Chapter 4 - The Night Clara DisappearedMargaret spun around.

Marcus stood behind her.

She almost screamed.

"Good Lord!"

"Sorry."

"You nearly stopped my heart."

His eyes dropped to the phone.

"What's that?"

Margaret handed it to him.

"Vanessa dropped it."

Marcus read the message.

His expression changed instantly.

DID THE SHOOTER MISS?

He looked toward the doors.

"Don't touch anything else."

"I already touched that."

"We'll manage."

Marcus called Ethan.

Within minutes, the phone was sealed inside an evidence bag.

The police were finally involved.

Not local officers connected to Caldwell social circles, but a state investigator Marcus trusted personally.

Detective Elena Ramirez arrived before midnight.

She listened to Lauren's entire story without interrupting.

When Lauren finished, Ramirez asked one question.

"Why do you believe Vanessa had enough power to cover up your disappearance?"

Lauren answered quietly.

"Because I don't think Vanessa was the person in charge."

Ethan looked at her.

"What?"

"She was scared that night."

"Of you?"

"No."

Lauren shook her head.

"Of the man with her."

Ramirez opened a notebook.

"Describe him."

"Tall. Maybe forty-five then. Gray at the temples. Scar on his right hand."

"Name?"

"I never heard one."

"Accent?"

"American. East Coast, maybe."

Ethan frowned.

Something felt familiar.

Ramirez noticed.

"You recognize the description?"

"No."

But his answer came too quickly.

Lauren looked at him.

"Ethan."

He rubbed his jaw.

"My father had a business partner named Richard Vale."

Ramirez wrote the name.

"Why does that matter?"

"He was tall. Gray hair. Scar across his right hand from a boating accident."

Lauren's face went pale.

"Do you have a picture?"

Ethan pulled out his phone.

He searched.

Then turned the screen.

Lauren stopped breathing.

"That's him."

Ethan's hand tightened around the phone.

Richard Vale.

The man who had taught Ethan to sail.

The man who attended Ethan and Clara's wedding.

The man who sent flowers after Clara's funeral.

The man who stood beside Ethan's father in company photographs for twenty years.

Ramirez leaned back.

"Where is Mr. Vale now?"

"New York, supposedly."

"What does he do?"

"He used to sit on Caldwell Development's board."

"Used to?"

"I forced him out three years ago."

"Why?"

Ethan hesitated.

"He was moving company funds through outside investments."

"Meridian?"

Ethan stared.

"I never proved it."

Lauren whispered, "Vanessa was connected to Meridian."

The shape of the conspiracy began emerging.

Vale had wanted Caldwell Development.

Ethan removed him.

Vanessa approached Clara.

Then Clara disappeared.

Ethan was emotionally destroyed.

Company stock weakened.

Meridian attempted a takeover.

And Vanessa slowly moved closer to Ethan.

Ramirez closed her notebook.

"I want everyone in this house protected tonight."

Ethan looked toward Lauren.

"No one gets near her or Noah."

Ramirez nodded.

"And Ms. Whitmore?"

"She left."

"Find her."

Marcus was already dialing.

But Vanessa was gone.

Her car was discovered forty minutes later at a private airfield.

Empty.

No record of a flight.

No cameras functioning near the hangar.

She had vanished.

At 2:00 a.m., Noah remained asleep.

Lauren sat in the kitchen because she could no longer tolerate the beautiful rooms upstairs.

The kitchen felt safer.

Ordinary.

A mug of tea sat untouched before her.

Ethan entered.

Without the tuxedo jacket, he looked less like the billionaire everyone feared and more like the man she had loved.

He sat across from her.

"Do you remember our first apartment?"

Lauren blinked.

"Why are you asking that?"

"Because I need to know something."

"What?"

"That you're really you."

The words hurt.

But she understood.

"What do you want to know?"

"What did we fight about the night before our wedding?"

Lauren smiled faintly.

"The cake."

Ethan almost smiled.

"Specifically?"

"You wanted chocolate."

"You wanted lemon."

"You said chocolate was depressing at weddings."

"It is."

"You threw a sample at me."

"You deserved it."

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Then it disappeared.

"What did I say when Noah was born?"

Lauren's eyes filled.

"You said he looked angry."

"He did."

"You asked the nurse if newborns could sue their parents because he looked like he was already considering it."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Only Clara would remember.

"What did you say to me?"

Lauren whispered, "I said I would marry you all over again."

His breathing changed.

"And I said?"

"Don't threaten me."

For one second they smiled at each other.

Then two years returned.

Ethan reached across the table.

He stopped before touching her hand.

"May I?"

Lauren nodded.

His fingers closed gently around hers.

She nearly broke.

"I dreamed about this."

"So did I."

"I hate that you were alive and suffering while I was learning how to live without you."

"I hate it too."

"Did you ever stop loving me?"

Lauren looked directly at him.

"No."

He closed his eyes.

"That makes it worse."

"Why?"

"Because I almost married her."

Lauren slowly pulled her hand away.

"Ethan, you thought I was dead."

"I should have known."

"How?"

"I don't know."

"You were allowed to survive."

"And you?"

She stared at the tea.

"I existed."

The distinction silenced him.

After a moment, Ethan said, "When this is over, you don't have to disappear again."

Lauren looked up.

"We don't know what we are anymore."

"I know."

"We're strangers in some ways."

"I know."

"You almost had another wife."

"I know."

She laughed softly through tears.

"Stop saying you know."

"I don't know what else to say."

"Say you're angry."

"I am."

"Say you're hurt."

"I am."

"Say you don't trust me."

His face softened.

"I trust that you're Clara."

"That's not the same."

"No."

He leaned back.

"But tonight is not the night we solve us."

"What do we solve?"

"We keep Noah safe. We expose Vanessa. We find Vale."

Lauren nodded.

"Together?"

Ethan extended his hand.

"Together."

She took it.

For the first time in two years, she felt less alone.

Then the kitchen lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Ethan stood instantly.

"Clara."

"I'm here."

Emergency lights should have activated.

They didn't.

A second later, alarms screamed upstairs.

Noah.

Lauren ran.

Ethan caught her arm.

"Wait!"

"He's upstairs!"

They sprinted anyway.

Security guards emerged from hallways.

Marcus shouted into his radio.

"Power failure! Children's wing!"

Lauren reached Noah's bedroom.

The door stood open.

The bed was empty.

"No."

She stumbled inside.

"Noah?"

Nothing.

"Noah!"

Ethan's face turned white.

Then Lauren saw the window.

Open.

Curtains moving in the night wind.

A toy lay on the carpet.

Noah's stuffed bear.

Lauren dropped to her knees.

Ethan ran to the window.

Below, tire tracks cut through the wet grass.

Marcus entered.

"East gate camera caught a vehicle."

"What vehicle?" Ethan demanded.

"Black SUV."

Lauren couldn't breathe.

Just like the bridge.

A phone began ringing.

Not Ethan's.

Not Marcus's.

The prepaid phone in Lauren's pocket.

She pulled it out.

Unknown number.

Ethan nodded.

"Answer."

Lauren's hand shook as she pressed the screen.

A man's voice spoke.

"Hello, Clara."

She froze.

She knew that voice.

Two years had passed.

But nightmares remembered perfectly.

Richard Vale.

"Where is my son?"

A low laugh.

"Still demanding answers. That's what got you into trouble the first time."

"If you hurt him—"

"Oh, I don't want Noah."

Lauren looked at Ethan.

Vale continued.

"I want Ethan."

The call ended.

Then a message appeared.

An address.

May you like

And four words.

COME ALONE OR HE DIES.
