Chapter 3 - The Trap Inside His Own HouseDaniel placed the phone face down.

Maya heard the footsteps too.

Her body stiffened.

“Pretend you're asleep,” Daniel whispered.

“What?”

“Trust me.”

The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.

Someone tested the handle.

Locked.

Daniel didn't move.

A knock followed.

“Daniel?”

His mother's voice.

He opened the door halfway.

Evelyn stood there smiling.

“Everything all right?”

“Fine.”

Her eyes moved past him.

“Maya asleep?”

“Yeah.”

“I thought we might have a drink downstairs.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Sure.”

Maya watched him from bed.

He gave her the smallest nod before leaving.

Downstairs, Julian sat with a glass of bourbon.

Evelyn poured champagne.

“To Daniel.”

She raised her glass.

“Our hero.”

Daniel took the drink but didn't sip.

Julian noticed.

“You okay?”

“Jet lag.”

“Deployment lag.”

“Something like that.”

Daniel studied them.

For years, these were people he trusted.

His brother.

His mother.

Now every movement looked different.

Evelyn seemed almost too relaxed.

Julian's confidence felt rehearsed.

Daniel looked at the watch.

“My watch comfortable?”

Julian laughed.

“Still bothered by that?”

“Just curious.”

“I'll give it back.”

“Keep it tonight.”

Julian shrugged.

Daniel leaned against the counter.

“So tell me about Maya.”

His mother's expression sharpened.

“What about her?”

“You said she's been difficult.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Emotional.”

Julian smiled into his glass.

Daniel forced himself to continue.

“And the baby?”

Silence.

Then Julian spoke.

“You deserve honesty.”

“About?”

“Maya had visitors.”

Daniel's stomach turned.

Not because he believed him.

Because he now understood the cruelty of the plan.

“What visitors?”

Julian pretended hesitation.

“Men.”

Evelyn lowered her gaze theatrically.

Daniel almost admired their performance.

“How many?”

“I didn't count.”

“When?”

“While you were gone.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“We wanted to protect you.”

Daniel nearly laughed.

Instead, he nodded.

“Right.”

A car passed outside.

Daniel checked the clock.

Marcus should be close.

“What about the business?”

Julian stopped moving.

“What about it?”

“I noticed some transfers.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You shouldn't worry about work tonight.”

“I own the company.”

“We handled things.”

“Who gave you permission?”

His mother's smile weakened.

“You did.”

Daniel held her gaze.

“Did I?”

Julian set down his glass.

“You signed paperwork before deployment.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Maybe I forgot.”

Both visibly relaxed.

Good.

Let them believe it.

Daniel yawned.

“I should sleep.”

Evelyn kissed his cheek.

“Tomorrow everything will make more sense.”

“I hope so.”

Daniel returned upstairs.

He locked the door.

Maya sat upright.

“What happened?”

“They're lying.”

“I told you.”

“I know.”

Daniel crouched beside her.

“And I believe you.”

Those four words broke something inside Maya.

She covered her mouth and cried.

Daniel carefully held her.

This time, she didn't flinch.

A faint tapping sounded at the window.

Daniel turned.

Their bedroom overlooked the backyard.

Another tap.

He approached cautiously.

A small flashlight blinked twice.

Marcus.

Daniel opened the window.

Marcus Reed stood below with another man.

Dr. Ethan Parker.

Daniel recognized him as a military physician.

They had come through the rear property rather than the driveway.

Daniel quietly went downstairs, unlocked the back door, and let them inside.

Marcus looked at him.

“What happened?”

Daniel's voice was low.

“My wife needs a doctor.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“Let's go.”

Upstairs, Maya initially panicked when two men entered.

Daniel stayed beside her while Ethan examined the bruises.

He spoke gently.

“When did this happen?”

Maya looked at Daniel.

“You can tell him.”

“Some yesterday. Some older.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

He examined her abdomen.

“The baby moving normally?”

