Chapter 4 - The Dead Man Behind the MoneyDaniel read Marcus's message three times.

Victor Kane.
The name belonged to another life.
Before Williams Logistics became successful, Daniel's father, Robert Williams, had operated a smaller transportation company with Victor.
Then everything collapsed.
Government investigators arrived.
Victor allegedly died in a boating accident.
Daniel's father rebuilt the business alone.
Two years later, Robert died of what doctors called a sudden heart attack.
Daniel had never connected those events.
Until now.
Evelyn called from downstairs.
“Breakfast!”
Daniel locked his phone.
When he entered the kitchen, Julian had recovered his composure.
Evelyn looked annoyed.
“Where's Maya?”
“Doctor.”
Both froze.
Daniel poured coffee.
“She wasn't feeling well, so a friend picked her up.”
“What friend?” Evelyn asked.
“Military doctor.”
Julian glanced at his mother.
Daniel saw it.
Fear.
“Something wrong with the baby?” Julian asked.
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Concerned?”
Julian swallowed.
“Of course.”
“The baby's fine.”
Neither looked relieved.
Daniel sat.
Evelyn placed pancakes in front of him.
“You should have told me.”
“Didn't realize I needed permission.”
Her smile tightened.
Daniel pretended to eat.
Then he casually mentioned the company.
“I want to review everything today.”
Julian shifted.
“There's no rush.”
“I've been away six months.”
Evelyn sat across from him.
“We actually have one final document.”
Daniel looked up.
“How convenient.”
“It simplifies ownership.”
“For whom?”
“For you.”
Daniel almost admired her.
“Bring it.”
Julian returned with a folder.
Daniel opened it.
The paperwork transferred remaining company assets into J&E Holdings.
“Why would I do this?”
“Tax protection,” Evelyn said.
Daniel looked at her.
“My accountant suggested this?”
“He's aware.”
Daniel nodded.
“Let me call him.”
Evelyn immediately interrupted.
“He's traveling.”
Daniel smiled.
“Of course.”
Julian pushed a pen toward him.
Daniel picked it up.
He could feel both of them watching.
He placed the tip against the signature line.
Then stopped.
“Victor Kane.”
The room changed.
Julian's face lost color.
Evelyn didn't blink.
Daniel leaned back.
“Interesting name.”
“Who?” Julian asked too quickly.
Daniel smiled.
“Dad's old partner.”
Evelyn folded her hands.
“He died.”
“That's what I remember.”
Daniel looked at Julian.
“You?”
“Yeah.”
Daniel closed the folder.
“Then why is his name connected to my company?”
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stood.
Evelyn's voice hardened.
“Sit down.”
The command sounded unlike his mother.
Daniel turned.
“Excuse me?”
“You've been gone too long to understand what's happening.”
“Then explain.”
Julian moved closer.
“Danny, just sign.”
“No.”
His brother's expression changed.
There it was.
The man Maya had seen.
Not the younger brother Daniel remembered.
Something meaner.
More desperate.
“You don't know what you're doing,” Julian said.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“No, Julian. I know exactly what I'm doing.”
Julian's hand twitched.
Daniel noticed.
Military training took over.
He repositioned slightly.
Evelyn stood.
“Enough.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Your father nearly destroyed this family because he thought morality mattered more than survival.”
Daniel stared.
“What does Dad have to do with this?”
“Everything.”
Evelyn's eyes were cold.
“Victor kept this family wealthy.”
“Victor was a criminal.”
“So was your father when it benefited him.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't believe you.”
“You don't have to.”
She walked toward the window.
“Robert eventually decided he wanted out.”
Daniel felt ice enter his veins.
“What happened?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“He made his choice.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened to Dad?”
For the first time, Evelyn seemed to realize she had said too much.
Julian looked at her.
“Mom.”
Daniel's voice lowered.
“What happened to him?”
Silence.
Then the front doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Evelyn looked at Julian.
“Expecting someone?”
“No.”
Daniel walked toward the door.
Evelyn blocked him.
“I'll answer.”
She opened it.
A delivery driver stood outside.
Daniel relaxed slightly.
Evelyn signed.
The driver left.
When she turned, her pleasant expression had returned.
“You've had a difficult homecoming.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What happened to Dad?”
“We'll discuss it later.”
“No.”
Julian moved between them.
“You should go see Maya.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“You want me out?”
“Maybe she needs you.”
That was true.
Daniel picked up his keys.
Evelyn watched carefully.
“Where is she?”
“Hospital.”
“Which one?”
Daniel opened the door.
“You've done enough.”
He drove directly to a secure military medical facility.
Maya was resting.
When Daniel entered, she smiled for the first time since his return.
A real smile.
Small.
Fragile.
But real.
He sat beside her.
“How's the baby?”
“Strong.”
Maya touched his face.
“You?”
“Trying not to lose my mind.”
Marcus entered.
“We found Victor.”
Daniel stood.
“Alive?”
Marcus nodded.
“Very.”
A photograph appeared on the tablet.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakable.
Victor Kane.
“He lives under another identity in Maryland,” Marcus said. “Multiple shell corporations. Millions moving through them.”
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Why use our company?”
Marcus answered.
“Legitimate logistics network. Trucks. Warehouses. International contracts. Perfect infrastructure.”
“For smuggling?”
“Money, stolen goods, maybe more.”
Daniel felt sick.
“And my mother?”
Marcus hesitated.
“We found transfers dating back years.”
“How many?”
“Some before your father died.”
Daniel went still.
Marcus continued.
“Your father was preparing evidence against Kane.”
Maya covered her mouth.
Daniel whispered.
“And then Dad died.”
Marcus nodded.
“Officially cardiac arrest.”
Daniel stared toward the window.
His mother had practically confessed.
Not fully.
But enough.
Marcus placed a small recorder on the table.
“We need her talking.”
Daniel understood immediately.
“No.”
Maya looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“I'm not putting you anywhere near them.”
“Not me.”
She looked at Marcus.
“Him.”
Marcus nodded.
“Daniel goes back.”
Maya's expression tightened.
Daniel sat beside her.
“I can handle them.”
“They hurt you because of me.”
“No.”
She squeezed his hand.
“They hurt me because they're monsters.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I won't let them touch you again.”
“I know.”
Marcus explained the plan.
Daniel would return home.
Pretend he was willing to sign.
Get Evelyn or Julian discussing Victor.
Law enforcement would monitor everything.
Daniel agreed.
That evening, he drove home.
The house looked peaceful.
Beautiful.
False.
When he entered, the lights were dim.
“Mom?”
No answer.
“Julian?”
He walked toward the living room.
Then stopped.
Victor Kane sat in his father's old chair.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Julian was near the fireplace.
Victor lifted a glass.
“Welcome home, Daniel.”
Daniel kept his expression neutral.
Victor smiled wider.
“You look very much like your father.”
Daniel closed the door behind him.
Victor gestured toward the empty chair opposite.
“Sit.”
Daniel did.
Victor leaned forward.
“Your father once sat exactly where you're sitting.”
May you like
A long pause.
“And unfortunately for Robert, he made the wrong decision.”
