Chapter 6 - A Betrayal Buried for Four Years

Elias led Maria and Sofia through the underground passage.

The tunnel ended almost a quarter mile from the house.

Hidden beneath dead branches was an old utility shed.

Inside stood a dusty pickup truck.

"Get in," Elias said.

Maria held Sofia closer.

"How did you know we'd be here?"

"I didn't."

"Then why are you here?"

"Daniel's people contacted me."

Maria's suspicion sharpened.

"You work for Daniel?"

"Not anymore."

Elias opened the truck.

"I worked for his father."

That did not reassure her.

Maria stepped backward.

"Gabriel trusted you?"

Elias pulled the envelope from his coat.

"Your husband saved my grandson's life."

Maria stared.

"How?"

"Warehouse accident. Three years before Gabriel died. Everyone else ran when the fire started. Gabriel went back inside."

Elias's eyes softened.

"He carried my grandson out."

Maria had never heard the story.

That was exactly like Gabriel.

Doing something heroic and never mentioning it afterward.

"What did he ask from you?"

"One favor."

Elias looked at the brass key hanging around Maria's neck.

"Protect what that key opens until you came looking."

Maria swallowed.

"What does it open?"

"A storage locker."

"Where?"

"Yonkers."

Maria stared at him.

"For four years?"

"I paid it in cash."

Footsteps echoed faintly from the distant tunnel.

Elias opened the truck door.

"We need to leave."

Maria climbed in with Sofia.

As the truck drove away, she looked toward the safe house disappearing between the trees.

Daniel had promised she would be protected.

For reasons Maria did not fully understand, she still believed him.

Back at Richard Hale's mansion, Daniel stood across from his uncle.

Neither man moved.

Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression darkened.

"What do you mean they weren't there?"

Daniel smiled.

Richard hung up.

"You moved them."

"No."

"Then where are they?"

Daniel's smile faded.

"Apparently somewhere your men couldn't find them."

Richard studied him.

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus.

SAFE. MOVING TO SECONDARY LOCATION.

Daniel felt oxygen return to his lungs.

Richard noticed.

His voice hardened.

"Gabriel was a fool."

Daniel's eyes lifted.

"Be careful."

"He could have walked away."

"So could you."

Richard poured another drink.

"This isn't about morality."

"It is now."

Richard laughed.

"You think because you've developed feelings for a maid and her daughter, twenty years disappear?"

Daniel stepped closer.

"No. But maybe the next twenty don't have to look like the last."

Richard stared.

Daniel continued.

"You taught me fear was power."

"No. Your father taught you that."

"You reinforced it."

"Because it worked."

"For you."

Richard's expression changed.

Daniel finally understood the deeper truth.

This had never simply been about preserving the Hale empire.

Richard wanted control.

Daniel's father had been the older brother.

The leader.

The man everyone feared.

Richard spent years standing behind him.

When Daniel inherited power, Richard expected to control the young successor.

But Daniel grew independent.

Legitimate businesses reduced Richard's influence.

So Richard manufactured crises.

Created violence.

Used Vincent to keep Daniel dependent on advice.

Daniel whispered, "You didn't want to protect my father's empire."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"You wanted it."

Silence.

Daniel smiled without humor.

"You spent your whole life being second."

Richard's jaw tightened.

There.

Daniel had finally found his weakness.

"You think you're clever."

"I think Gabriel was."

Daniel turned toward the door.

"We're done."

"You walk out, I'll destroy everything."

Daniel looked back.

"You already tried."

"I have politicians. Judges. Police. Financial records. If I fall, you fall."

Daniel considered that.

Then he said, "Maybe."

Richard frowned.

"But here's the difference."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I'm finally willing to lose the empire."

Richard stared.

Daniel's voice was calm.

"You built your entire plan around the belief that power was the only thing I cared about."

His hand touched the pink bracelet in his pocket.

"You were wrong."

Daniel left.

Three hours later, he reunited with Maria and Sofia at an abandoned security property outside Yonkers.

