Chapter 4 - The Bride’s Hidden Deal

Daniel didn’t move.

For several seconds, nobody did.

Adrian stared at his closest friend.

“Tell me she’s wrong.”

Daniel’s expression was unreadable.

“Adrian—”

“Tell me.”

Emily stepped inside.

“She isn’t wrong.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You paid someone to make sure I disappeared.”

“That isn’t what happened.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Then explain the car.”

Daniel rubbed a hand over his face.

Adrian felt sick.

“Start talking.”

Daniel looked around the room.

“We need privacy.”

“You lost the right to make requests.”

“Adrian, if I explain this here, everything changes.”

“Everything already changed.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“I didn’t order your death.”

“You hired Marcus Vale.”

The name meant nothing to Adrian.

Daniel’s face changed.

Emily saw it.

“So you remember him.”

“Of course I remember him.”

“Who is Marcus Vale?” Adrian demanded.

Daniel exhaled.

“A private investigator.”

Emily laughed.

“A criminal.”

Daniel ignored her.

“Seven years ago, your father asked me to find Rachel.”

Adrian stared.

“My father hired you?”

“He didn’t trust investigators connected to your mother.”

“So he asked my best friend?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Richard believed someone inside your family was monitoring you.”

Adrian glanced at Eleanor.

She looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I found Rachel in Pennsylvania.”

“With Mia?”

“She was pregnant.”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“I was going to tell you.”

“But?”

“Your father stopped me.”

“Why?”

“Because someone had started following Rachel.”

“Who?”

“We didn’t know.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Marcus was supposed to move Rachel and Emily somewhere safe.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“He told me to drive Rachel’s car.”

Daniel nodded.

“That wasn’t my instruction.”

“What was?”

“To abandon it at a train station as a decoy.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“He changed the plan.”

“What happened?” Adrian asked.

Emily looked at him.

“I was driving across Pine River Bridge when the brakes failed.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“The car went through the barrier. I escaped before it caught fire.”

“How?”

“I broke the passenger window.”

“And the body?”

Emily looked toward Mercer.

“That’s what I want to know.”

Charles Mercer had become ghostly pale.

Adrian turned.

“Charles?”

Mercer said nothing.

Emily walked toward him.

“A dead woman was placed inside that vehicle after I escaped.”

Mercer whispered:

“I didn’t kill anyone.”

“But you knew.”

“I was told identification had been made.”

“By whom?”

Mercer’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

The bride stepped backward.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Vanessa?”

“I was nineteen!”

“So?”

“I didn’t know what my father was doing!”

The room changed.

Adrian understood.

“Your father.”

Vanessa began crying.

“My father had business with Richard.”

“What business?”

“Richard had discovered financial crimes involving Sinclair Holdings.”

Adrian stared.

“What does that have to do with Rachel?”

“Everything.”

Vanessa sat down.

“My father believed Richard was collecting evidence. Richard planned to put most of his assets into the trust before exposing him.”

“The trust for Mia.”

“Yes.”

“Why her?”

“Because Richard didn’t trust anyone else.”

Adrian looked toward Eleanor.

His mother closed her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father knew that if he left money directly to you, the Sinclairs could reach it through investments and partnerships. But a protected trust for an unknown minor was harder to touch.”

Adrian’s mind raced.

“My father knew Rachel was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“So he built the trust around Mia.”

“Yes.”

“And your family needed her gone.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“My father needed everyone to believe she didn’t exist.”

“Did he arrange the accident?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“You knew enough to threaten Rachel last week.”

Vanessa’s composure broke.

“I was trying to protect myself!”

“From a seven-year-old?”

“From my father!”

Silence.

Adrian looked at her.

“What did he threaten?”

Vanessa cried.

“He said if I didn’t marry you, he would destroy me.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“You expect sympathy?”

“No.”

For the first time, Vanessa sounded sincere.

“I expect you to understand that I was trapped too.”

“Trapped inside a ten-million-dollar wedding?”

“You don’t know my father.”

“Then tell me.”

Vanessa stared toward the floor.

“He knew about Mia for years. He knew the trust would activate once her identity was legally confirmed.”

“Why wait until now?”

“Because Richard’s estate had a delayed disclosure clause.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That makes sense.”

Vanessa continued.

“The full trust terms became available this year. My father learned that once Mia was formally recognized as your biological daughter, she would gain control of assets that included evidence against Sinclair Holdings.”

