Chapter 5 - The Secret My Wife Protected From Me

I stood in the middle of my empty house, holding the phone against my ear.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Not because I didn't have questions.
Because I had too many.
My company.
My wife.
My affair.
My son.
Everything I thought I understood was suddenly falling apart.
“What did you just say?”
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Khloe remained silent.
I could hear her breathing.
The confidence she always carried was gone.
“Michael…”
“No.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.”
Another pause.
“You said Eleanor knew something about my company.”
“Yes.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Khloe sighed.
“I don't know everything.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I'm serious.”
Her voice became defensive.
“She found something.”
“What did she find?”
Silence.
Then she answered.
“She found financial records.”
I froze.
“What financial records?”
“Your company accounts. Investments. Transfers.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
My company was everything.
I had built it from nothing.
Every late night.
Every sacrifice.
Every decision.
It was the reason I believed I deserved freedom.
The reason I convinced myself I had earned the right to make selfish choices.
“What does that have to do with Eleanor leaving?”
Khloe hesitated.
And that hesitation scared me more than any answer.
“Michael…”
“Tell me.”
“She was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Khloe lowered her voice.
“That you were being betrayed.”
The words hit me strangely.
Betrayed?
I almost laughed.
Because betrayal was the one thing I thought I understood.
I was the betrayer.
I was the husband who left.
I was the man who lied.
But now Khloe was telling me there was something else happening.
Something I didn't know about.
“Who?”
I asked.
“Who was betraying me?”
Khloe didn't answer.
And that told me everything.
“Khloe.”
“I think…”
She stopped.
“Say it.”
“I think someone inside your company was stealing from you.”
My entire body went still.
For years, I trusted the people around me.
My executives.
My partners.
The people who helped me grow the company.
I believed loyalty was something I had earned.
But suddenly, another possibility appeared.
Maybe while I was chasing another life...
Someone had been destroying the one I built.
“When did Eleanor find out?”
Khloe answered quietly.
“Before you left.”
My heart dropped.
Before I left.
I thought back.
The week before the Caribbean trip.
Eleanor had been acting differently.
Quiet.
Distracted.
I remembered asking her what was wrong.
She smiled.
“Nothing.”
I thought she was upset about the baby.
I thought she was stressed.
I thought she was being distant.
But she wasn't angry.
She was investigating.
She was trying to protect me.
While I was planning a vacation with another woman.
The realization made me feel sick.
“She knew?”
Khloe didn't answer.
“She knew someone was hurting me?”
“Yes.”
“And she didn't tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Khloe became quiet again.
Then she said:
“Because she didn't trust how you would react.”
That hurt.
Because I knew exactly why.
The old me would have exploded.
I would have blamed everyone.
I would have ignored the evidence.
I would have focused on protecting my pride instead of solving the problem.
Eleanor knew me better than I knew myself.
She knew my weaknesses.
And even after everything...
She protected me.
I sat down slowly.
“Where is she?”
Khloe didn't answer.
“Where is Eleanor?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I'm not.”
Her voice became sharper.
“Michael, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“She didn't leave because she wanted revenge.”
I closed my eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
Khloe sounded almost frustrated.
“You don't.”
A pause.
“She left because she was scared.”
The word stayed in the air.
Scared.
Not angry.
Not jealous.
Not trying to punish me.
Scared.
“Scared of me?”
“No.”
Khloe's voice lowered.
“Scared that if something happened to you, your son would grow up without a father.”
I felt my throat tighten.
I looked at the picture of my son.
A tiny baby.
A child who had done nothing wrong.
A child who deserved better than a father who chose a fantasy over reality.
I ended the call.
I needed answers.
Not from Khloe.
From the only person who had been protecting me all along.
My wife.
I searched through every place Eleanor might have left information.
The house.
The office.
Old documents.
Anything.
Then I remembered something.
A small wooden box in our bedroom closet.
Eleanor kept important things there.
Letters.
Photos.
Memories.
I opened it.
Inside were years of our life together.
Our first apartment keys.
Our wedding invitation.
Photos from vacations.
Birthday cards.
Then I found a sealed envelope.
On the front were four words:
"Open when he understands."
My hands trembled.
He.
Not Michael.
Not husband.
He.
Our son.
Or maybe the man I needed to become.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Michael,
If you found this, then I hope you finally understand.
I never wanted to leave you.
I wanted our family.
I wanted our son to know the man I fell in love with.
But I couldn't protect you while watching you destroy yourself.
I stopped.
Destroy yourself.
That was exactly what I had done.
The night before you left, I discovered something about your company.
Someone has been moving money through accounts connected to your business.
I don't know who yet.
But I know one thing.
They are waiting for you to be distracted.
My heart started racing.
Distracted.
I looked around the empty house.
Then I remembered.
The timing.
The affair.
The trip.
Someone knew I would be gone.
Someone knew I wouldn't be paying attention.
Someone knew my priorities had changed.
I wanted to tell you.
I really did.
But every time I tried, I saw how excited you were about leaving.
I saw how happy you looked.
And I realized something painful.
You were already halfway gone.
I lowered the letter.
Because she was right.
I had been physically home.
But emotionally?
I had already left.
So I made a decision.
I took copies of everything.
I protected the evidence.
And I protected our son.
My eyes widened.
Evidence.
Where was it?
I quickly turned the page.
The final sentence made my heart stop.
Michael, if you truly want to find us, start by looking at the person who encouraged you to leave.
I stared at the words.
The person who encouraged me to leave.
Only one person came to mind.
Khloe.
But then another thought appeared.
What if Khloe wasn't acting alone?
What if the affair wasn't just an affair?
What if someone wanted me distracted for a reason?
I grabbed my phone.
Before I could call anyone, a message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Stop searching for Eleanor. You don't know what you're looking for."
My blood turned cold.
A second message appeared.
"You already lost your family. Don't lose your company too."
I stared at the screen.
Someone was watching me.
Someone knew I had found the truth.
And for the first time...
I realized Eleanor hadn't disappeared.
She had hidden.
May you like
Because she knew something dangerous.
Something that could destroy all of us.
