Chapter 6 - The Secret in the NurseryBy the time Daniel reached the street, flames were climbing through the upstairs windows.

Firefighters surrounded the house.
Neighbors stood outside.
Daniel watched the home he and Maya had built disappear behind smoke.
The nursery window shattered.
Flames poured outward.
Daniel felt Maya's hand tighten around his.
She had insisted on coming once officers secured the area.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“For what?”
“The files.”
“I don't care about the files.”
“Our house—”
“It's walls.”
He touched her belly.
“This is home.”
Maya cried quietly.
Marcus approached.
“Fire investigator says accelerant.”
“Julian?”
“Likely.”
Daniel stared at the flames.
“Mom?”
“Missing.”
“Victor?”
“Also missing.”
Daniel laughed once without humor.
“All three.”
Marcus nodded.
“They know we're closing in.”
Maya looked toward the house.
Then suddenly frowned.
“The nursery.”
Daniel followed her gaze.
“What?”
“The files weren't actually in the nursery.”
Marcus turned.
Maya looked at Daniel.
“I lied.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn was always listening.”
She explained.
Months earlier, while cleaning Robert's old belongings, Maya found a handwritten journal.
It mentioned Victor.
Payments.
Warehouse numbers.
Names.
Robert had hidden copies of records before his death.
Maya discovered them.
But she suspected Evelyn was watching her.
“So I said on purpose that the documents were hidden behind the nursery wall.”
Daniel understood.
“You wanted them to hear.”
Maya nodded.
“Where are the real files?”
“At your father's cemetery.”
Daniel blinked.
“What?”
“Inside a storage container beneath the memorial bench.”
Marcus almost smiled.
“Maya Williams, remind me never to play poker against you.”
Within an hour, officers arrived at the cemetery.
Daniel stood beneath moonlight beside his father's grave.
The memorial bench had a removable metal plate underneath.
Behind it was a waterproof container.
Daniel opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
A flash drive.
And a letter.
For Daniel.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Son,
If you're reading this, then I failed to stop Victor.
Daniel swallowed.
Robert explained everything.
The smuggling.
Victor's staged death.
Evelyn's involvement.
His plan to cooperate with federal authorities.
And his fear that Evelyn had chosen Victor over him.
One sentence broke Daniel.
If anything happens to me, do not let hatred turn you into the kind of man Victor believes all men eventually become.
Daniel lowered the letter.
Maya touched his shoulder.
Marcus examined the records.
“This is enough.”
“For Victor?”
“For everyone.”
Arrest warrants were issued before dawn.
Victor was captured at a private airfield.
Evelyn was found at a hotel.
But Julian remained missing.
Daniel should have felt relieved.
He didn't.
Something bothered him.
“Why burn the house?” he asked Marcus.
“To destroy evidence.”
“But Julian knew Maya might have lied.”
Marcus frowned.
Daniel's phone rang.
Maya's doctor.
Daniel answered.
“Captain Williams?”
“Yes.”
“Is Maya with you?”
Daniel looked around.
She had been standing beside him minutes earlier.
Now she wasn't.
His heart stopped.
“Marcus.”
They searched.
Maya's purse lay beside the cemetery bench.
Her phone sat inside.
Daniel saw tire tracks near the service road.
Julian.
Daniel felt his entire body turn cold.
Marcus contacted every available unit.
Minutes later, a text arrived on Daniel's phone.
Unknown number.
Come alone.
A location followed.
An abandoned Williams Logistics warehouse.
Then a photograph.
Maya seated in a chair.
Alive.
Terrified.
Julian stood behind her.
Daniel couldn't breathe.
Marcus grabbed his arm.
“You are not going alone.”
“He'll hurt her.”
“We go tactically.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Maya's hands were around her belly.
“I need him focused on me.”
Marcus understood.
“You go in.”
Daniel looked at him.
“We surround the building.”
Thirty minutes later, Daniel entered the warehouse alone.
Julian stood beneath industrial lights.
Maya sat several feet away.
“Daniel!”
Julian held a gun.
“Stop.”
Daniel stopped.
“Let her go.”
“You ruined everything.”
“No, Julian. Mom used you.”
“Shut up.”
“Victor used you.”
“I said shut up!”
Julian's hand shook.
Daniel kept his voice calm.
“You think they were going to give you the company?”
Julian's face twisted.
“They promised.”
“Mom admitted she lied.”
Julian looked uncertain.
Maya watched him.
Daniel continued.
“She was going to leave you behind.”
“No.”
“Victor was arrested.”
Julian froze.
“You're lying.”
“Your mother too.”
Julian's gun lowered slightly.
Daniel took one step.
“It's over.”
“No.”
“It is.”
Julian looked toward Maya.
Then at Daniel.
“You always got everything.”
Daniel stopped.
“What?”
“Dad respected you.”
“Julian—”
“Mom bragged about you. Everybody did.”
Daniel stared at his brother.
“This wasn't about the company.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“It became about the company.”
“You hurt Maya because you were jealous of me?”
“I wanted one thing that was mine.”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I would have given you anything.”
Julian looked at him.
“No. You would have helped me.”
Daniel understood the distinction.
Julian wanted victory.
Not help.
Maya suddenly gasped.
Daniel looked toward her.
Her face tightened with pain.
“Maya?”
She grabbed her stomach.
“Something's wrong.”
Julian panicked.
“Stop.”
Maya cried out.
Daniel moved instinctively.
Julian raised the weapon.
“Stay back!”
Daniel stopped.
Maya's breathing became rapid.
“My baby.”
Julian looked terrified.
Daniel spoke calmly.
“Julian, she needs a hospital.”
“It's a trick.”
“It isn't.”
Maya doubled forward.
A dark stain appeared beneath her chair.
Daniel's blood turned to ice.
“She's bleeding.”
Julian stared.
The gun trembled.
Daniel slowly extended his hand.
“You don't want a child to die.”
Julian's eyes filled.
For several seconds, the warehouse became silent.
Then Julian lowered the gun.
Daniel rushed toward Maya.
Police moved immediately.
Marcus entered with officers.
Julian dropped the weapon.
Daniel barely noticed.
He lifted Maya into his arms.
“Stay with me.”
She gripped his uniform.
“Daniel…”
“I'm here.”
“Our baby…”
“I'm here.”
The ambulance doors closed.
Daniel held her hand as the siren screamed through the Virginia night.
At the hospital, doctors rushed Maya into surgery.
Daniel stood outside covered in her blood.
Minutes became an hour.
Then two.
Marcus sat nearby.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, a doctor appeared.
Daniel stood so quickly his chair fell.
“My wife?”
The doctor's expression was unreadable.
“And my baby?”
The doctor removed his surgical cap.
“We had complications.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
The doctor continued.
“Your daughter was delivered early.”
Daniel's knees nearly failed.
“Daughter?”
“She is very small.”
“Is she alive?”
The doctor smiled.
“Yes.”
Daniel covered his face.
“And Maya?”
“She's stable.”
Daniel cried.
Not quietly.
Not carefully.
For the first time since coming home, Captain Daniel Williams allowed himself to collapse.
May you like
But there was still one final battle waiting for them.
The courtroom.
