Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

The first cancellation arrived Monday.

Then another.

By Wednesday, Bennett Hospitality Supply had lost three major accounts.

Claire sat at her desk staring at the numbers.

It made no sense.

The clients had been stable for years.

Then she received an email from a fourth.

Due to concerns regarding professionalism and reliability, we have elected to pursue alternative vendors.

Claire reread it.

Professionalism?

She called.

Nobody would explain.

By Friday, payroll was in danger.

Adrian learned about it over coffee.

Claire tried to hide her worry.

He noticed anyway.

"What's wrong?"

"Business."

"What happened?"

"Clients are leaving."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Adrian's instincts sharpened.

"Which clients?"

Claire hesitated.

Then named them.

Adrian recognized two immediately.

Both had business relationships with Hale Development.

He went quiet.

"What?" Claire asked.

"Nothing yet."

That afternoon, Adrian called his security director.

"Find out whether Vanessa Hale contacted any of Bennett Hospitality's clients."

The answer arrived that evening.

She had.

Not directly.

An executive assistant had made the calls.

The message was subtle: companies hoping to participate in future Hale development projects should reconsider working with Bennett.

Adrian stared at the report.

Vanessa wasn't merely angry at him.

She was punishing Claire for being kind to a man Vanessa believed was a cook.

Adrian called Vanessa.

She answered on the second ring.

"I wondered how long it would take."

"Stop."

"Stop what?"

"Claire's clients."

A pause.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Don't."

Vanessa's voice hardened.

"She was flirting with you in your mother's house."

"She handed me a bandage."

"She knew who you were."

"No, she didn't."

"You're naive."

Adrian almost laughed.

"That's what Lauren thought too."

Vanessa went silent.

"Restore the contracts."

"I don't control independent companies."

"Then I'll speak to them."

"Are you threatening my family?"

"No. I'm telling you Claire isn't part of this."

"She made herself part of it."

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Leave her alone."

Vanessa ended the call.

The next morning Adrian went to Claire's office.

"I know why you're losing clients."

She looked up.

"What?"

"Vanessa."

Claire frowned.

"Vanessa from the mansion?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because of me."

Claire stared.

Adrian told her everything.

The disguise.

His mother.

Vanessa.

The test.

The Mercer companies.

His wealth.

When he finished, Claire sat silently.

Finally she said, "You're Adrian Mercer."

"Yes."

"The Adrian Mercer."

"I don't know how many there are."

She didn't smile.

"You lied."

"I withheld—"

"Don't lawyer the sentence."

He stopped.

"You're right."

Claire stood.

"You let me think you were a cook."

"Yes."

"You came here afterward and still didn't tell me."

"I was afraid it would change things."

"It did."

"Claire—"

"No."

She walked toward the window.

"You tested Vanessa because someone betrayed your trust. Then you turned around and decided I didn't deserve the truth either."

The words landed harder than anything Vanessa had said.

Adrian had no defense.

Claire turned.

"I understand why you did it the first time. I don't understand why you kept doing it with me."

"I liked being Adrian without the Mercer part."

"Then you should have given me the choice to know both."

Silence.

He nodded.

"You're right."

Claire looked surprised.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

"But Vanessa targeted your company because of me. I'll fix it."

"No."

"Claire."

"I don't want your money."

"This isn't charity."

"I said no."

He recognized the expression.

Pride.

But unlike Vanessa's pride, Claire's came from refusing to exploit someone.

Adrian respected it.

"Then let me give you information."

"What information?"

"The clients were pressured. If they know Hale Development can't retaliate, they'll reconsider."

"Why wouldn't Hale retaliate?"

"Because Hale Development is currently negotiating financing with Mercer Capital."

Claire stared.

"You're going to threaten them?"

"No."

"I'm going to tell them the truth."

That afternoon, Adrian called Vanessa's father, Richard Hale.

By sunset, Richard knew everything.

He was horrified.

The next morning, every Bennett client received a written clarification stating that Vanessa's assistant had acted without corporate authorization.

Three contracts returned.

A fourth followed.

Claire didn't thank Adrian for saving her.

Because he hadn't.

He had simply removed the obstacle Vanessa created.

Adrian appreciated the distinction.

Weeks passed.

He didn't pressure Claire.

He sent no flowers.

No gifts.

No expensive gestures.

Then one Saturday morning, his phone rang.

Claire.

"I need help."

Adrian sat up.

"Anything."

"My commercial oven demonstration unit is smoking."

He blinked.

"That's the emergency?"

"It cost twelve thousand dollars."

"I'm coming."

When he arrived, Claire handed him an apron.

Adrian looked at it.

She raised an eyebrow.

"I hear you have experience."

He laughed for the first time in weeks.

They spent three hours repairing the unit.

By the end, flour covered Adrian's shirt.

Claire had grease on her cheek.

Neither looked glamorous.

Both were happy.

When the machine finally started, Claire cheered.

Then she looked at him.

"I forgive you."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"Why?"

"Because you admitted you were wrong without trying to buy your way out of it."

He nodded.

"Thank you."

"But if you ever secretly test me—"

"I won't."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

Claire smiled.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Evelyn.

Her voice was tense.

"Adrian, come home."

"What happened?"

"Vanessa is here."

He straightened.

"Why?"

"She's brought her father."

"And?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"They're asking about the ring."

Adrian's expression hardened.

The ring Vanessa had never worn.

May you like

The ring that was never promised.

Yet somehow, Vanessa had decided it belonged to her.
