Chapter 4 - The Groom's Real Plan

At 1:17 in the morning, police reached the address Daniel had sent.

Emily wasn't allowed to go.

She waited in the hotel conference room with her mother, Naomi, and Lily.

Every minute felt like ten.

The hotel had become eerily silent.

Flowers still covered the ballroom downstairs.

Half-empty champagne glasses remained on tables.

A wedding cake no one had cut stood beneath decorative lights.

Emily didn't want to see any of it.

At 2:06 a.m., Detective Hale returned.

Emily stood immediately.

“Did you find her?”

He looked exhausted.

“Yes.”

Lily woke at the sound.

“Mommy?”

Emily looked at Hale.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

Lily began crying before anyone said another word.

Emily gathered her into her arms.

“She's alive.”

“Where is she?”

“At a medical facility.”

Lily pulled away.

“I want her.”

“You'll see her.”

Naomi crouched beside her.

“We need doctors to make sure she's okay first.”

Lily nodded through tears.

Emily looked at Hale.

“What happened to Sarah?”

“She'd been confined in a private residence outside the city.”

“By Charles?”

“We're still collecting evidence.”

“Was she hurt?”

“She's weak. Dehydrated. There are signs she was restrained.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Lily didn't hear that part.

Thank God.

“Daniel knew.”

Hale nodded.

“He knew where she was.”

“So why didn't he tell anyone?”

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

Emily looked at the wedding ring still sitting inside a velvet box somewhere downstairs.

A lifetime ago, she had wanted Daniel's last name.

Now she wanted answers.

“Let me speak with him.”

Hale frowned.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Daniel was being held in another hotel conference room while investigators determined how deeply he was involved.

When Emily entered, he stood.

For a moment, neither spoke.

He looked exactly like the groom she'd expected to marry.

Perfect tuxedo.

Perfect hair.

Boutonniere still pinned to his jacket.

But his tie was loosened and fear had settled into his eyes.

“Emily.”

She stayed near the door.

“Sarah is alive.”

Relief crossed his face.

“They found her?”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat.

“Thank God.”

Emily stared at him.

“You knew where she was.”

His silence answered.

“How long?”

“A few days.”

“Days?”

“I couldn't just call police.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles had people watching her.”

“So?”

“He told me if anyone went to authorities, Sarah would disappear permanently.”

Emily's jaw tightened.

“And you believed him?”

“I knew enough to believe him.”

“What exactly did you know?”

Daniel looked toward the mirrored wall.

“Charles's businesses aren't legitimate.”

“I figured that out.”

“I didn't know when we first partnered.”

“When did you find out?”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“And you stayed.”

“It wasn't that simple.”

“Of course.”

“It wasn't.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Charles had records connecting my company to his transactions. If I walked away, he could destroy me.”

Emily stared at him.

“Your reputation?”

“My company. Hundreds of employees.”

“That's what you're worried about?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It started that way.”

Emily felt disgust rise.

“And Sarah?”

“She discovered everything.”

“So Charles kidnapped her.”

“I didn't know until later.”

“But you knew about Lily.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“Yes.”

The word hurt more than Emily expected.

“Why was she at our wedding?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Charles brought her.”

“Why?”

“He was moving her.”

“Moving her where?”

“I don't know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“And why did he bring a kidnapped child to the largest social event in Chicago?”

Daniel said nothing.

She understood.

“Because of you.”

“No.”

“Don't lie.”

“Emily—”

“Because he trusted you.”

Silence.

“You were involved.”

“I never hurt Lily.”

“That wasn't the question.”

Daniel stood.

“I made mistakes.”

Emily laughed.

“Mistakes?”

“I was trying to get out.”

“You knew a woman had been kidnapped.”

“I was trying to help her.”

“By keeping quiet?”

“You don't understand Charles.”

“No. Apparently I don't understand you.”

Daniel looked wounded.

Emily hated him for looking wounded.

She continued.

“Why did Lily recognize you?”

“I visited the house.”

“How many times?”

“Twice.”

“Did you see Sarah?”

“Yes.”

Emily felt physically sick.

“You saw a kidnapped woman and walked away.”

