Chapter 5 - The Secret Hidden in Noah’s RoomEthan read the message twice.

Then he said, "I'm going."

Lauren grabbed his arm.

"No."

"He has Noah."

"He wants you."

"Exactly."

"That's why you can't go alone."

"Clara, this is not a discussion."

She stepped in front of him.

"It became a discussion the moment someone kidnapped our son."

Their eyes locked.

Two years of separation disappeared beneath something older.

Two stubborn people who had once argued over wedding cake and mortgage contracts were back.

Marcus intervened.

"Neither of you is going alone."

Ethan looked at him.

"Vale said—"

"I don't care what Vale said."

Marcus spread a map across Noah's desk.

"The address is an abandoned Caldwell warehouse near the river."

Ethan recognized it.

"Vale used to manage that property."

"Exactly."

Ramirez arrived minutes later.

Her team began preparing.

Lauren remained beside Noah's empty bed.

Something felt wrong.

Not only the kidnapping.

Something else.

Noah's favorite bear lay on the floor.

She picked it up.

It felt heavier than she expected.

"Noah sleeps with this?"

Ethan glanced over.

"Every night."

Lauren squeezed the bear.

Something hard was inside.

She found a seam along the back.

"Was this repaired?"

"I don't know."

Lauren tore the stitching.

A tiny plastic device fell into her palm.

Marcus stared.

"Tracker."

Ramirez took it.

"Not just a tracker."

She examined it.

"Audio transmitter."

Ethan's expression darkened.

"Someone has been listening to my son."

Lauren stared at the bear.

"How long?"

Marcus checked the device.

"Could be months."

Ethan sat slowly.

Vanessa had given Noah the bear for his second birthday.

He remembered because Noah hated it initially.

Vanessa spent weeks encouraging him to sleep with it.

"Vanessa."

Lauren understood.

"She gave it to him."

Ethan nodded.

Ramirez's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"We found her."

"Vanessa?" Ethan asked.

"Maybe."

A traffic camera had captured Vanessa riding inside a dark sedan thirty minutes earlier.

The driver?

Richard Vale.

So Vanessa had not fled from him.

She had gone to him.

Ramirez looked at Ethan.

"They're together."

Lauren shook her head.

"Not necessarily willingly."

Ethan stared.

"You're defending her?"

"No."

Lauren remembered Vanessa's face from the bridge.

The fear.

"She did terrible things. But Vale frightened her."

"She threatened Noah."

"Yes."

"She helped destroy our lives."

"Yes."

"But?"

Lauren looked toward the open window.

"But people who are trapped sometimes become monsters to survive the monster controlling them."

Ethan's face hardened.

"She had two years to tell me."

"I had two years too."

That silenced him.

Thirty minutes later, Ethan drove toward the warehouse wearing a concealed transmitter.

Police vehicles followed at a distance with headlights off.

Vale demanded he come alone.

Technically, he would.

But Lauren was not staying behind.

She sat inside Ramirez's command vehicle two blocks away.

"Audio clear?" Marcus asked.

A speaker crackled.

Ethan's breathing filled the van.

"Clear."

Lauren held Noah's bear against her chest.

Rain began falling.

Just like the night she disappeared.

At the warehouse, Ethan stepped from his car.

The massive building loomed beside the river.

One light burned inside.

He entered.

"Noah?"

His voice echoed.

Nothing.

Then applause.

Slow.

Mocking.

Richard Vale stepped from behind a stack of crates.

Older now.

More gray.

But unmistakable.

"Ethan."

"Where's my son?"

Vale smiled.

"You always were impatient."

"Where is Noah?"

"Safe."

"If you touched him—"

"You Caldwell men always think threats are power."

Vale walked closer.

"I taught your father that lesson too late."

Ethan stared.

"What do you want?"

"The same thing I've wanted for years."

"Caldwell Development."

"Not the company."

Vale smiled.

"Control."

Ethan laughed once.

"You're insane."

"No. Your father was sentimental. You inherited that weakness."

"Where is Noah?"

"Sign something."

Vale gestured toward a table.

Documents waited.

