Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind Her Tears

Vanessa disappeared from the ballroom less than five minutes after Adrian canceled the wedding.

Almost no one noticed.

Everyone was watching Adrian.

He had lifted Mia into his arms because the child’s legs had finally given out.

Mia still refused to surrender Ellie.

So Adrian carried both girls.

One arm beneath Mia.

The other supporting Ellie’s back.

His tuxedo shirt became wet with tears.

He didn’t care.

For a man whose public image had been built on control, the sight was shocking.

Adrian Cole was crying.

Quietly.

Not dramatically.

But enough that Daniel saw him wipe his cheek before they entered the private elevator leading to the underground garage.

Doctors from the hotel medical team examined the children.

Dehydration.

Exhaustion.

Mild malnutrition.

Nothing immediately life-threatening.

Those words should have relieved him.

They didn’t.

A seven-year-old had survived three days caring for a toddler.

Alone.

While he had been choosing champagne.

Reviewing floral arrangements.

Arguing with the wedding planner about guest seating.

The thought made him sick.

His driver raced toward St. Catherine’s Hospital while Adrian sat in the back seat holding Mia.

Ellie had finally fallen asleep against his chest.

Mia watched him carefully.

As if expecting him to disappear.

“Why didn’t your mother call me?” he asked quietly.

Mia looked out the window.

“She said she couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“She said sometimes grown-ups make mistakes because they’re scared.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Did she ever talk about me?”

Mia nodded.

His chest tightened.

“What did she say?”

“That you liked pancakes.”

A laugh escaped him before he could stop it.

Rachel used to tease him because he burned almost everything except pancakes.

“What else?”

“She said you hated olives.”

True.

“And that you always pretended you weren’t afraid of thunderstorms.”

Adrian stared at her.

Mia smiled for the first time.

Tiny.

Fragile.

But unmistakable.

Rachel had remembered.

After seven years, she had remembered everything.

“Did she tell you I was your father?”

Mia shook her head.

“Not until last week.”

“Why last week?”

“Because she got sick.”

The smile vanished.

“She thought she might not wake up one day.”

Adrian looked away.

His eyes burned.

When they reached the hospital, security cleared a private entrance.

Daniel stayed close.

Mia refused to let go of Adrian’s hand.

They reached the intensive care floor.

A physician met them outside Room 814.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Dr. Patel.”

“How is Rachel?”

The physician studied him.

“You’re family?”

Adrian looked at Mia.

“I may be the father of her children.”

Dr. Patel’s expression softened.

“She’s stable, but she suffered significant trauma.”

“What kind?”

“A head injury. Two fractured ribs. Severe dehydration.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Was she attacked?”

“We notified police.”

Mia pressed closer to him.

Adrian felt her shaking.

“Can she speak?”

“She regained consciousness briefly this morning.”

“Can I see her?”

The doctor hesitated.

“Five minutes.”

Adrian entered alone at first.

And stopped inside the doorway.

Rachel looked nothing like the woman in the photograph.

She was thin.

Pale.

Bruising marked one side of her face.

A bandage wrapped around her forehead.

But she was still Rachel.

The same dark hair.

The same delicate nose.

The same hands he remembered holding while they walked through Central Park during winters when neither of them could afford taxis.

Adrian stood beside the bed.

Seven years of questions gathered inside him.

Why did you leave?

Why didn’t you tell me?

Did you ever love me?

Did you know I looked for you?

Did you know I almost destroyed myself after you disappeared?

But when Rachel opened her eyes, he couldn’t ask any of them.

She stared at him.

Then whispered:

“Oh, God.”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“Rachel.”

Tears appeared instantly.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Mia found me.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“No.”

“She came to my wedding.”

Rachel turned her face away.

“I told her not to.”

“She was carrying Ellie.”

Rachel began crying.

“She shouldn’t have had to do that.”

“No,” Adrian said. “She shouldn’t.”

Silence.

Then Adrian asked the question that had become unbearable.

“Is she mine?”

Rachel looked at him.

There was no hesitation.

“Yes.”

One word.

Seven stolen years.

Adrian gripped the edge of the bed.

His knees felt weak.

“And Ellie?”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

“Mia’s father is you. Ellie’s father was someone else.”

“Was?”

“He died.”

Adrian exhaled slowly.

“When?”

“Before Ellie was born.”

He wanted explanations.

But another question mattered more.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Mia?”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Because somebody told me what would happen if I did.”

“Vanessa?”

Rachel looked terrified.

“No.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“Rachel.”

“It started before Vanessa.”

His stomach tightened.

“What started?”

Rachel glanced toward the door.

“Is Mia safe?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Outside.”

“With who?”

“My security.”

Rachel relaxed slightly.

“Adrian, listen to me. You need to take those girls somewhere safe.”

“I will.”

“No. You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She struggled to sit up.

Pain crossed her face.

Adrian immediately reached for her.

She instinctively pulled away.

That hurt more than he expected.

“Who did this to you?”

Rachel whispered:

“I don’t know his name.”

“Was he connected to Vanessa?”

“I think so.”

