Chapter 8 - The Soldier She Chose to Become

Conversation stopped when Maya entered the training area.

Her heart hammered.

She could have lowered her sleeve.

She didn't.

The scars were visible.

Jenkins walked over first.

“Morning, Brooks.”

“Morning.”

He didn't stare.

That helped.

Other recruits followed.

Nobody asked questions.

Then Miller appeared.

His disciplinary case had been handled separately from the larger investigation. His actions in the pit had violated training standards regardless of what they accidentally revealed.

He stopped several feet from Maya.

“Brooks.”

She looked at him.

Miller struggled for words.

“I'm sorry.”

Maya waited.

“I shouldn't have touched your uniform after you told me to stop. Doesn't matter what I thought you were hiding.”

Maya studied him.

“You humiliated me.”

“I know.”

“You scared me.”

His eyes dropped.

“I know.”

She could forgive him without pretending the act hadn't happened.

“I accept the apology.”

Miller looked up.

“But we're not friends,” Maya added.

A faint, embarrassed smile crossed his face.

“Fair.”

He walked away.

Vance watched from the observation platform.

Drill Sergeant Hayes blew his whistle.

“PAIR UP!”

Maya stepped into the sand.

Jenkins faced her.

He grinned.

“Please don't throw me.”

For the first time in weeks, Maya laughed.

“No promises.”

The whistle blew.

Training continued.

And something remarkable happened.

Nothing remarkable happened.

Nobody treated Maya like glass.

Nobody whispered about her scars.

She was simply Recruit Brooks.

Exactly what she had wanted from the beginning.

Weeks later, she completed her final ruck march.

The distance was brutal.

The Georgia heat hadn't become kinder.

Neither had the hills.

But Maya crossed the finish line.

Vance stood waiting.

He handed her water.

“Your father would be proud.”

Maya drank.

Then shook her head.

“I used to need to hear that.”

“And now?”

“Now I'm proud.”

Vance smiled.

“That's better.”

Maya looked toward the soldiers finishing behind her.

One recruit stumbled.

She immediately turned back.

Vance watched her run toward him.

Exactly as she had weeks earlier.

The scars hadn't changed her character.

The truth hadn't created her strength.

It had merely allowed her to stop hiding it.

One final ceremony remained.

And before sunrise on graduation morning, Vance asked Maya to meet him alone beside the flagpole.
