Chapter 6 - When the Billionaire Took Off His Apron

The envelope arrived without a return address.

Inside were photographs.

Claire meeting with a representative from one of Adrian's competitors.

Claire accepting a folder.

Claire entering the competitor's office.

A handwritten note read:

You wanted to know who she is when you're not watching.

Adrian stared at the words.

His stomach tightened.

Lauren.

Vanessa.

The old fear returned immediately.

He hated how quickly it returned.

Claire arrived that evening.

Adrian placed the photographs on the table.

She looked at them.

Then at him.

"Where did you get these?"

"Anonymous delivery."

"Vanessa."

"Probably."

Claire picked up one photograph.

"Do you want to ask me?"

Adrian looked at her.

Months earlier, he might have investigated secretly.

He might have tested her.

He might have constructed some elaborate trap.

Instead he asked the simplest question.

"What happened?"

Claire nodded.

"Good."

She opened her bag and removed a contract.

The competitor had offered to buy Bennett Hospitality Supply.

Claire had met with them because her employees needed stability.

The folder contained an acquisition proposal.

"I didn't sign it."

"Why not?"

"Because they planned to fire seven people."

Adrian read the contract.

She was telling the truth.

He felt ashamed.

Claire watched him.

"You thought I was selling information about you?"

"For about thirty seconds."

"And then?"

"I remembered what I promised."

"No secret tests."

"No secret tests."

She sat beside him.

"Fear doesn't disappear because you fall in love with someone."

Adrian looked at her.

"What did you say?"

Claire froze.

He smiled.

"You said fall in love."

"I was speaking generally."

"Claire."

"Very generally."

He laughed.

She tried not to.

Failed.

Then Adrian became serious.

"I love you."

Claire's eyes widened.

He continued before fear could stop him.

"I love you when you're kind. I love you when you're stubborn. I love you when you tell me I'm wrong. I love that you wouldn't let me save your company just because I could. And I love that when you thought I might lose hundreds of millions, you fed me soup."

Claire's eyes filled.

"That was canned soup."

"It was excellent."

"It was terrible."

"I was emotionally vulnerable."

She laughed through her tears.

Then whispered, "I love you too."

Adrian kissed her.

There was no orchestra.

No mansion.

No diamond.

Just two people in a small apartment with suspicious photographs spread across the table.

And for Adrian, it was more real than anything he had known.

The next morning, security confirmed Vanessa had arranged the photographs.

Adrian didn't call her.

He didn't need to.

Richard Hale did.

Vanessa was removed from her position in the family development company after Richard discovered she had used corporate resources to pursue her personal vendetta.

Months later, she sent Adrian a letter.

He almost threw it away.

Claire told him to read it.

Vanessa apologized.

Not elegantly.

Not perfectly.

She admitted jealousy.

Entitlement.

Humiliation.

She wrote that losing her job had forced her to confront something she had spent years refusing to see: she measured people's value by what they could offer her.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Eventually, he sent one sentence.

I hope you become the person you want people to believe you are.

Then he let it go.

A year after the breakfast plate shattered, Adrian returned to the same mansion kitchen.

He wore a black apron.

Claire walked in.

She stopped.

"No."

"What?"

"Absolutely not."

"I'm making breakfast."

"The last time you wore that apron, someone's life collapsed."

"Technically a plate collapsed."

Claire laughed.

Teresa entered.

"Is he cooking?"

"Apparently."

"Call the fire department."

Adrian pointed toward the door.

"Both of you out."

Evelyn appeared.

"What's happening?"

"Mutiny."

Claire sat at the island.

Adrian placed scrambled eggs in front of her.

She inspected them suspiciously.

"Soft?"

"Perfectly."

Claire took a bite.

Adrian waited.

She chewed slowly.

Then reached for the plate.

Adrian stepped backward.

Everyone laughed.

Claire set it down.

"They're good."

"Thank you."

"But..."

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

"But what?"

"They need salt."

Teresa laughed so hard she had to grab the counter.

Adrian shook his head.

Then reached into his apron pocket.

His fingers touched a small velvet box.

Not Vanessa's ring.

That ring had been returned long ago.

This one was different.

Chosen months later.

Chosen without his mother's involvement.

Chosen without a test.

Chosen because he finally understood that marriage wasn't a reward given to someone who passed an examination.

It was a decision to trust someone while knowing neither person could guarantee the future.

Adrian looked at Claire.

"There's one more thing."

She saw his expression.

Her smile vanished.

"Oh."

He came around the island.

Claire covered her mouth.

Evelyn froze.

Teresa whispered, "Finally."

Adrian dropped to one knee.

He opened the box.

Claire stared at the diamond.

Then at him.

"Claire Bennett, I spent a long time trying to figure out how to guarantee that nobody would ever hurt me again."

Her eyes filled.

"I finally realized that's impossible."

He took her hand.

"But I know who you are when nobody important is watching."

Claire smiled through tears.

Adrian continued.

"Because to you, everybody is important."

Teresa wiped her eyes.

Evelyn did the same.

"Will you marry me?"

Claire looked at the ring.

Then at the scrambled eggs.

Adrian frowned.

"Why are you looking at breakfast?"

"Just appreciating the symmetry."

"Claire."

She laughed.

"Yes."

Adrian slipped the ring onto her finger.

She pulled him up and kissed him.

Teresa applauded.

Evelyn cried openly.

And on the floor beneath them, sunlight stretched across the same marble where a plate had shattered one year earlier.

But their story wasn't finished.

Because before Adrian and Claire could reach their wedding day, Claire would make a decision about his fortune that stunned his lawyers, surprised Evelyn, and proved once and for all that Adrian had finally chosen a woman who wanted something money could never buy.