Ethan approached.

Transfer agreements.

Voting rights.

Board authority.

If signed, Vale would effectively control Caldwell Development.

"You kidnapped a three-year-old for stock votes."

"I built half that company while your father took credit."

"Then you should have sued."

"Courts are for people without imagination."

Ethan picked up the pen.

"Show me Noah."

Vale nodded toward a door.

Vanessa stepped out.

She held Noah.

The boy was awake.

Terrified.

"Daddy!"

Ethan took one step.

Vale raised a gun.

"Don't."

Ethan stopped.

Lauren heard Noah's voice through the transmitter.

Her entire body shook.

Vanessa looked terrible.

Her elegant dress was gone.

She wore jeans and a coat.

A bruise darkened her cheek.

Lauren leaned toward the monitor.

She had been right.

Vanessa was not fully in control.

"Noah," Ethan said calmly. "You're okay."

"I want Mommy."

Vale smiled.

"Children are wonderfully inconvenient."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Give him to me."

"Sign."

Ethan lowered the pen.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then at Vale.

Something passed across her face.

Decision.

"Ethan," she whispered.

Vale turned.

"What?"

Vanessa moved.

Fast.

She shoved Noah toward a stack of padded shipping blankets and struck Vale's gun arm.

The shot exploded into the ceiling.

"Run!" Vanessa screamed.

Noah ran toward Ethan.

Vale hit Vanessa across the face.

She fell.

Ethan grabbed Noah and rolled behind a crate.

Police rushed the building.

"State police!"

Vale fired twice.

Officers returned fire.

Lauren couldn't remain inside the van.

She jumped out.

Ramirez shouted after her.

"Clara!"

Lauren ran toward the warehouse.

Inside, Noah screamed.

"Mommy!"

Lauren entered as Ethan emerged from behind the crates carrying him.

Noah saw her.

"Mommy!"

Lauren grabbed him.

Her body nearly collapsed from relief.

She kissed his hair repeatedly.

"I'm here. I'm here."

Ethan wrapped an arm around both of them.

For three seconds, the world contained only the three of them.

Then Vanessa cried out.

Lauren looked.

Vanessa lay beside the table.

Blood spread across her sleeve.

Not life-threatening, but she had been hit.

Vale was gone.

A rear door swung open.

"He escaped!" an officer shouted.

Vanessa looked toward Lauren.

Her face crumpled.

"I'm sorry."

Lauren held Noah tighter.

"You saved him."

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't know he'd take the child."

Ethan stared at her.

"You helped him take Clara."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

The confession landed harder than anyone expected.

Ethan looked sick.

Vanessa continued.

"I thought she would disappear. He told me she'd be paid to leave."

Lauren's eyes narrowed.

"You were on the bridge."

"I know."

"You watched them take me."

"I know."

"You threatened my son."

Vanessa sobbed.

"I know."

Lauren stepped closer.

"Why?"

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

"Because Vale promised me everything."

"What?"

"A future. Money. Ethan."

Ethan's face showed disgust.

Vanessa laughed bitterly through tears.

"I was stupid enough to believe being chosen by a powerful man would make me powerful."

"Vale?"

"My father owed him millions."

The truth spilled out.

Vale had controlled Vanessa's family through debt.

He used her access to the Caldwell social circle.

At first, she passed information.

Then she was ordered to separate Ethan and Clara.

When Clara investigated, Vale decided she had become dangerous.

"I didn't know he was going to try to kill you," Vanessa whispered.

"But you helped afterward."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I was terrified."

Lauren stared at her.

Vanessa lowered her head.

"There's something else you need to know."

Ethan stepped closer.

"What?"

"Vale didn't choose tonight randomly."

"Why tonight?"

"Because tomorrow morning the final Meridian transaction clears."

Ethan's expression changed.

"What transaction?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Vale already owns enough Caldwell debt to destroy the company."

"That's impossible."

"He used someone inside your company."

"Who?"

Vanessa whispered a name.

Ethan froze.

"No."

Lauren looked at him.

"Who?"

May you like

Ethan's voice barely worked.

"My mother."
