Chapter 5 - The Secret Upstairs

Richard Hale looked embarrassed.

Vanessa did not.

She sat in the Mercer drawing room beside her father, perfectly dressed and perfectly composed.

Evelyn stood near the fireplace.

Adrian entered.

"What's this about?"

Vanessa stood.

"You know."

"No."

"The ring."

Adrian looked at Richard.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"I told her this was inappropriate."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because my daughter believes there was an understanding."

"There wasn't."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You bought a diamond ring for me."

"I bought a ring while considering a future with you."

"That's the same thing."

"No."

"It was intended for me."

"So was my trust."

Silence.

Vanessa flinched.

Richard looked away.

Adrian continued.

"Neither became yours."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"You humiliated me."

"I never told anyone what happened."

"You told my father."

"After you interfered with Claire's business."

"There it is."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Claire."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Leave her out of this."

"You replaced me with a delivery girl."

"I didn't replace anyone."

"She's using you."

"She refused my help when her company was nearly destroyed."

"That's an act."

"Not everyone is performing, Vanessa."

Her face hardened.

"You really believe that?"

"I have to."

Richard stood.

"Enough."

Vanessa turned.

"Dad—"

"No."

His voice carried a firmness Adrian hadn't heard before.

"I came because you told me Adrian had promised you marriage."

Vanessa went pale.

Richard looked at Adrian.

"Did you?"

"No."

"Did you propose?"

"No."

"Did she ever possess the ring?"

"No."

Richard nodded.

Then he looked at his daughter.

"We're leaving."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You always take everyone else's side."

"This isn't about sides."

"Yes, it is!"

She grabbed her handbag.

Before leaving, she turned toward Adrian.

"She'll disappoint you too."

Adrian said nothing.

Vanessa's voice softened.

"Everyone does eventually."

Then she left.

The words remained.

Because that was Adrian's deepest fear.

Not Vanessa.

Not Lauren.

Disappointment.

The possibility that everyone had a hidden version.

That kindness was merely a strategy.

That love lasted only until circumstances changed.

Evelyn approached him.

"She's wrong."

"You don't know that."

"No."

His mother smiled sadly.

"That's the point."

Adrian looked at her.

"You cannot know that someone will never hurt you. You can only decide whether their character gives you enough reason to trust them."

He thought about Claire.

That evening, Adrian opened the safe.

The velvet ring box was still there.

He took it out.

Then closed the safe.

But he didn't take the ring to Claire.

He returned it.

Not because Claire wasn't worthy of it.

Because it belonged to a future Adrian had tried to engineer before it existed.

If he ever bought another ring, it would not be for a woman his mother selected.

It would be for a woman he had learned to love honestly.

Months passed.

Adrian and Claire began dating.

Slowly.

Normally, as normally as a billionaire could manage.

Their first official dinner was at a neighborhood Italian restaurant where Claire ordered pasta and laughed when Adrian instinctively inspected the kitchen through an open service door.

"Still judging the cooks?"

"Occupational habit."

"You were a fake cook for three days."

"An excellent fake cook."

"You burned toast."

"One time."

"Twice."

They laughed.

Adrian discovered Claire hated black-tie galas but loved baseball.

Claire discovered Adrian woke at five-thirty even on Sundays.

He met her nephews.

They beat him at video games.

She met Evelyn.

Evelyn loved her but, to Adrian's relief, did not call her perfect.

Teresa did.

Only once.

Adrian threatened to fire her.

Teresa laughed for ten straight minutes.

Then came the test neither of them had planned.

A financial downturn hit the hospitality sector.

Claire's company lost nearly forty percent of its revenue.

At the same time, one of Adrian's largest companies faced a major lawsuit.

Headlines speculated that Mercer might lose hundreds of millions.

For three weeks Adrian barely slept.

One night he arrived at Claire's apartment after midnight.

She opened the door wearing sweatpants.

"You look terrible."

"Thank you."

"Have you eaten?"

"No."

She heated leftover soup.

Adrian sat at the kitchen table.

"I could lose a lot."

Claire placed the bowl in front of him.

"How much?"

"Potentially hundreds of millions."

She paused.

"Okay."

He stared.

"Okay?"

"Will you still have somewhere to live?"

"Yes."

"Food?"

"Yes."

"Health insurance?"

Adrian almost smiled.

"Yes."

"Then eat your soup."

He looked down.

Six months earlier, he had asked Lauren what she would do if he lost everything.

Lauren had become angry.

Claire didn't even know she was answering the same question.

She sat opposite him.

"If everything collapses, we'll figure out what comes next."

Adrian looked up.

"We?"

Claire realized what she had said.

A blush touched her cheeks.

"If you want there to be a we."

For the first time in years, Adrian felt the wall inside him crack.

Not because Claire promised she would never leave.

Not because she claimed money meant nothing.

Because when she thought he might lose part of his empire, her first concern was whether he had eaten dinner.

Adrian reached across the table.

Claire took his hand.

Neither knew that Vanessa Hale was about to reappear one final time.

May you like

And this time, she wasn't coming to win Adrian back.

She was coming with evidence that could destroy his trust in Claire completely.
