Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Was Never My Escape

I stared at the sentence on the screen.

“Michael, Khloe never loved you the way you thought she did.”

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was reading.

Not because the words were complicated.

Because some part of me refused to accept them.

Khloe.

The woman who had spent two weeks telling me I was special.

The woman who held my hand under Caribbean sunsets.

The woman who looked at me like I was the only person in the world.

She didn't love me?

I felt anger rising inside me.

Not at Eleanor.

At first, I didn't even know who I was angry with.

Maybe myself.

Maybe the entire situation.

Maybe the possibility that the life I had destroyed my marriage for was never real.

I continued reading.

The document wasn't long.

But every sentence felt heavier than the one before.

Michael,

I know you probably believe Khloe cared about you.

I know you probably think she understood you in a way I didn't.

But I need you to ask yourself one question.

When was the last time she cared about what you needed instead of what you could give her?

I stopped.

Because I didn't have an answer.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to say Eleanor was wrong.

But my mind immediately started replaying memories.

The expensive restaurants.

The designer bags.

The luxury hotels.

The private flights.

Every moment with Khloe involved something I provided.

Money.

Status.

Attention.

I remembered the first time we met.

It was at a charity event.

She had walked directly toward me.

She already knew who I was.

She knew my company.

She knew my success.

She knew everything about the public version of Michael Carter.

But did she know the real me?

The man who stayed awake worrying about his employees?

The man who secretly doubted himself?

The man who cried the night his father died?

The man Eleanor had spent fourteen years knowing?

No.

Khloe never knew that person.

Eleanor continued.

I didn't want to investigate her.

I didn't want to become someone who searched for reasons to hate another woman.

But after I saw the pictures, I needed to understand what was happening.

Not for me.

For our son.

My eyes moved faster.

I needed answers.

I needed to know what Eleanor discovered.

The next page contained screenshots.

Messages.

Emails.

Photos.

My hands became cold.

The first screenshot was between Khloe and someone named Daniel.

I recognized the name.

Daniel was one of Khloe's friends.

A wealthy investor she had mentioned several times.

I never paid attention.

I should have.

The message was simple.

“He really believes he's leaving everything for me.”

My heart stopped.

I stared.

Then I read the next line.

“Men like Michael are easy. They don't want love. They want to feel admired.”

My chest tightened.

Another message appeared.

“Once he announces the divorce, he'll have to protect his image. That's when I'll get what I want.”

I couldn't breathe.

My eyes moved down.

Another screenshot.

“He has money, connections, and a company. He won't walk away empty-handed.”

I closed the laptop.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Almost like I was trying to convince myself.

“No.”

But the evidence was there.

I opened it again.

More messages.

More proof.

Khloe wasn't planning a future with me.

She was planning a future using me.

I remembered every time she told me:

“You deserve someone who appreciates you.”

“You work too hard.”

“You should finally choose yourself.”

I thought those words meant love.

Now they sounded different.

They sounded like permission.

Permission to abandon everything.

Permission to become selfish.

Permission to destroy the one person who truly loved me.

I looked around the empty maternity room.

And suddenly, I felt completely ashamed.

Because Eleanor had known.

She had known everything.

And she still protected me.

She could have exposed Khloe publicly.

She could have destroyed my reputation.

She could have sent those messages to my company.

She could have made sure everyone knew what kind of man I was.

But she didn't.

She quietly left.

She protected my dignity even after I broke her heart.

A knock came from the door.

I quickly closed the laptop.

The nurse stepped inside.

“Mr. Carter?”

I looked up.

“Yes?”

She held a small folder.

“There is something else your wife left.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

The nurse walked closer.

“She asked me to give this to you only after you watched the video.”

I accepted the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

I turned it over.

And froze.

It was a picture of Eleanor holding our son.

Taken in the hospital.

She looked exhausted.

But she was smiling.

A real smile.

The kind I hadn't seen in years.

On the back of the photo, she had written:

“He waited for you.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Because my son had waited.

My wife had waited.

And I had chosen not to be there.

I held the photo against my chest.

For the first time in years, I stopped thinking about what I wanted.

I stopped thinking about my reputation.

My company.

My comfort.

I only thought about one thing.

My family.

I stood up quickly.

“I need to find them.”

The nurse looked at me.

“Mr. Carter…”

I turned.

Her expression changed.

She looked hesitant.

“What?”

She took a breath.

“Your wife asked me not to give you her location.”

My heart dropped.

“Why?”

The nurse looked down.

“Because she wanted to know if you were looking for them because you were afraid of losing them…”

A pause.

“Or because you finally understood their value.”

Those words followed me.

Because deep down...

I knew she was right.

I had spent years assuming Eleanor would always be there.

I treated her love like something permanent.

Something guaranteed.

Something I could return to whenever I was ready.

But love doesn't work that way.

Even the strongest hearts eventually become tired.

I left the hospital carrying the photo and flash drive.

For the first time in weeks, I ignored every call.

I ignored business.

I ignored Khloe.

I drove home.

Not to pack.

Not to escape.

To face what I had done.

When I opened the front door of my house, everything felt different.

The silence was unbearable.

The living room still had the baby furniture Eleanor had chosen.

A small blanket sat folded on the couch.

A tiny stuffed animal rested near the crib.

Everything was ready.

Except me.

I walked upstairs.

Then I saw something on the bedroom table.

An envelope.

A real one.

Not digital.

My name was written on it.

Eleanor's handwriting.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only three sentences.

Michael,

If you truly want to find us, don't look for Eleanor.

Find the man you promised me you would become.

I read it again.

And again.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Khloe.

For the first time since meeting her...

I didn't feel excitement.

I felt nothing.

I answered.

“Michael!”

Her voice sounded worried.

“Where have you been? I've been calling you all day.”

I remained silent.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Please tell me you didn't let Eleanor manipulate you.”

I slowly looked at the picture of my son in my hand.

And I realized something.

Khloe still didn't understand.

She thought this was about another woman.

She thought this was a competition.

She didn't know I wasn't choosing between two women anymore.

I was choosing between the man I had become...

And the man I needed to become.

“I saw the messages.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then her voice changed.

“What messages?”

I closed my eyes.

Because her reaction answered everything.

“You know exactly what messages.”

Another pause.

Then Khloe whispered:

“Michael... listen to me.”

Her tone was no longer sweet.

No longer gentle.

It was nervous.

“You don't understand what happened.”

I looked out the window.

The city lights blurred through my tears.

“Then explain.”

She was quiet.

Too quiet.

And finally she said:

“There is something about Eleanor you don't know.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Khloe took a deep breath.

And the next words changed the entire story.

“Your wife didn't leave because of your affair.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Then why?”

Khloe whispered:

“Because she discovered the truth about your company.”

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

My company?

What did Eleanor know?

And why had she never told me?

May you like

For the first time...

I wondered if the story I thought I knew was only the beginning.