Sofia ran to him.

Daniel crouched instinctively.

She threw her arms around his neck.

"You came back."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I said I would."

Maria stood nearby.

Her relief was visible.

Daniel rose.

She looked at him.

"Your uncle?"

"Guilty."

Maria's eyes filled.

"Gabriel?"

"Vincent killed him. Richard created the operation."

Maria looked down.

For four years, she had lived with uncertainty.

Now the answer was somehow worse.

Daniel said quietly, "I'm sorry."

Maria pressed her lips together.

Sofia held Daniel's hand.

Maria noticed.

Neither adult commented.

Elias placed the old envelope on the table.

Daniel looked at him.

"I thought you were dead."

Elias smiled faintly.

"I prefer retired."

Daniel opened Gabriel's letter.

The handwriting was rushed.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, I'm probably dead.

Daniel stopped.

Maria covered her mouth.

He continued.

Richard Hale is working through Vincent Russo to create conflicts inside your organization. They're stealing money, arranging attacks, and making rival groups look responsible.

I copied proof.

I also found records showing Richard has been doing this since before your father died.

Daniel's hands tightened.

Before his father died?

He continued reading.

I think Richard helped cause the event that killed your father. I cannot prove it yet.

Daniel sat down.

His father had died in what was believed to be a stroke.

Natural causes.

Apparently not.

Gabriel's letter continued.

The key I gave Maria opens locker 317 at Hudson Central Storage in Yonkers. Inside are copies of footage, financial ledgers, recordings, and documents.

Do not trust Vincent.

Do not confront Richard until the evidence is secure.

And if anything happens to me, protect Maria and my daughter.

Daniel looked at Sofia.

She was playing quietly with the pink bracelet he had returned to her.

His throat tightened.

The final lines were harder to read.

You don't owe me anything.

But I met you twice, and both times you treated me with more respect than men above me did.

I don't think you're the monster everyone says.

Don't let Richard turn you into one.

—Gabriel Torres

Nobody spoke.

Daniel folded the letter carefully.

Maria was crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Silent tears.

Sofia noticed.

She walked to her mother and hugged her.

Daniel looked away to give Maria privacy.

Then Elias placed a second item on the table.

A small digital recorder.

"Gabriel left this too."

Daniel turned it on.

Static.

Then Gabriel's voice.

Alive.

Young.

Nervous.

"If this gets to Daniel Hale, tell Maria I love her."

Maria broke.

She sat down.

Sofia climbed onto her lap.

Gabriel continued.

"Richard believes Daniel's biggest weakness is that he still wants to be loved by people he trusts. He's been using that against him."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Tell Daniel something his father should have told him."

A pause.

"Being loved doesn't make you weak."

Daniel stopped the recording.

He could not continue.

Maria looked at him.

For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.

Two people connected by a dead man neither had been able to save.

Then Daniel asked Elias, "Where's the locker?"

"Still there."

They went that night.

Locker 317 contained enough evidence to destroy Richard Hale.

Bank records.

Security footage.

Audio recordings.

Payments to Vincent.

Photographs.

Names.

Judges.

Police officers.

Officials.

Daniel stared at the boxes.

His entire empire could collapse if the information became public.

Marcus looked at him.

"What do we do?"

Old Daniel would have destroyed it.

Protected the business.

Protected the Hale name.

Protected himself.

Daniel looked at Maria.

Then Sofia.

"Make copies."

Marcus waited.

Daniel said, "Everything goes to federal investigators."

Maria stared.

"Daniel, you'll implicate yourself."

"I know."

"You could lose everything."

Daniel looked at Sofia.

"No."

He finally understood.

"Not everything."

But Richard Hale learned what Daniel planned before the evidence could be delivered.

And by sunrise, dozens of armed men were moving toward Daniel's estate.

Richard knew he had one final chance.

If he could not control Daniel Hale anymore, he intended to destroy him.

May you like

And everyone Daniel had finally learned to care about.