Adrian frowned.

“Evidence?”

“Corporate records.”

“Inside the trust?”

“Yes.”

“The money was camouflage.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Richard hid documents among the trust holdings.”

Adrian suddenly understood why Rachel had been attacked.

“Someone thought she was about to prove Mia’s identity.”

“Yes.”

“Was it your father?”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“I think so.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You visited Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her to stay away until after the wedding.”

“Why?”

“Because my father told me if she appeared before we married, he would handle her permanently.”

The words hung in the room.

Adrian’s hands curled.

“And you didn’t call police?”

“He owns police.”

“Not all of them.”

“You don’t know him!”

“Then why marry me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because once we were married, he planned to convince you to place family assets under a joint holding company.”

Adrian felt disgust.

“You were going to steal Mia’s inheritance.”

“No.”

“Your family was.”

“Yes.”

“And you were helping.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Yes.”

There it was.

The truth.

Ugly.

Simple.

Adrian turned away.

His phone rang.

Hospital.

He answered immediately.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Yes.”

“This is Dr. Patel.”

“What happened?”

“Rachel is awake.”

Adrian exhaled.

“But there’s something else.”

His stomach tightened.

“What?”

“She asked us to examine something beneath an old surgical scar.”

Adrian frowned.

“What did you find?”

“A small tracking device.”

Everyone in the library stared at him.

Adrian put the phone on speaker.

Dr. Patel continued.

“It appears to have been implanted years ago.”

Emily whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Her face showed genuine horror.

“Can it still transmit?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“When was the last signal?”

“We’re having security examine it.”

Suddenly Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Then Adrian’s.

Then Vanessa’s.

Breaking-news alert.

A major explosion had occurred at a warehouse owned by Sinclair Logistics.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“No.”

“What?” Adrian asked.

She looked up.

“That warehouse stores archived corporate files.”

Adrian understood immediately.

Evidence.

Her father was destroying evidence.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“We need to move.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I’m going to Rachel.”

“I’ll handle the warehouse.”

Adrian stared at him.

After Emily’s accusation, trust was no longer automatic.

Daniel saw it.

“You don’t trust me.”

“I don’t know who I trust.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Fair.”

Emily stepped forward.

“I’ll go with him.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Why?”

“So you can’t disappear again.”

They left together.

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

“You’re coming with me.”

“To the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Rachel deserves to hear you admit everything.”

Eleanor whispered:

“Adrian.”

He looked at his mother.

“You’re coming too.”

Two hours later, Rachel sat upright in her hospital bed.

Mia slept nearby.

Ellie lay in a crib.

Rachel stared at Vanessa and Eleanor.

Neither woman could meet her eyes.

Adrian stood beside Rachel.

“Tell her.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“You threatened my children.”

“I know.”

“You told me they could disappear.”

“I know.”

“And you’re sorry?”

Vanessa started crying.

“My father—”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. Don’t hide behind him.”

Vanessa went silent.

Rachel looked toward Eleanor.

“And you?”

Adrian’s mother looked broken.

“I thought I was protecting my son.”

Rachel’s eyes hardened.

“You protected his money.”

Eleanor flinched.

“You took seven years from him.”

“I know.”

“You took seven years from Mia.”

Eleanor began crying.

“I know.”

Rachel looked toward the sleeping girl.

“No. You don’t.”

Adrian put his hand gently over Rachel’s.

She didn’t pull away this time.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Emily.

Three words:

WE FOUND HIM.

Then another.

A photograph.

A man stood beside the burning warehouse surrounded by police.

Vanessa’s father.

Sebastian Sinclair.

But he wasn’t under arrest.

He was shaking hands with the police commissioner.

Adrian stared.

Then another message arrived.

Daniel is missing.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Emily called immediately.

“They took him.”

“Who?”

“Sinclair’s men.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Then she said something that changed the entire investigation.

“Before they grabbed him, Daniel gave me a flash drive.”

“What’s on it?”

“I opened one file.”

“And?”

Emily’s voice shook.

“It’s a video your father recorded the night before he died.”

Adrian couldn’t breathe.

“What does he say?”

Emily paused.

“He says his death won’t be an accident.”

Adrian looked toward Rachel.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

The sleeping children.

Then Emily finished:

“And he names the person he believed would kill him.”

“Sebastian Sinclair?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Emily whispered the name.

Adrian slowly turned toward his mother.

May you like

“Eleanor Cole.”
