Chapter 5 - The Name Buried in a Sealed Report

Maya wanted to go immediately.

Vance refused to let her go alone.

Investigators traced the message while Maya studied her mother's photograph.

Something bothered her.

Laura didn't look at the camera.

She looked downward.

At her hands.

Her fingers formed a strange position.

Maya recognized it.

A childhood game.

Her mother had taught her simple hand signals when Maya was young.

Three fingers.

Left thumb tucked.

Maya whispered, “She's telling me not to come.”

Vance nodded.

“Then we don't give them what they expect.”

Investigators traced the transmission to an industrial property outside town.

Authorities surrounded the location quietly.

Vance wasn't part of the tactical entry team.

Neither was Maya.

That frustrated her.

But this wasn't training.

It was real.

She waited inside a command vehicle.

Minutes felt like hours.

Then the radio erupted.

Movement.

Entry.

Rooms cleared.

One suspect detained.

Then:

“Civilian located.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Her mother was alive.

When Laura emerged, wrapped in a blanket, she saw Maya and stopped.

Neither moved.

Then Maya crossed the distance.

Laura hugged her.

For several seconds, Maya became eight years old again.

Then she pulled away.

“You lied to me.”

Laura's face collapsed.

“I know.”

“You let me believe Dad died in an accident.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“Tell me everything.”

Laura looked toward Vance.

“You're Daniel.”

Vance nodded.

Laura's eyes filled.

“Ethan trusted you.”

“Not enough, apparently.”

“He trusted you more than anyone.”

Then Laura revealed the missing part.

Ethan had discovered Mercer's involvement in the network.

When the safe house was attacked, Laura had been warned by a federal investigator sympathetic to Ethan.

Maya survived.

To protect her, Laura agreed to falsify records indicating the child had died.

They changed locations repeatedly.

Maya's memories faded with trauma and time.

“Why didn't you tell me when I became an adult?”

Maya asked.

Laura looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.”

“That wasn't your decision to make.”

“No.”

Laura didn't argue.

“I know that now.”

Vance asked the question that mattered.

“Is Mercer still alive?”

Laura nodded.

“He's been looking for Ethan's evidence for eleven years.”

“Why now?”

Laura looked at Maya's arm.

“Because somebody posted a photograph.”

Maya froze.

“What photograph?”

“A recruit uploaded an image from training. It was deleted quickly, but not quickly enough.”

Maya remembered the spectators around the pit.

Somebody had taken a picture after Miller tore her sleeve.

The distinctive scars had been visible.

Mercer had recognized them.

Vance's jaw tightened.

“Where is Mercer?”

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then Maya noticed something through the vehicle window.

A man stood beyond the police perimeter.

Older.

Gray hair.

Watching them.

Laura saw him too.

Her face turned white.

“Maya.”

The man turned away.

“That's him.”

May you like

Vance spun toward the window.

But Richard Mercer was already disappearing into the crowd.
