Chapter 5 - The Dead Man Daniel Remembered

Richard Hale lived in a mansion in Westchester that was smaller than Daniel's estate but somehow more intimidating.

Old stone.

Black shutters.

Perfect hedges.

No visible security.

Daniel knew better.

Marcus wanted to bring eight men.

Daniel allowed four.

Maria and Sofia remained at the safe house.

Before leaving, Sofia ran toward him holding something in her fist.

Daniel looked down.

"What?"

She opened her palm.

A pink plastic bracelet.

"It's lucky."

Daniel stared at it.

The bracelet was designed for the wrist of a preschooler.

"I don't think this fits me."

"You keep it in your pocket."

Maria stood several feet away, watching.

Daniel looked at the little girl.

Then took the bracelet.

"Fine."

Sofia smiled.

"Come back."

Three words.

Daniel felt them more deeply than he wanted.

"I will."

The drive to Richard's house took ninety minutes.

Daniel barely spoke.

When they arrived, Richard was waiting in the library.

He looked exactly as Daniel remembered.

Sixty-two.

Gray hair.

Tailored navy suit.

Calm eyes.

He poured himself whiskey.

"You're becoming theatrical in your old age."

Daniel stopped several feet from him.

"I'm thirty-four."

Richard smiled.

"You've been old since you were ten."

Marcus remained near the door.

Richard noticed.

"You brought Marcus."

"I brought questions."

Richard's smile faded.

Daniel placed the old photograph on the desk.

Richard looked down.

For half a second, his expression betrayed him.

Then control returned.

"Where did you get this?"

Daniel felt something inside him break.

Not completely.

Enough.

"So it is you."

Richard picked up the photograph.

"Gabriel Torres."

"You remember him."

"Of course."

"How?"

Richard poured another drink.

"He asked too many questions."

Marcus shifted behind Daniel.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Did you kill him?"

Richard looked almost disappointed.

"Sit down."

"No."

"Daniel."

"Did you kill Gabriel Torres?"

Richard took a sip.

"No."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Richard continued.

"Vincent arranged it."

Daniel's hands curled.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"For four years?"

"Longer."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You knew Vincent was betraying me."

Richard laughed quietly.

"Vincent wasn't betraying you."

"What?"

"He was working for me."

The room became completely still.

Daniel stared at his uncle.

Richard set the glass down.

"You always thought Vincent was the disease. He was a symptom."

Daniel felt rage rising.

He forced it down.

"Why?"

Richard walked toward the windows.

"Your father built an empire. Then he died and left it to a grieving boy with anger problems."

"I was twenty-two."

"Exactly."

"You helped me build it."

"I helped keep it alive."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"By murdering my men?"

"By creating pressure."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you were too soft."

Daniel almost laughed.

Soft.

Nobody had called him that in his adult life.

Richard turned.

"You wanted legitimate businesses. Construction. Real estate. Clubs. You wanted to clean everything."

"What was wrong with that?"

"You were dismantling what your father built."

"So you started wars."

"I reminded you what kind of world you were living in."

Daniel finally understood.

The warehouse attacks.

The missing shipments.

The anonymous tips.

Enemies who somehow always seemed responsible.

"You manufactured threats."

"Some."

"How many people died?"

Richard did not answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"How many?"

"Enough to make people fear you."

Daniel's stomach twisted.

His reputation.

His violence.

His paranoia.

Richard had fed all of it.

"What did Gabriel discover?"

"He saw Vincent meeting one of my intermediaries. He copied surveillance footage."

"And Vincent killed him."

Richard's expression remained cold.

"Gabriel became inconvenient."

Daniel moved before Marcus could stop him.

He grabbed Richard by the lapels and slammed him against the desk.

Richard grunted.

"You murdered a husband. A father."

"I didn't pull the trigger."

"You ordered it."

"No. Vincent made that decision."

Daniel's fist tightened.

Richard looked directly into his eyes.

"There he is."

Daniel froze.

"The man I created."

Daniel released him.

Richard straightened his suit.

"You think you're different from me?"

"Yes."

"Why? Because a little girl covered you with a blanket?"

Daniel's blood turned cold.

Marcus drew his weapon.

Daniel stared at Richard.

"How do you know about that?"

Richard smiled.

That was the answer.

Someone inside Daniel's estate was reporting to him.

Daniel immediately thought through every guard, cook, driver, cleaner.

Richard said, "You never learned. You built walls and assumed the danger would remain outside."

Daniel whispered, "Who?"

Richard sat.

"I won't tell you."

"You will."

"I don't think so."

Marcus's phone vibrated.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

"Boss."

Daniel turned.

Marcus held up the phone.

A security alert.

Safe house.

Motion sensors.

Daniel's heart stopped.

He pulled out his phone and called Maria.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Richard watched.

Daniel looked at him.

"What did you do?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"Now we negotiate."

Daniel crossed the room and grabbed him again.

"If they touch Maria or Sofia—"

Richard whispered, "There it is."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

"Your weakness."

Daniel's father's words returned.

Never let anyone see what can hurt you.

Richard had found it.

Maria.

Sofia.

Daniel's voice became deadly quiet.

"If Sofia gets one scratch, there isn't a country far enough away for you."

Richard remained calm.

"I need the key Gabriel left."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"You know about it."

"Of course."

"What does it open?"

Richard hesitated.

Daniel saw it.

For the first time, genuine fear.

Richard needed that key.

Which meant whatever Gabriel had hidden was still dangerous.

Daniel released him.

"Where are they?"

"Give me the key."

Daniel smiled coldly.

"You made one mistake."

Richard frowned.

"You think I brought it with me."

Daniel pulled his phone out.

He sent Marcus a message.

Marcus looked at it.

Then left the room without a word.

Richard's confidence slipped.

"What are you doing?"

Daniel stepped backward.

"Buying time."

"For what?"

Daniel looked at the pink plastic bracelet barely visible inside his coat pocket.

Then he smiled.

"For the woman you underestimated to do exactly what I told her to do if the safe house was ever compromised."

Richard's face changed.

At that same moment, miles away, Maria heard glass break downstairs.

She picked Sofia up from the bedroom floor.

"Mommy?"

"Quiet, sweetheart."

Maria's heart pounded.

Daniel had shown her the emergency route before leaving.

Basement.

Storage room.

Hidden tunnel leading to the woods.

Maria ran.

Behind her, heavy footsteps entered the house.

She reached the basement stairs.

Sofia clung to her neck.

"Mommy, I'm scared."

"I know."

Maria reached the hidden door.

She opened it.

Then froze.

A man stood inside the tunnel.

For one horrifying second, Maria thought they were trapped.

Then the man lifted both hands.

"Mrs. Torres?"

Maria stared.

He was old.

Thin.

And wearing the uniform of one of Daniel's retired security teams.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Elias."

"Move."

"Gabriel sent me."

Maria stopped breathing.

"What?"

The man looked at Sofia.

Then back at Maria.

"Your husband knew one day they might come for the key."

Maria's hand went instinctively to the chain around her neck.

Elias nodded.

"I know what it opens."

Upstairs, a door slammed.

Maria stepped into the tunnel.

"Tell me."

Elias pulled out a worn envelope.

On the front, written in Gabriel's handwriting, were three words.

FOR DANIEL HALE.

Maria stared.

Gabriel had been dead for four years.

Yet somehow, he had left behind a final message intended for the man now risking everything to protect his daughter.

And the contents of that envelope were about to reveal why Richard Hale had spent four years desperately trying to erase Gabriel from history.
