
Her heels clicked against the marble.
The hotel's public corridors were magnificent—gold chandeliers, dark mahogany walls, enormous framed paintings—but beyond a pair of service doors, the elegance changed abruptly.
The hallway became narrower.
Laundry carts stood against the walls.
Shelves held neatly folded sheets and towels.
The distant wedding music became faint.
Emily stopped.
“Hello?”
No answer.
Then she heard a child's voice.
Three quiet words.
“Please don't hurt me.”
Emily froze.
Every instinct inside her changed.
The wedding disappeared from her thoughts.
“Hello?”
She walked faster.
“Sweetheart?”
Another sob.
Emily followed the sound toward a partially open storage-room door.
She pushed it gently.
A little girl was sitting on the floor.
She couldn't have been older than seven.
Her long brown hair was tangled around her tear-streaked face. She wore what had once been a beautiful white formal dress, but dirt marked the hem and one shoulder.
One shoe was missing.
Against her chest she clutched a small beige stuffed rabbit so tightly that its worn fabric wrinkled between her fingers.
Emily's heart sank.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
The girl looked terrified.
Emily immediately lowered herself to the floor despite the expensive wedding gown pooling around her.
“It's okay.”
The child backed farther against the wall.
Emily raised both hands slightly.
“I won't come closer.”
The girl watched her.
Emily kept her voice quiet.
“My name is Emily.”
No response.
“What's your name?”
After several seconds, the child whispered, “Lily.”
“Hi, Lily.”
Emily gave her the smallest possible smile.
“Are you hurt?”
Lily looked away.
Emily noticed a faint reddish mark around one of the girl's wrists.
Her stomach tightened.
“Where are your parents?”
Lily's expression changed instantly.
Fear.
Pure unmistakable fear.
She shook her head.
“You don't have to tell me.”
Emily waited.
“Is there someone here I can call for you?”
Lily suddenly crawled forward.
Before Emily could react, the girl grabbed her hand.
Her fingers were freezing.
“Please don't tell him you found me.”
Emily's heart began pounding.
“Tell who?”
Lily looked toward the hallway.
“Him.”
Footsteps echoed somewhere outside.
Lily's entire body stiffened.
“No.”
She scrambled behind Emily.
“No, no, no.”
Emily turned.
A man appeared at the far end of the corridor.
Tall.
Dark suit.
Perfectly calm.
She recognized him almost immediately.
Charles Mercer.
A respected real-estate investor.
Daniel's longtime business associate.
And a guest at their wedding.
Emily had met him several times at dinners and charity events.
Daniel had always spoken highly of him.
“Emily?”
Charles looked genuinely surprised.
“What are you doing back here?”
Emily slowly stood.
Lily remained behind her wedding gown.
“I heard crying.”
Charles's gaze shifted downward.
His expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
“Lily.”
The little girl's fingers tightened around Emily's dress.
Charles sighed.
“Thank God.”
He approached.
“We've been looking everywhere for her.”
Emily didn't move.
“She's your daughter?”
“Yes.”
Charles gave an embarrassed smile.
“I'm sorry you've gotten dragged into this. Lily has some behavioral issues. She runs away when she gets overwhelmed.”
Behind Emily, Lily was trembling.
Charles extended his hand.
“Come on, sweetheart.”
Lily made a frightened sound.
She hid farther behind Emily.
Emily looked down.
The terror on the child's face was impossible to mistake.
Charles's smile tightened.
“Lily.”
Emily stepped sideways, blocking his path.
“Give her a minute.”
Charles stopped.
“Of course.”
His voice remained polite.
But his eyes hardened.
Emily crouched again.
“Lily?”
The child looked at her.
“Do you want to go with him?”
Lily shook her head violently.
Charles exhaled.
“She does this.”
Emily stood again.
“What exactly does she do?”
“She makes up stories.”
“What stories?”
Charles hesitated.
For the first time, the calmness cracked.
“Emily, respectfully, you're about to get married. You don't need to involve yourself in a family issue.”
Emily stared at him.
A sound came from behind her.
Almost too quiet to hear.
“Please.”
Emily looked down.
Lily was gripping her stuffed rabbit.
The child's knuckles had turned white.
Emily made her decision.
“She stays here.”
Charles blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“Until hotel security gets here.”
His expression cooled.
“Emily.”
“I said she stays.”
A second set of footsteps rushed toward them.
Daniel appeared.
He was still wearing his tuxedo.
For half a second, Emily felt relief.
“Daniel.”
He stared at the scene.
Emily expected him to ask whether Lily was safe.
Instead, his first words were:
“What are you doing?”
Emily frowned.
“I found this little girl hiding in the storage room.”
Daniel looked at Charles.
Something passed between them.
So quickly Emily nearly missed it.
Recognition.
Concern.
Perhaps fear.
Charles spoke first.
“It's a misunderstanding.”
Daniel looked back at Emily.
“The entire ballroom is waiting.”
“Daniel, Lily is terrified.”
“I understand.”
“No, I don't think you do.”
He lowered his voice.
“Emily, hundreds of people are waiting. The ceremony starts in five minutes.”
She stared at him.
There was something deeply wrong with his reaction.
“This child asked me not to let him take her.”
Daniel glanced toward Lily.
“She belongs with her father.”
Lily suddenly whispered, “He's not my father.”
The hallway went silent.
Charles's jaw tightened.
Emily felt ice move through her veins.
Daniel looked sharply at Charles.
Then at Lily.
“Lily,” Charles said quietly, “that's enough.”
Emily moved between them again.
Daniel reached for her arm.
“Emily. Come back to the ballroom.”
She pulled away.
“No.”
His voice became firmer.
“This isn't our problem.”
Emily looked at the man she was supposed to marry.
Three years together.
Hundreds of dinners.
Plans for children.
A house they had discussed buying.
And suddenly she felt as though she were looking at a stranger.
“A terrified seven-year-old child is everyone's problem.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Don't turn this into something it isn't.”
“Then explain what it is.”
He didn't answer.
Emily pulled out her phone.
Charles moved slightly.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling hotel security.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Emily.”
“And I'm asking them to contact the authorities responsible for child protection.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Please don't do that.”
Something in those five words frightened her more than Charles's presence.
Emily slowly lowered the phone.
“Why?”
Daniel said nothing.
Lily peeked around Emily's wedding dress.
She stared at Daniel.
And then her face changed.
Recognition.
Her breathing stopped.
Emily felt Lily's hand grip hers.
“Emily.”
The girl's voice trembled.
“I know him.”
Emily looked down.
“Who?”
Lily raised one shaking finger.
She pointed directly at Daniel.
“I've seen him before.”
Daniel went completely still.
Emily felt the floor beneath her world begin to disappear.
She looked from Lily to her fiancé.
“Daniel?”
He opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Lily whispered something that made Emily forget every guest waiting downstairs.
“He came to the house.”
And suddenly, five minutes before her wedding, Emily realized that the frightened child holding her hand might know a secret about the man she was about to marry.
May you like
A secret Daniel desperately did not want revealed.
And in the next few minutes, Emily would discover that Lily's fear had not brought her into that hallway by accident.