“Yes.”

“Any bleeding?”

“No.”

He used a portable monitor from his medical bag.

Seconds later, a rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Maya began sobbing.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Their baby.

Alive.

Strong.

Ethan smiled softly.

“That sounds good.”

Daniel released a breath he didn't know he'd been holding.

Then Ethan examined Maya's ribs.

His expression became serious.

“She needs imaging.”

“Can we move her?”

“Yes. Carefully.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“What are we dealing with?”

Daniel showed him the photographs from the old phone.

Marcus studied them.

“Forgery.”

“Looks like it.”

“Fraud.”

“Possibly more.”

Daniel gestured toward Maya.

“Definitely more.”

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

“Who else is inside?”

“My mother and brother.”

Marcus stared.

Daniel nodded.

“They did this.”

Silence.

Marcus had known Daniel's family for years.

“Are you sure?”

Maya answered.

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at her bruises.

That was enough.

“We get her out first.”

“How?”

Marcus thought.

“If they see her leave, they'll know.”

Daniel glanced toward the adjacent bathroom.

It had a separate balcony over the garage.

Twenty minutes later, Ethan quietly helped Maya through the bathroom while Marcus waited below.

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“I'll meet you soon.”

“No.”

“Maya.”

“Don't stay here.”

“I need evidence.”

“You already have evidence.”

“Not enough to know everyone involved.”

She stared at him.

“What are you planning?”

“To let them think their plan worked.”

Maya shook her head.

“Daniel—”

“I won't confront them.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

She reluctantly nodded.

Daniel watched Marcus help her down.

Then the SUV disappeared through a service road behind the property.

Daniel returned to bed.

He placed pillows beneath the blanket.

Then waited.

At 6:15 a.m., someone entered.

Julian.

Daniel kept his eyes closed.

Julian approached the bed.

“Maya?”

Daniel opened his eyes.

Julian froze.

“Looking for someone?”

Julian stepped backward.

“Where is she?”

Daniel sat up.

“Bathroom.”

Julian recovered quickly.

“Mom's making breakfast.”

He left.

Daniel waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Then he heard Julian downstairs.

“She wasn't there.”

Evelyn answered.

“You checked?”

“Yes.”

Daniel quietly activated the voice recorder on his phone.

Then walked toward the staircase.

He stopped where they couldn't see him.

Julian sounded nervous.

“What if she told him?”

“She didn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel would have killed you already.”

Julian cursed.

Evelyn continued.

“Find her.”

“What about the documents?”

“We need Daniel's signature on the final transfer today.”

Daniel's pulse accelerated.

Final transfer.

“What if he refuses?”

Evelyn's voice became colder.

“Then we use the same method that worked on his wife.”

Daniel gripped the railing.

Julian whispered something.

Evelyn replied clearly.

“The child kept Maya obedient.”

Daniel's vision blurred with rage.

Then Evelyn said one more thing.

Something Daniel had not expected.

“Once Daniel signs, the company goes to Victor.”

Julian went silent.

“So I don't keep it?”

“You were never meant to keep it.”

Daniel's anger briefly gave way to surprise.

Victor.

Who was Victor?

Julian sounded furious.

“You promised me control.”

“I promised you money.”

“You said—”

“I said what I needed to say.”

Daniel slowly backed away.

His phone had recorded everything.

Now there was a third person.

And judging from the way Evelyn spoke his name, Victor wasn't a minor accomplice.

Daniel returned to the bedroom.

His phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Maya safe. Hospital secure.

Then another message appeared.

We checked J&E Holdings.

Daniel opened it.

The shell company had moved millions through multiple accounts.

At the bottom Marcus had written:

Daniel, your family isn't stealing your company.

They're laundering money through it.

And somebody named Victor Kane controls the destination accounts.

Daniel stared at the screen.

He knew that name.

May you like

Victor Kane had been his father's business partner.

And Victor Kane was supposed to have died eight years ago.