“I was trying to gain Charles's trust.”

“You could have called police.”

“And gotten Sarah killed.”

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

Daniel's voice cracked for the first time.

“You think I slept the last few months? You think I didn't hate myself?”

Emily stared.

“I don't know what you feel anymore.”

Daniel took a breath.

“There is something else.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

“The wedding mattered to Charles.”

Emily frowned.

“How?”

“He invested through several companies connected to assets I would gain access to after our marriage.”

Emily's skin went cold.

“What assets?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Your family's trust.”

Emily didn't understand.

“My trust?”

“Your grandfather's investment trust.”

Emily stared at him.

Her grandfather had left her shares in a private investment fund worth tens of millions.

She rarely thought about it.

The assets were controlled through a family structure until marriage or age thirty-five.

“Daniel.”

She whispered his name.

“Did you marry me for money?”

“No.”

Too fast.

Emily stepped backward.

“Oh my God.”

“No. Emily, listen.”

“Did Charles want access to my trust?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“Not when we started dating.”

“When?”

Daniel's silence told her.

“How long?”

“Eight months.”

Emily's eyes filled.

Eight months.

Wedding planning.

The venue.

The invitations.

The honeymoon.

Every time Daniel told her he loved her.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

“You kept planning the wedding.”

“I loved you.”

“Don't.”

“I did.”

“Don't say that.”

“I thought I could fix everything before today.”

“How?”

“I was gathering evidence.”

Emily stared at him.

“Where?”

Daniel looked away.

“Against Charles.”

“Where is it?”

He hesitated.

“In my office.”

“Have you given it to police?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things in there that implicate me too.”

There it was.

The truth.

Daniel hadn't remained silent only to protect Sarah.

He'd also been protecting himself.

Emily felt oddly calm.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Daniel couldn't answer.

“After the wedding?”

Silence.

Emily laughed quietly.

“You were going to marry me first.”

“I thought if I could secure your trust assets temporarily—”

She slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

Daniel didn't move.

Emily's hand shook.

“You were going to use my family's money.”

“To trap Charles.”

“You were going to use me.”

“I was trying to stop him.”

“You were using me.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I loved you.”

Emily backed toward the door.

“You loved what I could solve for you.”

“No.”

She opened the door.

“Emily, wait.”

She turned.

“Lily trusted me after knowing me for five minutes.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“And in those five minutes, she told me more truth than you did in three years.”

She walked out.

Detective Hale waited nearby.

Emily wiped her face.

“Daniel has evidence in his office.”

Hale immediately straightened.

“What kind?”

“Ask him.”

She walked back toward Lily.

The child was awake.

“Emily?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still getting married?”

Emily looked at her ruined wedding dress.

Then she looked toward the empty ballroom.

“No.”

Lily seemed sad.

“Because of me?”

Emily crouched.

“No.”

She took Lily's hand.

“Because you showed me something I needed to see.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

Later that morning, authorities searched Daniel's office.

What they found changed everything.

Financial records.

Recorded conversations.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

And a private file labeled CARTER.

Inside it were detailed documents about Emily's family trust, projected wedding date, and the exact moment Daniel would gain legal financial privileges as her husband.

But there was something else.

A recording.

Daniel's voice.

Charles's voice.

And one sentence that made Emily realize their wedding had never been just a wedding.

Charles said:

“Once she signs after the ceremony, we're done.”

Daniel answered:

“And if she asks questions?”

Charles laughed.

“She won't.”

Emily listened from Detective Hale's laptop.

Her hands became cold.

Because she knew exactly what document Charles meant.

That morning, before the ceremony, Daniel's attorney had delivered a stack of “routine marital financial paperwork” for Emily to sign after the reception.

She had trusted Daniel.

She hadn't read it carefully.

If Lily hadn't cried in that hallway, Emily would have walked down the aisle.

She would have married him.

And hours later, she might have signed away control of millions of dollars.

Lily hadn't interrupted Emily's wedding.

May you like

She had saved her.

But the next discovery would reveal that Sarah Brooks had been trying to save Emily too—and that was the reason Charles had made her disappear.