Adrian took out the business card.

Rachel’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Mia.”

“She wasn’t supposed to see it.”

“Whose handwriting?”

Rachel said nothing.

Adrian already knew the answer he suspected.

He just didn’t understand why.

Seven years earlier, only a handful of people knew about his relationship with Rachel.

Daniel.

Rachel’s sister.

And Adrian’s mother.

Eleanor Cole.

The woman who had raised him alone after his father left.

The woman Adrian had spent his entire life trying to make proud.

The handwriting on the card looked exactly like hers.

Adrian’s phone rang.

Daniel.

He answered.

“What?”

“Where are you?”

“Outside Rachel’s room.”

“Stay there.”

“What happened?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Vanessa left the hotel.”

“I know.”

“She didn’t go home.”

“Where did she go?”

“We tracked the car.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Tell me.”

“Your mother’s house.”

The world seemed to shift.

Adrian stared at Rachel.

She was watching his expression.

She knew.

“You knew my mother was involved.”

Rachel began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“She came to see me the week before I disappeared.”

Adrian couldn’t move.

“What did she say?”

Rachel looked toward the window.

“You had just received your first major investment offer.”

He remembered.

It had been the beginning of everything.

“She told me I would ruin your future.”

Adrian felt cold.

“She said investors wouldn’t take you seriously if you were supporting a pregnant girlfriend.”

“You were pregnant already?”

Rachel nodded.

“I found out two days before she came.”

“Did you tell her?”

“She knew.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian began pacing.

“What happened next?”

“She offered me money.”

His expression hardened.

“You took it?”

“No.”

“Then why did you leave?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Because she showed me photographs.”

“Of what?”

“My younger sister.”

Adrian stopped.

Rachel’s sister had struggled with addiction during those years.

“She knew where Emily was living. She knew who she was buying drugs from. She told me she could have Emily arrested. She said she could make sure she lost custody of her son.”

Adrian stared at her.

“My mother threatened you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she thought I was holding you back.”

Rage moved slowly through him.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“She convinced me you knew.”

Adrian’s face went blank.

“What?”

Rachel cried harder.

“She showed me messages.”

“What messages?”

“Texts from your phone.”

Adrian knew before she finished.

“They said you didn’t want the baby.”

“No.”

“I believed them.”

“Rachel, I never sent anything like that.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

“Years later, your old number appeared in an interview. I realized the messages had come from a different number saved under your name.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Seven years.

Seven years stolen by manipulation.

“And Vanessa?”

Rachel’s breathing became uneven.

“She contacted me six months ago.”

“Why?”

“She somehow found out about Mia.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did she want?”

“She wanted me to sign something promising I would never contact you.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“She offered money.”

“How much?”

“Two million dollars.”

Adrian gave a bitter laugh.

“And when you refused?”

“She started threatening me.”

“With what?”

“My job. My apartment. Mia’s school.”

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

“She came last week?”

Rachel nodded.

“She said once you were married, she would make sure I disappeared permanently from your life.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

A nurse entered.

“Mr. Cole, she needs rest.”

Rachel grabbed Adrian’s hand.

“Wait.”

Her grip was weak but desperate.

“There’s something else.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“What?”

Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa knows about the trust.”

“What trust?”

Rachel stared at him.

“The one your father created.”

Adrian frowned.

“My father didn’t create a trust.”

“Yes, he did.”

“How would you know?”

“Because he contacted me before he died.”

Adrian’s heart stopped.

His father, Richard Cole, had died four years earlier.

They had barely spoken for most of Adrian’s adult life.

“What did he want?”

Rachel’s eyes moved toward the door.

“He knew about Mia.”

Adrian could barely process the words.

“My father knew I had a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“And didn’t tell me?”

“He said he couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because he was trying to protect her.”

“From whom?”

Rachel opened her mouth.

The monitors suddenly changed rhythm.

A nurse rushed forward.

“Sir, you need to leave.”

“Rachel?”

Doctors entered.

Adrian was pushed toward the door.

Rachel reached weakly toward him.

“There’s a safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“First National Manhattan.”

“What’s inside?”

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

The doors began closing between them.

Rachel shouted with the last strength she had:

“That your mother didn’t just make me leave!”

Adrian stared through the narrowing gap.

Rachel’s final words followed him into the hallway.

“She tried to make sure Mia was never born.”

The doors slammed shut.

And Adrian turned to find Daniel standing behind him.

His best friend’s face was pale.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

Daniel held up his phone.

“You need to see this.”

A security camera image filled the screen.

Vanessa had just entered Eleanor Cole’s mansion.

But she wasn’t alone.

Walking beside her was a man Adrian recognized instantly.

His mother’s longtime attorney.

The same man who had handled Adrian’s father’s estate.

And the same man whose name appeared on every document claiming Richard Cole had died without leaving Adrian anything.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I think your wedding was never really about Vanessa marrying you.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“What was it about?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Whatever your father left to Mia.”

May you like

And by midnight, Adrian would discover that his seven-year-old daughter was legally entitled to something worth more than his entire company.
